Positive reviews continue for Case Keenum

AP

At times last year, the Vikings seemed ambivalent about quarterback Case Keenum. The Broncos definitely don’t.

After two seasons (arguably three) of subpar quarterback play and quarterback competitions that kept the winner from thriving as much as he could, the Broncos are all in with Keenum. And the players are, too.

“He’s a great leader,” receiver Emmanuel Sanders told reporters on Wednesday. “Every day — the majority of the days — he’ll come in and ask me and [Demaryius Thomas] to go and watch practices and we’ll sit in the back room and watch film and go over what he’s thinking and what we’re thinking. I’ve been a part of two Super Bowl teams, and that’s what it takes. That extra work that’s not mandatory, where guys are in there working out or working on their mental game. That right there, when it’s fourth quarter or when it’s fourth and five or third and eight. That’s the stuff that gets you over the hill.”

Tackle Garrett Bolles notices the impact of Keenum, too.

“I’m grateful we have Case here,” Bolles recently told reporters. “I think he brings a demeanor here. That season he had in Minnesota was not a fluke thing. It was 100 percent who he is. A man that has been benched and moved around multiple times and still fought his way to the top and took his team as far as he did. That’s a big picture in my eyes. When we brought him in I had to do my research and understand what kind of man he is. . . . Knowing that everything he does — he’s collected, he gets in that huddle ,and he demands. But he showed us in the offseason, before we even started OTAs. He’s bringing us along, we’re doing outings together, hockey games and all those things. He’s taking control. . . . We all get together and understand each other. Because that’s what a team is, understanding each other. If we understand each other then we get on the field, it’s easy.”

Maybe the Vikings didn’t fully understand what they had with Keenum. Or maybe they thought he could only take a team so far. Regardless, both the Broncos and the Vikings will be paying close attention to what Keenum accomplishes in Denver, and Vikings fans will be comparing what Keenum does in Denver to what Kirk Cousins does in Minnesota.

  1. I don’t think Case will elevate the talent around him but I also don’t believe he will detract from it. Denver may have a solid team but I don’t see him taking Denver further than he did the Vikings.

  2. He did a nice job but made almost identical bad throws in both playoff games. Off the back foot desperation floaters. The 1st of them got the Saints back in the game. The other was returned for a td by the Eagles and they never looked back. I think those two bad decisions put enough doubt into the minds of the coaches to keep them from bringing him back.

  3. Keenum limits the things you can do on offense. Don’t get me wrong, Case is good at his game but it’s a somewhat dangerous game. He can’t make a lot of the throws that the Vikings want their QB to make with weapons like Diggs and Thielen. Cousins can make every throw and then some. Keenum has to play mistake free football. Cousins can throw you back into the game at any point. It wasn’t that hard of a decision really.

  4. As a Vikings fan, I’m excited for Kirk Cousins and also sad to see Case go to Denver. I hope he tears it up

  5. Any Vikings fan who has something negative to saw about Keenum’s season last year is crazy. Keenum gave us the best season from a Vikings QB in a decade (Favre in 09′)

If it weren’t for a Cousins somehow becoming available in free agency, Keenum would be our fanchise QB for years to come.

I will be rooting for him to tear it up in Denver.

  6. I have always thought Case was the better fit in Minnesota, but what do I know. Good luck to both QB’s and Cousins show me I’m wrong. I hope you take us to the big game, but that is never easy no matter how great any team is…

  7. Interestingly enough, Broncos players and coaches said the exact same thing about Trevor Siemian, Brock Osweiler, Paxton Lynch, Tim Tebow and a broken down Peyton Manning.
I think a real story would be if they said things like “he’s terrible” or “we hate this guy”.
Unfortunately, I don’t think Case being “a great leader” or having a great “demeanor” is going to overcome his lack of ability. He will be a below average quarterback and the Broncos will not make the playoffs. I hope the best for him, but he is a backup quarterback in the NFL.

  8. Jeez, another Broncos QB looks great etc preseason story- going on what- 4 years now? These are as trying as the Patriots are falling apart stories.

Maybe we should be patient until the Pats decline, and the Bronco’s get more than 6 quality starts from a QB.

  9. They’ll learn soon enough about the track records of retread backups. Manning was a one in a million exception to the rule, and he ain’t coming back. Chiefs fans know how this ends.

  10. Pressure him and he will throw the same exact floating interception each time. Sometimes two possessions in a row. Ref: Redskins, Panthers, Saints, Eagles.

  11. Keenum was so good, so clutch last year I was positive the Vikings would resign him. Case’s game is getting out of trouble and making a play, something few Minnesota QBs could deliver in recent years. If you keep him in the pocket and not allow him to improvise he’s less effective. Still, Cam Newton has made a career out of that so why not Case?

