Tom Brady repeats as No. 1 player in NFL Network’s Top 100

Getty Images

The NFL Network built up the final 10 spots of its top 100 with a two-hour show that lacked any drama.

That’s because the top choice was predictable . . . and the same as last year.

Tom Brady, of course, repeated at No. 1 in the NFL Network’s Top 100 players of 2018 after winning another MVP award last season. He was the easy choice.

The only surprise in the top 10, which was revealed Monday night, was Aaron Rodgers at No. 10, the fourth quarterback on the list. It surely had to do with his missing nine games last season, but still . . . .

Carson Wentz missed six games, including the postseason, and still ranked third overall.

The Rams and Steelers were the only teams with two players ranked in the top 10. Pittsburgh placed Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell in the top five.

The final 10 players are:

1. Tom Brady, QB, New England Patriots

2. Antonio Brown, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers

3. Carson Wentz, QB, Philadelphia Eagles

4. Julio Jones, WR, Atlanta Falcons

5. Le’Veon Bell, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers

6. Todd Gurley, RB, Los Angeles Rams

7. Aaron Donald, DT, Los Angeles Rams

8. Drew Brees, QB, New Orleans Saints

9. Von Miller, LB, Denver Broncos

10. Aaron Rodgers, QB, Green Bay Packers

  1. The Green Bay Cheese Cheater QB is nothing special – take away his cheating that exploits defensive presnap penalties that give him free plays, he gets yards he consistently cannot get any other way. This guy is a total fraud – he has learned how to cheat and how to game the system – the NFL must therefore give the defense the same advantage – if an offensive player commits a presnap penalty, then the defense should be able to blitz the heck out of the offensive line to force interceptions, fumbles, or to lay the wood to the QB. The defense must have the same advantage the Cheese Cheaters have.

Or, stop the play when a defensive player commits a presnap penalty and march off the five yards and deprive the cheater at Green Bay any chance for glory.

  2. How could this possibly be? The 7-8 geniuses on here that tell us about magic systems, 2 yard noodle throws and of course, all the awesome, invisible cheating have to be right, no? Those guys are smarter than all the players, coaches, and the rest of normal functioning society for sure. Brady ate their lunch again.

Time to trudge back to the excuse laboratory in the basement guys. I’m sure you’ll come up with something else. Good luck this time.

    ——-
    Yep.

  4. “The only surprise in the top 10, which was revealed Monday night, was Aaron Rodgers at No. 10”

You don’t consider Carson Wentz debuting on the list at #3 as a surprise?

  5. Wentz seems like a prime candidate to drop. Like Prescott did last year. Probably a couple, maybe 3, get hurt and gone for a decent amount of time. Or suspended.

  6. Aaron Rodgers should have walked out of GB years ago.

In order of incompetence, GB mismanagement starts with the Board of Directors; flows down to Mark Murphy; percolated at Ted Thompson’s desk; manifested itself in Mike McCarthy; and boiled egg vet with Dom Capers.

    What a bunch of blundering idiots. . . . .

  7. I’m sorry, but if Carson Went is so great then why did his team not miss a beat after his injury? I’m not sure the players are the last word on “the players”.

  8. Carson Wentz declined in his rookie year and played only 10 games last year. He is the league’s 3rd best player? Some might say he’s only the Eagles’ second best quarterback. No wonder media members and not the players handle the HOF voting.

  9. Lol @ Rogers getting the courtesy slot at 10. Are we skipping 2018 for 2017 numbers?
In that case please put James white in top 10, also Edelman, also Nate Solder.
    Thanks

  10. Carson Wentz ahead of Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees is an absolute joke. Wentz has played well for — what? 5 minutes, maybe????? In fact, Nick Foles should be ranked higher than he is, since he was the QB who won the Super Bowl.
This is why I never take any of these rankings seriously. They mean absolutely nothing and have no basis in fact at all.

  11. Anyone with a brain builds their team around Rodgers.

Two WR and two RB ahead of Aaron Donald?

Obviously whoever selected this was picking names at random from a hat.

