Josh McCown: We have the “right guy” in Sam Darnold

AP

Josh McCown is one of the many quarterbacks to start for the Jets as they’ve looked for long-term success at the position, but it doesn’t sound like he thinks the team will have to continue searching.

McCown said at minicamp in June that rookie Sam Darnold was getting better every day and he continued to drop praise on his younger teammate during an interview on Sirius XM NFL Radio this weekend.

“With Sam, we have the right guy, he’s wired the right way, he loves the game, he asks the right questions and he’s willing to work … That’s the foundation, you have to have that,” McCown said.

Darnold is set to start training camp as the No. 3 man on the depth chart behind McCown and Teddy Bridgewater, but neither head coach Todd Bowles nor offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates has been reluctant to say that could change if Darnold impresses this summer. With camp starting on July 29, it won’t be too much longer before we start to find out if McCown’s right about the rookie.

  1. Jet fans finally have some legitimate hope at QB. Hard to project how good Darnold will be “, but based on his attitude and raw skill set, even if he’s not “Elite” he should be good enough for the Jets to be competitive for a while.

  2. Jets are not going to contend for a playoff spot. They should start Bridgewater with McCown holding the clipboard and Darnold upstairs in the box. If they catch lightning in a bottle with Bridgewater, play him. Then when Bradford goes on the DL, trade him to Arizona to back up Rosen.

  3. Man, is McCown a great teammate or what? Darnold is going to take McCown’s job at some point this season, and he’s out on the media circuit talking him up.

  4. Maybe . Maybe not. But you can’t find a franchise guy if you don’t try. I’d love for him and Allen to be good for a long time. It would be fun to see those two flinging it up and down the field.

  5. No offense to McCown, because he seems to be a genuinely good teammate; but given dude’s career on less than good football teams, I’m not sure I trust his judgement on who is the ‘right guy’.

  6. Let’s hope the Jets give Darnold a better shot than they gave Hackenberg. Never mind, they are trying to replace Cleveland as the factory of sadness.

  7. Josh gets it!!! He’s got a 1 year 10 million dollar deal, and he’s hyping up the rookie. Darnold can start, while McCown will gladly hold a clipboard making more in 1 year than I will in a lifetime. Harvard degree man!

@Vegaskid- You’ve got him mixed up with Ryan Fitzpatrick! Fitz was the Harvard guy. McCown may end up being a QB coach, possibly for the Jets after this year. He was offered some kind of Assistant Coach role with the Browns before the 2017 season, but declined it because he wanted to play another year or two. At this point he is ready to take the role of Mentor.

  10. That’s a gracious thing for McCown to say given that if his comments are correct Darnold will eventually take his job. Kudos to McCown for saying that.

  11. To bad the dolphins didn’t take one of the qb`s in this years draft. would have been cool see 3 first round guys start their careers all in the same division.

  12. Did anyone see Darnold play in college? You know actually watch 2 or 3 of his college games? If you did you know McCown is just playing the game until he starts again.

  13. Darnold will be an interception machine and a fumbler in cold weather. He will not make the cut, sorry jets fans.

  14. Nobody knows at this point how any of the QBs taken in the draft this year will work out, whether 1st rounders or otherwise. Until they play in full speed, regular season games its impossible to know if it will be bust or boom.

What? No. Chances are that 2 or 3 will be busts to some degree. Only a low-life Patriots fan would wish for another 10 years of inept competition in their weak division.

And before someone starts talking about convoluted win percentages of common oppobents and such, just remember that the Bills, Jets and Dolphins, COMBINED, have averaged one playoff win every fpur years since 2002. ABYSMAL

Didn’t the Jets say the same thing about Bryce Petty, Geno Smith & Mark Sanchez?

Ill give you that. They absultely said those things. But each guy is a different prospect and I think their odds with Darnold are far better than the others.

  17. Hold on here. The guy is still a rookie making the jump to the NFL. There is already enormous pressure on him. Don’t pile on more. Even Troy Aikman was, what, 0-11 in 1989, his first season as a starter in Dallas.

  18. “Not Ryan 6 INTs in one game Fitzpatrick???”

No, he means Ryan “6 TDs in one game” Fitzpatrick. You people have such good memories.

Settle down sparky. I think it would have been cool. Think about this, if Darnold is better than Allen, the jets have bragging rights for leaping the bills as everyone knew they were looking to go up to 3-4. If Allen is better then Buffalo has bragging rights for taking the wrong guy first . If both fail it’s a wash, but if both are good, then then the prospect of 2 young studs in the same division flingingthe ball around would excite any football fan.

  20. I have more confidence in Darnold than I have had in any rookie QB since Pennington. An above poster mentioned Sanchez and Geno and he’s right. The difference though is people here weren’t sold on Geno after his draft process antics, and some of his declarations.. plus, Geno was a 2nd round pick. When will people stop acting like the Jets took him top 5 in the draft? The only hype around Geno came from the media. The Sanchez hype came from Rex Ryan.

too right man… say what you will about McCown’s talents or Darnold as a prospect, the man is a class act and, as far as I can remember, always has been.

  22. I thought Josh Rosen & Sam Darnold were the two best QB prospects in this last draft class, I think both are going to be high level starting QB.

I look forward to many years of Donald vs Allen division rivalry. Here’s hoping for both franchises.

    =================================

Darnold is going to be much better than Allen, his passes actually hit his WR’s hands in stride unlike Allen’s, who cannot hit the ocean from the beach.

  24. Why do they have to hype every rookie QB before they ever take their first NFL snap?
    Yes the HOF is calling.

We shall see who is better, will take a few seasons but I am happy for your Jets. I feel pretty good about Josh Allen, again will take a few seasons. Bottomline, I am just hoping the Pats get beat up soon!

  26. The problem for Darnold is can be play in actual football weather rather than the perfect conditions he is used too.Plus what will he do in the conditions in the northeast between Thanksgiving and the first week in January.