Part of me knows Cousins is special, as he has the physical skill set to buy time like Keenum, PLUS he’ll dissect a defense from the pocket. Bigger arm. That said, Keenum won Minnesota a lot of games last year the team traditionally lost; delivering in tight 4th quarters, killing it on the road and giving teammates confidence. It hurts to see Case in a Denver uni, but I’m happy he has an organization behind him now. He earned it. If Case lights it up this year he’ll be a bonafide superstar. I wouln’t bet against him.

  12. Whose making these opinions on case as to why he’s limited?

    Vikings fans?

What are you guys basing this off of?

Knowing how great history you have had in Minny with an aging Favre, Culpepper and….. Tarkenton?

    Give me a break.

  13. I’m a big Case Keenum fan and I hope he has a great career in Denver. That said, we’re hearing the same things about Cousins in Minnesota as they’re saying about Keenum in Denver. They’re both great people and great leaders, but Cousins can do things physically that Case can’t, and he has a longer track record of quality play. It just came down to that.

  14. I like Case and appreciate what he did for the Vikes. He’s a great leader. Unfortunately he’s not a great QB. He plays from ahead 90% of the time and the play calling was extremely conservative because Case isn’t a great passer from the pocket. The Vikings ran the ball more times than anyone in the NFL and only managed 3.8 yards per carry. Their defense carried them and allowed the OC to be very conservative calling plays and being careful not to put Case in bad spots. If Denver is always ahead and can run the ball successfully a ton, Case may have similar success. Anytime he was behind, he struggled when defenses knew he had to pass. Too many evaluators just look at the record to decide if the QB is (or will be) successful. Case was successful because a combination of the Vikes D and extremely conservative play calling. Good luck Case, hope he proves me wrong. I like Case and also like Denver but I worry that fans will have very unrealistic expectations of him.

  15. As a Viking fan, I will assure you Kirk Cousins will take a big dump and Case will shine in Denver and then I will say “see, I told you so Rick Spielman.”

    __________

Well, we’re the ones who watched him play 17 games last year. Did you?

He is limited and always will be. No Viking fan is ripping Case, just giving an honest assessment from what we have seen. If you’re a Bronco fan you better hope your defense, receivers and running game give him as much cover as the Vikings did.

  18. I would have been good with Keenum returning to the Vikes. Front office people make big bucks to make the decisions they make. Hope this one works for us long term. I also have no problem with Keenum taking the Broncos to 13-3 this season too.

Keenum has proven he can beat teams with winning records. Cousins…..not so much.

    ————

Did he do it on other teams than the Vikings? No? Hmmmm……So we are comparing one great your where he beat winning teams, and other years on other teams he didn’t….vs. Cousin’s being on an awful team losing to better teams? hhmmm…

  20. Keenum is not an improvement over Siemien. They could have upgraded the offensive line, kept Trevor and saved money. Elway’s a moron.

  21. Case deserved to get paid and I’m glad it wasn’t the Vikings who wrote the check. I liked Case and he proved me wrong as the year progressed but I’ve been watching football for over 30 years and he doesn’t have “IT”. I sure hope Cousins does.

Sorry chillyball, not buying you’re a Viking fan, as a true Viking fan, I also hope Case shines in Denver and Cousins takes the Vikings one more step. Then I will say “great job Mr. Spielman”

  23. When the issue is QB, the Vikings history has shown they always made the wrong move, from leaving Aaron Rodgers in the Green Room when they had not one but two first rounders that year, to T Jack, Ponder, and Joe Webb.

  24. Vikings fans are pulling for Keenum to do well. But are excited about Cousins playing here.

  25. This Viking fan is rooting for Keenum to have a great year in Denver. I was disappointed at first that the Vikings didn’t re-sign him, and may still end up that way in Cousins disappoints this year.

That said, I think Keenum’s decision making in the playoffs may have led to the decision to move on by management. His interception against the Saints let them back in the game, and is the kind of throw you just don’t make in that situation. Keenum only threw seven interceptions during the regular season, but the three he threw in the playoffs really stood out.

Hopefully, he’s learned from that, and he can take Denver back to a point where they can give the Patriots some competition for the AFC title.

I’ll take anything that gets me into the playoffs at this point!!

  27. Case Keenum was a good quarterback for the Vikings in 2017, but Kirk Cousins will, in the long run, be more reliable and consistent, both over the course of the regular season and in terms of playoff potential. It’s hard not to like this move for an offense that already ranked 11th overall after having Keenum at the helm for most of last year. And I think Minnesota made a good contingency move in acquiring backup QB Trevor Siemian. Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen offer serious playmaking ability, but the receiver depth chart beyond those two is probably the weakest part of this team. Having Dalvin Cook healthy for a full season at running back will only further enhance this attack. As for the No. 1 ranked defense, adding Sheldon Richardson — who has proven Pro Bowl talent — is almost unfair. – Gil Brandt

    It’s not just Vikings fans

    )))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Tarkenton & Culpepper were drafted by the Vikings and the only reason Culpepper declined was injury. He never was an aging QB for the Vikings. You don’t know this Vikings team.