  12. Gurley at #6? Eh, that’s a stretch. That’s also why I don’t watch those kind of shows. The voting process is slanted. It’s not like they hand the players and open card and tell them who to pick, they give them a list then tell them where to rank them.

  13. This show produces zero drama. Who is on the edge of their seat to find out where a certain player lands in a meaningless countdown? Slow/off-season fodder only.

Soon instead of justifying someone as a good player by saying “Pro Bowl or elected to 3 Pro Bowls” they will try to say “Top 100 Player Award Receipiant or 59th best player in the NFL per his peers.” You watch.

    Otherwise … meaningless show!

  14. People often confuse most talented with the best. When you hear those arguments that Rodgers can make throws that Brady can’t, it doesn’t matter. Brady makes better decisions on the field and goes through his progressions like nobody else who has played the position.

  15. Love em or Hate em, How can anyone not RESPECT what he has done in the league. With what? Two hall of fame receiving targets over his career. Randy Moss for I believe one season & Gronk.

  16. What in the hell has Carson Wentz done, to justify being #3 on the list ? And you dont think that is a surprise?

  17. It ceases to amaze me that so many are so quick to judge a player based on one, or part of one season. I got 2 words for you, Dak Prescott. Wentz hasn’t earned his place in the top 10. Trendy and emotional choice for sure but how about we wait until he actually wins something. For all we know Foles’ experience is what got Philly past NE and Wentz may have folded.

  18. So I guess all the so called fans that call him 3 yard Tom, or a system qb, are wrong? No that can’t be it.

  19. “The only surprise in the top 10, which was revealed Monday night, was Aaron Rodgers at No. 10, the fourth quarterback on the list. It surely had to do with his missing nine games last season, but still . . . .”

The surprise wasn’t that he was 10th, it was that he made the list at all.

Everyone saw how Rodgers played against Carolina, after being medically cleared to play.

Rodgers couldn’t throw a single long route without being intercepted (3 long balls, 3 INT’s) – and even though medically cleared to play. He could have only missed 7 games last season, but after his performance against Carolina, Rodgers, the Packers coaching staff and Packer management decided to put Rodgers on IR (against NFL rules) – even though he had not sustained any injuries in the game.

  20. How is Jason Kelce, and Barrette Brooks not ranked and Jimmy Garappola and his 5 whole games on the list? How do they come up with this joke list list? anyway

  21. Don’t understand how he is the #1 player. According to patriot fans the qb with the most super bowl wins is the best qb so how can a qb who didn’t win the super bowl be the best player of 2018? Yes we all know Belichick benched his best corner, traded away the NFL sack leader in the off season so those two moves alone probably cost them the super bowl so it just wasn’t Brady’s inability to catch a pass or not fumble a football were the only reasons.

  22. To be 40 years old and be voted the Number 1 by your peers two years in a row is by any definition pretty dam impressive. One thing Ive learned over the years is that your peers are the best judge of your abilities.

  23. but but but but… Tom has a week arm and can only throw short passes….. he plays with deflated balls….. he is a system quarterback…. this poll must be a fabrication from the media, oh wait it is a poll of current NFL players and TB12 was #1 two years in a row… BAMM haters heads are gonna explode!!

  24. Just shows how ridiculous this list is when Rodgers finishes 10th while he played in all of 6 games :). Brady was a no brainer at #1, anyone could have gotten that right.

  25. Hilarious that now this list matters to some here that said lists like this have zero relevance or meaning🤣

Where was “our franchise qb” Kirk Cousins on the list again? I don’t pay a lot of attention to this list, was he in the 90’s or something?

I can tell you that Aaron has a different look in his eye this season. He is always locked in and loaded, but there is something extra this season. I don’t disagree with several analysts that have him favored for his 3rd MVP award. I also do not disagree with those that have Green Bay as the “team to beat in 2018”

I mentioned in another thread that Tony Romo of CBS sports is the latest to say the Packers improved the most and are not a team you want to face.

Stay tuned. In 75 days is the season opener vs. The Bears👏👌👍☝️🏈

Maclom Butler had an up and down season and a horrible postseason. His final passer rating against was 103 for the season, down from 78 in 2016.

