Todd Haley: Browns may have best QB room I’ve worked with

During Todd Haley’s tenure as the offensive coordinator of the Steelers, there were reports that he didn’t see eye to eye with Ben Roethlisberger. Now Haley is offensive coordinator of the Browns, and his recent comments suggest that he’s happy to have different quarterbacks to work with.

Haley said the quarterback room he’s working with now may be the best he’s worked with — even though he was working with a future Hall of Famer in Roethlisberger, and even though Tyrod Taylor, Baker Mayfield and Drew Stanton are not on Roethlisberger’s level.

“This is probably one of the best – if not the best – quarterbacks rooms, in general, that I’ve had,” Haley said. “The group, in general, is what I’m excited about. I think that it’s an intelligent, intelligent group, with ability to throw the football and make plays with their legs, some of them. When you have that, I think that good things happen. Competition is created in the room, even though they’re working hard together to help each other and get better as a group.”

Haley and head coach Hue Jackson are in complete agreement that Taylor is the team leader.

“I thought that Tyrod has done a tremendous, tremendous job of establishing himself as the leader of this offense. His car is there every morning in his spot when I get here in the morning, and it’s there when I’m leaving,” Haley said. “That’s what you’re looking for in the leader of your offense. I think that he’s done a great job with understanding the terminology, concepts and all of the different things. Like I said, we threw a lot at him. He’s more of a show what to do, more than by talking. I’ve really been impressed and encouraged by him.”

That’s good news for Browns fans, who have wished for a long time they could find a quarterback situation like the Steelers have.

  1. He’s right though. They have three blue collar QB’s who will go about their business. Ben, on the other hand, is a drama queen diva.

  2. Todd Haley. LMAO. The man doesn’t belong in the NFL

If things don’t go his way midway in the season he will be throwing all his QBs under the bus then back up over them. This is one coach I can honestly say I have no clue how he is still employed besides working at Taco Bell

  3. the quarterback room itself might be fabulous, nice soft chairs, big hi-def screen, plus all the keg-o-lators installed for manziel.

still, the league’s worst quarterbacks work inside.

  4. When will these ridiculous comments cease? Cleveland have a 1 – 31 combined record over the past 2 seasons, maybe they have to start winning games before proclaiming their greatness. Who will be the next Brown to make a stupid proclamation?

  5. His car is there in the morning and in the afternoon? Have you tried jump starting it?

  6. Taylor is the guy and there’s no doubt. May the Bills crash & burn after what they did to him last year. Quietly the Bills did what what is never done in the NFL or any other profession – at least successful entities.

QB takes you to the playoffs for the 1st time in a generation & he gets benched in the process, then is fired. C’mon NFL historians, refresh my memory, has this been done before?

  7. The current Browns have the best QB room he has ever worked with??! Come on man, you are delusional.

  8. As a Lions fan (although we are used to the perennial hope of finally being legit) the Browns look to have done nearly everything right this season, and i could see them being really, really good. Tyrod Taylor could end up being a fantastic starter, they have a ton of weapons, and they still have a ridiculous amount of cash to sign some more FA’s.

  9. So..
That is how success is gauged in the NFL by coaches? How early you show up and how late you leave? That makes you a “leader”.?

    now Ive heard everything
Right. That would be like Josh McDaniels saying Sam Bradford and Josh Rosen is the best QB room he’s ever had to work with. I mean really. One has been an average starter at best, the other we have no idea about yet, and the other hasn’t been good in 11 years. Yet he just had a future HOFer in his room for the last 5 years. Puleeze.

  11. Nothing wrong with a guy being confident. What is he supposed to say? “These guys stink, I wish I had my old job and old QB back”. I wish him and his team luck.

  12. I just detest the phrase everyone seems to be using now. Say you like the talent, you have good QB depth etc. “The room” is nice huh? Has pretty pictures on the wall? Comfy chairs?
While we’re at it please retire the “dial up” phrase. You call a blitz you don’t dial it up. Maybe a coach has an old rotary phone on the sideline?

Yes, and even worse. 2000 Ravens. Trent Dilfer won them a Super Bowl. Was released after the season, and replaced by Elvis Grbac(however you spell it).

