Adrian Clayborn was a “consistent force” during offseason workouts

Tweaked quad notwithstanding, Adrian Clayborn had an impressive spring in New England.

Via Jim McBride of the Boston Globe, the first-year Patriots pass rusher became a “consistent force off the edge” during OTAs and minicamp, “typically getting the jump on any tackles who were trying to keep him at bay.”

The non-contact (eye roll) nature of offseason practice makes it hard to translate T-shirt/shorts work into regular-season performance, but the Patriots seem to be happy with the former first-round pick who soon will turn 30.

“I was kind of low on the totem pole, so I had to wait until the big guys picked and then see [what teams] were left over,” Clayborn said regarding his free-agency experience, which culminated in a two-year, $10 million deal to join the two-time defending AFC champs.

Clayborn had a career-high 9.5 sacks last year in Atlanta, six of which came against the Cowboys. Trey Flowers led the Patriots in 2017, with 6.5 sacks.

  1. So is he switching to OLB in NE’s 3-4 or playing 2-gap as DE?

I wonder if/how their Def scheme will change in any way now that Patricia is gone.

The are usually in their sub package defense. Teams in today’s NFL rarely line up in base defense. They will probably use him like they used Chris Long a couple years ago. Most of the time he will be an edge rusher, sometimes he will kick inside as an interior rusher, and rarely he will drop back in coverage to try and confuse the QB.

Ummm considering the Pats are trying to find a LT that isn’t all that surprising.

Good news but take it with a grain of salt.

while these offseason puff pieces are just that, it is good the attitude is there and he is hungry. it is not so much the sacks as it is the buy in.

Lastly, I am pretty sure the greatest ol coach ever had trent brown tuned up and battling. Smells like BB may have fleeced Lynch in that
deal and SF is not looking to spend at Tackle for JimmyG yet.

LOL. Trey Flowers was pretty good last season until he, like all defensive players, disappeared in the Super Bowl.

At any rate, playing in shorts and t-shirts it means nothing; but it does sound like he is having fun so far with the Pats. 🙂

Frankly, all Pats fans realize he may not even make the team.

NE doesn’t necessarily play in a 3-4 vs 4-3, they use and play both depending on the week. Also, I think like most team they play the majority of snaps in a 5 DB “nickel” defense.

  7. I think he projects almost strictly as a pass rushing DE. They’ll need him too, you need to have a solid rotation of pass rushing ends. Trey Flowers is a solid DE, Wise was pretty good at times last year but is still young and developing and Derek Rivers looked promising in 2017 camp but missed all last season with an injury. It could be Flowers and Clayborn as the most used DE’s this year with Wise and Rivers being worked in to keep everyone fresh.

Like Butler, Branch quit on the team, so Branch was not taking on doubles like he was in 2016.

Philly was very lucky Branch and Hightower in particular were not available in the super bowl.

Flowers was doubled and that’s that. Wise and Adam Butler took on way too many snaps as a result but if Rivers can remotely a good subrusher, clayborn’s experience and hunger to win, will be nice adds.

The Shelton add is a big piece because he is very good
and even if they don’t re-up Malcom Brown, those two should cause issues.

I say it every year: Pray for health, no worse than 12-4 and a 1 or 2
    seed.

The fact I have said this for over 10 years now is why Goodell tries to frame and cheat our team.

Trolls and haters are about to be in for a very rude awakening.

Wow i didn’t know the Patsies signed Chaz Green too !

It must suck to know the “patsies” are better than whatever team it is you root for!

  10. I’m excited to see how the D is coached now that Patricia is gone…. hope they are more aggressive up front & send a safety blitz more often!!!
Pats will be getting a lot of injured guys back to go with their new acquisitions on BOTH SIDES of the ball, so I’m pretty excited & confident they will be MUCH IMPROVED, especially on the DEFENSIVE side of the ball
    Go Pats!!!!
I believe both Trent Brown & Wynn are being brought along slowly as BOTH are recovering from arm/shoulder injuries this off season…. believe they will be ready for camp this late July…HOPEFULLY!!
& with EDELMAN out the 1st 4 gam s it will give him some additional healing/conditioning time as well as allowing the PATS to keep an additional player they may well have lost to another team thru waivers……
If Malcolm Mitchell is NOT 100% but close, I hope they put him on PUP LIST till week 8….. with all the WR’s they have in house no need to risk him getting hurt early in the season when 8 more weeks of conditioning is available to him without hurting the team!!!
    Go Pats!!!

Dude stop with the victim mentality. You are an embarrassment to Pats fans. You are as bad as Hillary running around blaming everyone else for why she lost.

I remember when eye rolls were full contact. We had real disparagement back then. Folks today are too fluffy protecting their sight.