Gilmore was not benched. He’s their best shutdown CB.

Butler is a good little player, but stupidly rejecting 8 mil per to play for SBs, will come back to haunt him in his career. Sure, he’s now overpaid in Tenn and soon to be exposed for Titans fans, but he’ll regret his actions.

Cleaning out one’s locker, mouthing off to coaches and being “difficult to get ready all year”, on top of a mental breakdown during the anthem, is not BB’s fault.

The media likes to lie and intentionally leave things out to push a story that doesn’t exist.

Goodell cheated. He gave Philly 2 illegal TDs, had a smirking Steratore programmed to help Philly (look at the creepy replays of the Clement TD/before he even looked at the replay he was saying it was a catch), and one ref completely worked with Alshon Jeffrey to approve of an illegal formation before the snap for the 2nd illegal TD.

You people should be happy you got what you wanted and get over it already.

PS Who is this mystery “sack leader” he traded away in the offseason? lmao

  27. What did he get in his Superbowl loss, over 500 yards, yeah he’s all washed up. I feel sorry for bitter NFL fans that have to demonize other great players because he’s not on their team Come on if your a real fan of football and not just a homer, you should be able to appreciate the likes of Brady. J. Jones, Aaron Donald, Val Miller, Carson Wentz, Todd Gurley. etc., etc. To say you love football but you spend time finding reasons other players not yours are not as good as their performance or their records prove. Maybe you should start watching tennis instead of pro football?

  28. Tom Brady – the older he gets, he just continues to get better and better. However, why aren’t there more Patriots in the top 10? Gronk is the best TE in the game.

By this logic Trent Dilfer won in a year Peyton didn’t play in the SB so he’s better than Manning? Not in that year or any other.

Getting over an obsession can be uplifting. Perhaps some are happy in their misery.

  30. This fan of the world champion Philadelphia eagles is confused why everyone disagrees with Wentz at #3. He was leading the MVP voting and lead the league’s number one scoring offense before he went down. Also, there is no QB controversy or competition. While Foles did play great in the Championship and Super Bowl, it there is no doubt that Wentz is a generational talent and is the franchise QB.

  31. The list pertains to the 2017 season, no problems here, AR-12 missed a whole bunch of games. With that being said, there’s nobody more qualified to rank players than the people who have to play against them each week.

Uh, he still is the QB with the most Super Bowl wins… And like LeBron, he was outstanding in the playoffs/finals but the rest of the team didn’t show up. That said, I would take Rodgers over Brady going forward just because of the “years left” factor.

  37. people… it is not a list or a ranking… It is the result of a poll taken of CURRENT NFL players. It means nothing, no wins or trophies, except it does have credibility because it is how peers feel about each other…. oh it should shut the haters up… but that will never happen

  38. Yes the players do vote on this list and I do think whether some players will admit it or not this list will indeed add to their motivation.

Not that AROD needs anymore motivation than already has for this season, but I am sure someone will mention this list to him and it will be added to the memory bank😉

One way you can know just how good a qb is really is by looking at how many cheater accusations there are. I was ok with Rodgers at 10 because he really is terrific but injury did cut him down. But then I read comments like this and a few others and it does make me think if he hit that many guys that hard he should be higher up the list.

  41. This is bad news for GB fans. The #10 ranking will trigger little Aaron and up his salary demands by and additional $5m per year just to calm his bruised ego

  42. Not one of you posting here today had a vote in the selection process.

It was done by players…..enough said…to the BS and the hate and take it from the players mouths……

Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans: “I wanted to beat him really bad — just the inner kid in me being a Peyton Manning fan. It is awesome to share the field with greatness.”

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr: “When I look at him, and it is the same kind of mindset I try and get myself into, just watching him, he stays calm. He just does his job. ‘Let’s lock in on the little things. Let my feet be right, let my ankles be right, let my read be right, let my eyes be right.’ When you keep watching him over the years doing those little things over and over, it’s not a crazy thing. He’s just doing the little things right when it’s hard.”

Patriots wide receiver Matthew Slater: “Time after time when we are in a pinch, he’s there to get us out of it.”

