Vance Joseph: I have to fix “hard times” quicker

There was some chatter around the league at the end of the 2017 season that the Broncos were considering firing head coach Vance Joseph after his first year on the job, but General Manager John Elway opted to bring Joseph back in hopes of better results in 2018.

One of the reasons Elway cited for bringing Joseph back is that he’ll have learned from what went wrong during a season that saw the Broncos start 3-1 before losing eight straight games. Joseph appears to agree, calling 2017 a “teaching moment for me” and explaining that the biggest lesson was that he has to act faster to stop bad results from piling up.

“You’re going to have adversity in this league,” Joseph said, via Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic. “Every team last year had adversity — even Philly, who won a championship. They lost their tackle, they lost their quarterback, so it’s my job and the coaches’ jobs to fix it quicker. That [is something] we have to do in this league. It’s going to be hard times. It’s not going to be all roses next year. Absolutely, it’s going to be hard times. It’s my job to fix it quicker.”

The Broncos will also be working to keep the hard times from developing in the first place with Joseph pointing to plans to “incorporate a situational period in practice so we can be a smart football team” as part of the plan. Stability at quarterback with Case Keenum and other roster changes are also seen as avenues to the improvement that may be necessary for Joseph to see a third season with the team.

  1. “The quickest fix would be to get rid of Vance Joseph”

And replace him with who? In case you hadn’t noticed, for quite a few years now there has been a lack of competent NFL head coaches and HC candidates. You could easily end up with someone worse.

  2. So the fact he constructed of the all time great defenses and one of the most productive offenses makes him a bad GM?

  3. Time to cut bait. Not much difference between him and HueJackson and both of them are still employed. SMH.

  4. Seemed to be in over his head last season. Doesn’t help the QB situation sucked but the AFC West will be a harder division this season, so the mistakes of his first coaching season can’t be repeated. At best 8-8, at worst 6-10.

5-11 and 4th place in the division? I guess you could do worse, you could go 4-12 and get last. The first time I watched the Broncos under Joseph, I said “who is this clueless looking guy they keep showing on the sidelines?” You don’t keep a bad coach around because “you could do worse.” That sounds like someone content with losing.

Geez it seems like it would be pretty hard to find much worse.

  7. VJ is in over his head. He had no business being hired as a head coach in the first place. His coaching inspires ZERO confidence.

  8. They should have practiced more patience with Josh McDaniels. While Vance was helping the best defense in the NFL become mediocre, McDaniels was “HAVING THE TIME OF HIS LIFE!”

  9. Raiders haven’t sniffed a playoff win, dI vision title or SB in nearly 20 years. But they had about 20 head coaches in that time. Committment to Crap!

  10. Although he should improve his coaching style this year, the players offensively and special teams were a joke. Starting the year off with backup QB’s, a backup offensive line, no receiving TE, no slot WR. Not to mention McCoy installed a very complicated offense. They couldn’t catch a punt if there life depended on it, etc.

They are a mystery team heading into this year, but they have a ton of new faces with a lot of potential. If they play there cards right, they can do some damage.

Hue Jackson will be available soon enough.

  12. One has to wonder if some of his assistants wouldn’t be better head coaches than him. I fail to see his success before becoming a head coach. The Dolphins Defense was nothing special under him. I think he is an honorable person, but I haven’t seen anything to indicate he is a great teacher. Belichick is a great teacher first and foremost- that is what makes for a great coach. Every roster is full of elite athletes- its the teaching that makes the difference.

  13. Gruden is a mediocre (often bad) HC and I hate the fact that Son-of-Al hired him as Raiders HC in a publicity stunt. But I take some level of comfort in the fact Vance Joseph is even worse as Broncos HC but that Elway is keeping him around because for Elway boot-licking talent is the most important trait he looks for in a HC.

  14. VJ comes across as extremely articulate and sharp in his interviews but on game day he appears to be a deer lost in the headlights. He likely needs Denver to make the playoffs to save his job, assuming he lasts that long.

  15. Still not a clue. He’ll be fired after week 4. What was John E thinking?

  16. I think people are too hard on Vance Joseph. People that was his first year as head coach what did every one expect for him to come in and just be super fantastic. Start winning championships well I got news for you that’s not gonna happen anytime soon. That was his first year so he was more of a rookie head coach. Give him a Solid 3 years as head coach and I’m sure he will get us championships. He just needs to learn the position and that comes over time not in just one season. So really just give the guy time and watch him grow and develop into a good head coach.

  17. It kills me,the Keemun is suppose to be some savor! I mean truly. Keemun been I the league like going on his 7th season. Yet he just all the sudden figured it out? Tell me when ever a qb just started being good after his 5 years in league? Oh ya never yet uneducated bronco fans believe he is the missing piece. I remember when he was suppose to be the guy for the rams should we talk about that again? I mean fact is if you really want to evaluate a qb and know if he is good or not. It’s this take his worse statistical year, and his best statistical year then take those away and then average out his stats. That’s what Keenum is a very poor mans below average qb. So have fun believing he is some savor. Cause being a niner fan I know a false savor when I see it. Cough..smith cough kap so trust me. This will be a very tuff year, you should of taken Allen and ran especially cause chubbs isn’t the pass rusher you want I’m not going into that. But just look at his college sacks he wasn’t a sack master by any means. He will be a top rushing and player I believe but he won’t be the second coming of watt I promise you.

  18. I think with elway, the bloom is off the rose. his drafts have been mediocre at best and he`s embarrassed about his selection of lynch. plus he is really hard to look at.

  19. I still remember when Vance was put in at safety for the Jets and he had that same blank expression.

Replace him with who? You mean, WHOM, PLURAL. So many great young coordinators these days.

They passed on Kyle Shannahan, who is rated much higher than Vance. And that youngster in Ramsville…did Elway even consider him? Sean McCoy has already forgotten more winning football than VJ.

Elway DID build, and buy, a HOF defense. But the restlessness with Fox (me too), Kubiak not able to return, left too many vacancies too soon to fire Vance. Vance didn’t do anything commendable, much less, remarkable, last season.

And you’ll never be able to explain the shoddy manner they let Wade go. It wasn’t a new coach wanting his own guy, they ignored him. And he left. With, at the time, a misspelled Super Bowl 50 ring…

Said it before, I’ll say it again, Vance was a panic hire and it has not worked out well. Nor will it.

in 2018, Denver will go 1-3, play the Jets, at home in whatever-the-frick-they-now-call-Mile-Hi these days, week 5 of the season, and lose. At home. To the JETS. And at that point the inevitable will / should take place.

    Vance will be/should be fired.

Hiring head coaches is a crapshoot, just like the draft.

We Raider fans have seen plenty of bad coaches over the past 20 or so years, so I guess that makes us experts in identifying bad coaches. Guess what, Vance Joseph is a bad coach.

  23. “And replace him with who?”

Could go back in time and hire Kyle Shanahan who was raring for the job and did more with a 49ers roster bereft of talent than VJ did with a lot more talent. Now the 49ers look like a potential playoff team while Denver looks headed for the basement.

But Elway wanted a puppet, not a HC sp here we are.

  24. Broncos will go 11-5 or 10-6 this season and likely win the AFC West. The talent is there, they’re deep at receiver, running back, and will have one of the greatest defenses. Broncos will be a playoff threat.