  14. Well it’s not like he didn’t go to a team who had a bazillion dollars in salary cap space and a million draft picks who went out and shopped for whomever they wanted and traded their QB room of guys who never had an NFL win for two guys with winning NFL records including a 2 time pro bowler who was in the playoffs the year before with the “worst” guy on your depth chart (based on wins and losses) being the 1st overall pick in the draft.

Ben Roethlisberger isn’t a QB room, he’s a QB. IF all his QB’s had Ben Roethlisberger talent then you can question his sanity but the Steelers are a one man show with a revolving door at backup as was the Cardinals team he was on. With the Chiefs team he had, every QB Cleveland has currently is probably better than Matt Cassell was as a starter let alone future hall of famers like Tyler Thigpen and Brody Croyle.

As a unit, yes this group is probably the most talented he’s coached in his NFL career. We will revisit this if Landry Jones or Mason Rudolph ever get starting jobs in the NFL.

Yeah, Taylor want tot take out the Bills in the Playoffs, and he certa9nly did that while wearing the Buffalo. Trust me, by week 5, you will be the first to be clamoring for his benching. Mark it down.

    See: Tebow, Tim

  17. Ben is great, but who were his backups? The same goes for Kurt Warner;who was behind him? These three QBs aren’t on Ben’s or Warner’s level, however collectively they are a talented Group of QBs. A legit starter, a first round talent, and a steady back up. I’d take Mayfield and Stanton anyday over Landry Jones or Matt Leinert.

    —–

You read that wrong – it’s how early the Browns drafted you, and how long you stay with the team.

  19. So, these QB’s are coachable, willing to learn, and do what they are told. Pleasant to be around. Positive attitudes. As opposed to Ben. Yeah, I get that.

  20. He’s right though. They have three blue collar QB’s who will go about their business. Ben, on the other hand, is a drama queen diva.

    …….
Ben Still has more wins in his career than the whole Browns Organizationss have in the last quarter century. Double the SB wins & the Browns been trying to just get to it since the 1960s.. The brownie fans think they can disrespect a champion that has totally dominated the state of Ohio is really funny..

  21. Todd Haley – the master of the sideways WR screen for a loss of 2 yards or more when it matters most. I think we all know that he’s just spouting nonsense here for his future attempt at HC of the Browns when Hue gets fired after another 0-for or 1-15 season.

  22. A room isn’t individual QBs – although I think Taylor is seriously underrated. It means that if there are 3-4 guys in the room that 3-4 group might be better than 3-4 guys in another room. Ben is a HoFer. But what do his backups bring?

  23. You’ll know Todd is losing it again when he lets his beard go freestyle, takes on a permanently dazed expression, and aimlessly babbles about the meaning of life during practice.

  24. Given that Big Ben has now lost in the playoffs to the likes of Tebow and Bortles, Todd Haley may be on to something here.

  25. Taylor is the guy and there’s no doubt. May the Bills crash & burn after what they did to him last year. Quietly the Bills did what what is never done in the NFL or any other profession – at least successful entities.

Lol. That’s not exactly how it happened. Taylor was the q.b yes but they got to the playoffs because of their secondary and McCoy.

Cleveland isn’t that convinced he’s more than a stop gap either. They wouldn’t have taken a qb at 1 if they did

  26. If you double zero wins, you still get zero.

The Steelers didn’t have a QB room and the Browns will easily double their win total from last year. Book it!

  27. Tyrod Taylor alone is an unremarkable player – he was nothing at Virginia Tech and has shown average at best talent in the NFL. This would mean the others on the roster are rocket scientists. ROFL.

  28. You would think that losing would have everybody on the Cleveland team dead serious … then they drafted Manziel! Getting serious and focused is long overdue. Hope they have a good year because no fans deserve a winning season more!

  29. When Haley says ‘in general’ he means ‘collectively’. It should be no surprise Matt Leinart and Bobby Brister’s sons took the Cardinals and Steelers ‘QB room’ down a notch.

  30. Tyrod “Costanza’d” his car. he just has a rookie take the pizza flyers off the windshield every day before and after practice.