Rams wide receiver Brandin Cooks: “It would be insane if he’s not No. 1, let’s just say that.”

Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins: “He’s No. 1 because of the production, the individual statistics. He’s had a revolving door in terms of the supporting cast around him year-to-year and yet he doesn’t miss a beat. When we prepared for the Saints, we watched the Patriots against the Saints. Some of the plays he made, he threw a touchdown pass to Rob Gronkowski off schedule, just hanging in the pocket. I see that as mobility. I see that as extending the play. It may not be running around. Sometimes running around he may look like a baby giraffe, but he finds a way in the pocket to keep his eyes down field when there is chaos around him and deliver throws time and time again, especially in big moments.”

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson: “He’s super clutch. He’s on time. When the game is on the line, he has no fear. I have a lot of respect for Tom. How could you not? He’s the greatest of all-time.”

Welcome to the site, Uncle Rico

  48. “i can throw the ball with more zip on it than brady at this point.”

Oh please. I know you’re being facetious but that’s a ridiculous claim. Brady led the league in completions of 40+ yards in the air last season, and was #3 in completions of 20+ yards in the air. So no, some random PFT poster who is not an athlete cannot “throw the ball with more zip” than Brady.

    SMH

  49. “take away his cheating that exploits defensive presnap penalties that give him free plays, he gets yards he consistently cannot get any other way. This guy is a total fraud – he has learned how to cheat and how to game the system”

That’s hilarious. So Rodgers is doing something totally and utterly within the rules, that all good quarterbacks do, yet somehow you consider that “cheating”?

    Hilarious.

    —–

Clearly you don’t understand how contracts work and the timing of them. So according to you, Matt Ryan is the best QB in football and Brady is middle of the road? Vikings didn’t sell the farm. They have most of their big names locked up.

    Good measure for teams.

Not so good measuring individual performance.

  57. Yeah, I could see why people thinks Rodgers isnt that great based on his playoff record. Lets just look at his last 3 years in the playoffs.
2014 – Brutal loss to the Seahawks in the conference championship – Yeah, if only Rodgers could have played well. The defense and special teams had no part in that loss.
2015 – Playing with his numbers 4,5 and 6 receivers, completing two hail marys, Pack lose in overtime with Larry Fitzgerald running wild. Remember when Rodgers blew the coverage on Fitz – faked him right out of his shoes.
2016 – The Falcons put up 44 points and Rodgers fumbled the ball away when he was playing running back before the half on a likely scoring drive. That guy has got to learn to hold onto the ball when he’s running through the hole.

I’ll take Rodgers as my quarterback any day of the week and twice on Sundays. So would you.

  58. Michael Thomas #81 Julio Jones #3 ??? so 77 players added to the list before Thomas is listed, personally wouldn’t trade Thomas for Jones straight up.

  59. johngaltwho,

I particularly enjoyed the game where Rodgers gave up 444 yards to a QB who isn’t capable of making an NFL roster right now.

If only he could have made a couple stops……

Brady is an amazing player; however, Barry had no supporting cast on either side of the ball. Everyone knew he was getting it and he still embarrassed a lot of great defenses. OJ Simpson is also noteworthy. Take those defenses away from the Pats and the victories would be much less; similar to the Chiefs or Saints.

    =====

    Not true.

They made the Playoff 6 of Barrys 10 years. They even managed an NFCC Game. That’s not all Barry.

    Herman Moore
    Kevin Glover
    Lomas Brown
    Jerry Ball
    Henry Thomas
    Chris Speilman
    Bennie Blades.. really good players.

  72. Barry’s own words for why he walked away:

    1) He did not feel the Lions were making a concerted effort to build a competitive team (i.e., Dallas and San Fran)

    2) He did not want to play for another team to chase a ring (i.e., Dallas and San Fran)

“The guy has lost so many super bowls I’ve lost track. Why would anyone think he is the best? Give me Rodgers or Brees any day…”

    ===========================

You do understand in order to make it to the Super Bowl, you have to win some important games, right? So how is someone who made it LESS times to the Super Bowl is better? Rodgers and Brees are great players but they’re not better.
