Derrick Henry viewed as lead back, Dion Lewis behind him on Titans’ depth chart

The Titans made a change at running back this offseason, saying goodbye to DeMarco Murray and signing Dion Lewis. But it’s holdover Derrick Henry who’s expected to be the starter.

That’s the word from Jim Wyatt of the team’s website, who reports that Henry is viewed as the lead back.

Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur has referred to Henry and Lewis as 1A and 1 B. It seems likely that Henry will get more carries while Lewis gets more playing time on passing downs.

Last year Henry had 176 carries for 744 yards while splitting duties with Murray, and Lewis led the Patriots with 180 carries for 896 yards. The Titans would love to have both players maintain that level of production.

  1. That’s going to be a hell of a duo. Henry still has fresh legs….people sleep on him. Great big back. Expecting big things.

  2. That is an awesome duo. Big power back and a pass catching little guy. Should be a fun offense to watch

  3. Thats going to work well. Lewis is a great back, but best to manage the pounding he takes. A big guy like Henry can take that with Lewis as a really nice switch up. That way you maximize your bang for the buck from both of them.

  4. People keep saying Lewis is a “little pass catching back” but he’s way more than that. He proved last season that he can be a feature back that runs between the tackles with his unique running style. He always finds a way to shimmy and twist his way to fall forward for extra yards between the tackles. The only question is injury risk and if they are 1-A and 1-B then that should mitigate those concerns and it should be an amazing tandem.

  5. Every team should carry a big body power back like Henry for goal line situations. Seems like scat backs are all the rage right now but having a big man to throw his body at the pile is huge in converting on short yardage scenarios

  6. It should be fun to watch. LaFleur didn’t have a back like Lewis last year. Since he can move out to the slot, I wouldn’t be surprised if they run some 2 back offense. I’m really pulling for Wadley to make the team. This could be the year to carry 4 backs as Fluelan does well on ST.and should be better as a reserve in this offense if called upon.

  7. The Titans screwed up…Time works against running backs…Their best years almost always occur earlier rather than later…yet this dumas team wasted Henry’s first 2 years in the league by continuing to give Murray all the carries…who redshirts a running back twice? lolol

When the Titans beat the Jags twice last season, Henry ran wild in both games. Expect a repeat performances this season!

You do realize they fall off because of the pounding they take (or number of carries), not their age? Dude is still very fresh for a 3rd year back because of the lack of carries.

Mariota 39 Tds 24 ints over last 2 seasons 7 rushing Tds. Prescott 45 Tds 17 ints, 12 rushung Tds over same span.

2 words for both of you…Mike Mularkey

  11. Football wise…excellent move. Think they will do even better on the ground.

Fantasy wise…it’s hard to commit to either as a starter, unless injuries involved. Good reserves to have, as 3rd/4th guys.

Please. Henry ran Jalen Ramsey over two years in a row for scores, and then he blew past the Jags defense on a screen pass for a score at the end of last year. All victories by the way. Come back and talk to us when your football IQ goes up.

  13. He just went up a few spots for his position on some fantasy football boards. The craziness will begin soon. Everyone optimistic that this year is theirs and the secret weapon will be that 2nd/3rd year sleeper that no one will ever know about but you, especially when you reach in the 5th round to take him.
