John Mara: Giants can still win with Eli Manning

If anything’s clear with a few months to look back, it’s that the Giants badly bungled last year’s quarterback situation, and they seem to regret it deeply.

That may be why Giants co-owner and CEO John Mara was backing Eli Manning at a town hall event last night, to let people know he thought it was a mess in 2017 too.

We can win with him,” Mara said of Manning, via Eric Barrow of the New York Daily News. “Objectively, Dave [Gettleman] and Pat [Shurmur] both said he can still play.”

When Mara said later in the event that Eli has “not missed a game due to injury,” fans responded with boos. The decision to bench Manning for a week, stop his consecutive-games streak, just to start Geno Smith should have been booed, and it cost former coach Ben McAdoo and G.M. Jerry Reese their jobs.

Manning also appeared at the event, and offered up his own assessment of the new system being put in by Shurmur.

“I’ve been throwing the ball down the field a lot more,” he said. “Every quarterback loves that.”

He also loves that he still has the chance, after the absurdity that was their 3-13 season a year ago.

  2. They already won 2 with him. Lol…this is pretty obvious. Where is the mystery here? Of course they can with him.

  3. Of course the Giants can win with Eli. He had the worst OL and was throwing to practice squad receivers most of last year. He has no excuses this year.

  4. Of course the Giants can win with Eli, just add 5-6 hall of fame level players and they are set.

If you bench your starting QB to play Geno Smith to find out what he can do, you should be fired. Its one thing to start your newly drafted QB prospect to give him some playing time and see what he can do. Its another thing to take a failed QB and start him instead of giving your QB prospect playing time … unless you want to throw games. Geno Smith has 29 TDs vs 36 Ints & 10 fumbles. Does that sound like he has potential to be a starting QB? After 4 years he’s going to magically become Alex Smith?

  5. Eli excelled in the run and shoot when certain WR’s were on the same page (Toomer and Plaxico). Manningham and Moss always looked lost. That was the ‘Manning face’ we saw when he threw the ball where they were supposed to ‘guess’ where to be. That is how the RnS works. You have choices and when someone often makes the wrong choice, the QB looks dumb or gets picked.

Boom or Bust offense. They won 2 SB’s with it. But the ball is thrown downfield more often than not.

  6. Their offense should be exponentially better but after passing on a franchise qb in favor of Barkley , they better win a title in the next few years . And with the incredibly deep NFC, that will be extremely difficult .

As an organization the Giants had to make a number of decisions that will leave them open to second guessing. The Barkley pick, the decision to sign Nate Solder to a very lucrative contract and bypassing several QBs etc will all come into question as the season progresses.

  9. The guy SHOULD be SUSPENDED! That being said ..let him play his back up would be better then him.
Eli never was great just good with talent around him. Luck wins super bowls thats been proven twice
in Eli’s career. I predict that he throws 30 ints this year and they go 7-9. Not hating just posting facts!

I’m amazed ignorant R-words and Cowboys fans still don’t understand what happened. So let me reiterate … your teams tried to cheat the cap … and got told they couldn’t do it. They weren’t fined or sanctioned. They just had to count their contractual obligations against the cap same as ALL the other teams. Nothing was stolen. They were treated exactly like everyone else.

  11. It was a ridiculous thing to do and Mara knew exactly what was happening before Eli’s benching. When the fans revolted he threw Reese and Mr. Magoo under the bus. He should shut up about a new contract for Beckham. He’s under contract for at least 3 more seasons and has zero leverage. Let Beckham prove that he’s healthy and is finally growing up and done with his penalty drawing antics. The new face of the franchise is Say Gone Barkley anyway.

It kinda steals your thunder of posting facts when you have to say “I predict”. I’d give it a year before you say anything. How about you worry who you’re team will throw the ball to.

  13. He alone has 2 Lombardi’s ,,,1 more that the iggles organization

  14. You’re forgetting the 33rd Commandment,

If thy QB sucketh, thou shalt not playeth him in games, rather sitteth him and playeth a QB of no value to stunneth thy starter’s lazy, entitled, fake swag selling posterium.

  15. I’d love to see Eli make it 3-0 vs. Brady in Superbowl Contests, but Brady and the Patriots are obviously petering out and really aren’t Big Show prospects any longer, as evident by their half-witted display vs. the Eagles. Man, that was embarrassing, the whooping the Eagles put on the Patriots last Feb.

  16. “The whooping the Eagles put on the Patriots “?? TB12 threw for over 500 yards!!
What’s embarrassing is the fact that the league allowed 2 of those touchdowns to actually be called touchdowns , when in fact they weren’t, that’s what’s embarrassing .
    Go Red Sox!!

If you’re going to be condescending at least be right. It was an UNCAPPED year. The Cowboys and Redskins did not participate in the ILLEGAL collusion of the other owners and were fined for it. Mara became indignant that they didn’t play ball with the rest of the good ol boys club.

That’s not what really happened. Eli never got benched- HE chose to sit out that game. He was told they might/were going to put Geno in to start the second half. Eli himself CHOSE not to start! If he starts and plays well, something he failed to do all year, and not just because of his O-line or Beckhams absence Geno wouldn’t have been allowed in. It’s called competition! No way a Brady,Peyton,Rivers,Rodgers,Brees etc wouldn’t have competed by starting in that game.

Also, it wasn’t going to be a Eli to Geno thing. They were trying to get Webb a chance to play without throwing him to the wolves by following Eli. It would have been a half for Geno, and then Webb would have gotten in at some point in the following game.

The Eli “benched” thing is a complete false narrative.

Mcadoo getting fired probably had to happen, but Mcadoo in previous seasons had Eli playing better than he had in years.

    PLEASE:

Brady won a couple of SB’s on Vinateri kicks and a Pete Caroll miss call and all y’all say he is the GOAT.

    Different standards for different players?

    Not much, huh?

Get your facts straight, sport. It was an UNCAPPED year. There was no written agreement in place. That isn’t “cheating the cap.” That is trying to bring talent to win games. But Mara whined so much and got his buddy Goodell and company to go along to do that. The Redskins and Cowboys did what they thought was in the best interest of their franchises and WITHIN the rules, so stop with the nonsense.

  21. While Eli’s blocking was poor last year, he still makes questionable decisions with the football and needs superior play around him to win. He is done, and frankly, he wasn’t that great to start with except for some good play in the playoffs and a miracle helmet-catch by Tyree.

Secondly, why isn’t Eli suspended? Mara doing his thing with his buddy Goodell, AGAIN? The obvious favor shown to all things NY is unsettling, to say the least.

  22. giants aren’t the only team to win with a great front 4, excellent coach, exceptional run game, and big receivers who could win jump ball ducks from an average qb. that’s a pretty good combo that a lot of teams would be glad to have a shot with. they are however, the first team to have said qb screw his own fans over with phony merchandise.
