Report: Julian Edelman’s appeal focused only on paperwork

So much for the “unrecognized substance” defense.

The P.R. red herring never actually became part of Patriots receiver Julian Edelman‘s appeal of his four-game suspension for violating the PED policy, according to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe.

Instead, Edelman’s defense focused only on paperwork. And his defense failed.

The notion that the substance for which Edelman tested positive was unrecognized created the impression that perhaps it wasn’t a PED. But that’s not how the PED policy works; the league imposes a suspension even if a substance doesn’t fit within the definition of one of the specifically-named compounds, as long it has “a similar chemical structure and similar biological effect(s)” to one of the 70-plus specific anabolic agents.

The fact that Edelman didn’t make the “unrecognized substance” defense part of his appeal confirms that it was all about P.R. and never about science.

  1. The cheating and endless lies that emanate from the new england patriots just don’t stop.

  2. I think the “yeah I cheated, but you don’t know how” defense has a few flaws in it. But of course it will work just fine with Pats fans. They’ll believe anything.

But that report came from league sources to Breer, not Edelman’s camp right?

So how is that a PR move exactly?

  4. Rodney Harrison, Rob Ninkovich and now Edelman. All older guys later into their careers and tried to use PEDs to come back from injury sooner. Can’t blame them for wanting to be out there and wanting to keep getting paid. But you do the crime, you do the time.

  5. No defense. You did it knowingly. You looser Trying to use a paperwork defense will get you off. Who’s the next bozo to try that. Lol.

  6. I give the guy the benefit of the doubt. He had to know he would be tested and likely took something that he was told was free of banned substances, but it wasn’t. Still against the rules, still punishable.

But 4 GAMES? Winston gets 3 GAMES for stopping-short XXX, after having been previously accused of rape!

The NFL has shown once again that they enforce the most ridiculous standard of justice that the free world has ever seen.

  7. You know the cheating is so bad there. The entire legacy of this franchise is forever tainted with cheating. They’ll never be considered real champions outside of New England.

    and peyton manning?

  9. Saccharin was invented in 1879. If it was illegal to put in your coffee in say, 1921 and you decided to put in Splenda (invented in 1976) to beat the system, they’d know it wasn’t sugar but wouldn’t know what it was.

    ______

Now the talk swerves to Manning LOL….Cant use the Goodell conspiracy anymore bc its obvious Edleman cheated..

    LOLL!!!

We all know you don’t like the look of egg on your face but atleast keep a QB the NEVER failed a test out of the mud

As a fan of a QB that’s going on 41 and playing BETTER than he ever has, reigning NFL MVP, 500+ yrds in SB, Showing ZERO signs of decline and has a CORRUPTED fake doctor in Guerrero as his traininer be careful what you say because itll come back around.

  11. So he knew he was busted…he was just trying to get off on a technicality. Not surprised considering who he plays for.

Winston probably only got 3 games because he made a deal that he wouldn’t appeal. Had he not done that it probably would have been six games.

  13. So his attitude iwas ‘yes the substance was in my body, but I want to get off through a paperwork technicality’. That really lacks any sense of class. Just take the 4 games and move on, rather than look for an obscure loophole.

What a bunch of crybaby butthurt haters! Get over it. The Patriots own your team

Ummmmmmmm, you missed watching the Super Bowl. The Eagles own the patriots. LOL

So basically it’s not about the severity of the crime as much as acquiescing to the perceived authority of those who provide the punishment.

Sexual assault, rape? Who cares, just make our authority look legitimate. Ginseng in your Koolaid and you don’t want to play ball? 4 games.

That group is quite the moral compass.

Roses are red, violets are blue,
I’ve never heard a patriot tell the truth,
    have you?
    ———-
Yes, Tom Brady under oath, in court during witchhuntgate. Do you recall Goodell going under oath? Yeah me neither. But I do recall Pash going under oath and admitting there was no evidence of any ball tampering. Yeah but the cell phone thingy, let’s roll that headline quick guys.

  17. Huge Julian supporter.

Although, he should have taken his suspension like a man. Just as Belichick did in 2007.

Brady had reason to fight his. There was absoutley no clear evidence of deflate gate. Which ultimately reflected in a witch hunt on Brady.

I wasn’t a fan fin julian appealing this. Even if you didn’t know what you took….it’s on you. The test results don’t lie

  18. Called it when he first announced he was fighting the suspension. Oh well, it is what it is.

There have been 22 suspensions so far his year. But you can keep living vicariously off just this one if thats what your needs are.

  20. Of course his appeal focused only on paper work. He knows he’s guilty and his only shot was hoping he’d win on a technicality.

  21. Where did all the people who said he didn’t do anything go? And all of the upvotes? Guess he did take a PED, eh?

I was half expecting some rationalization of why he was using a paperwork/technicality defense even though he did nothing wrong.

  22. Did I miss the positive test and suspension of Manning? Keep hearing about it from Pats fans…
