Report: Johnny Manziel traded to Montreal

Johnny Manziel can’t get on the field in Hamilton. Now he’s expected to get a chance in Montreal.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have agreed to trade Manziel to the Montreal Alouettes, according to Duane Ford of TSN.

Alouettes head coach Mike Sherman knows Manziel well, having coached him at Texas A&M. Manziel’s redshirt freshman season in 2011 was Sherman’s final season coaching the Aggies.

The Alouettes have already tried three quarterbacks (Drew Willy, Jeff Mathews and Matt Shiltz) and have the worst offense in the Canadian Football League. If Manziel can’t beat those guys out, that’s a very bad sign.

It’s hard to believe the Alouettes would trade for Manziel if they aren’t going to play him, so it appears that Manziel may soon, finally, get on the field in Canada.

  1. Good! Let’s see what you got kid, I for one will be cheering for you! A success story would be great, for a change around here.

  2. Hell yeah! This is what happens when you work hard, shut up and don’t do drugs.

    I’m rooting for the kid.

At the very least, he will make Football more popular in Montreal.

  3. The Ticats appear to have decided that they are dedicated to Jeremiah Masoli as their QB this season and they would like to get out from under the weekly questions about Manziel. From an Als standpoint, look, their QB play out of Drew Willy was not exactly stellar. As things stand the REDBLACKS could run away with the east and with the Argos reeling right now, the door is definitely open for the Als to make a run at a playoff spot.

  4. The Tigercats got two first round picks and some players for a CFL unproven QB Manziel LOLOLOLOLOLOL

  5. While this may be good for Manziel in terms of playing time, I gotta think being in Montreal with a very huge nightlife scene is going to be a huge temptation.

I really hope he does not succumb to his demons. This coming from a guy who made as many Johnny 8 Ball jokes as anyone, but if is able to battle his way back and keep his nose clean it will be a great story.

  6. The deal is as follows
To Montreal – Manziel, OT Tony Washington, OT Landon Rice
To Hamilton – DE Jamaal Westerman, WR Chris Williams, 1st rounders in 2020 and 2021.

The Als are definitely mortgaging their future in the hopes that Johnny Football can be productive here.

  7. Man there are some morons commenting on here. From the guy making fun of another mans name, to the guy saying “his guy” could truck Johnny on the ice(doubt you even know “your guy”, and Johnny would make “ your guy” look like he was on ice skates in a football game, that’s why they play their respective sports…that’s what they are good at), to the guy saying Masoli is trash, cmon man. He has how many 300 yard passing games this year? I think it may be CFL all time record setting. If you’re going to try to bash on a Manziel at least look like you have a clue.

  8. Just keep on trucking Johnny. If all goes well, you’ll be on an NFL Roster soon enough. Kid knows he messed up bad. In a very short time, Johnny went from College mega superstar to the pros and now is fighting for playing time in Canada. Laying on the bed he made. At least he is fighting back. Keep talking crap, he’ll probably end up on your roster.

  9. It’s telling how him with a rolled up bill got 1000x more media coverage, including here, than Beckham did showing him with a blunt and cocaine.

  10. On behalf of all Browns fans everywhere, would y’all please, PLEASE ignore stories about this dude. He grew it, now he can chew it. Washed up has-been who MIGHT have become a decent backup, but drank and druggied himself out of the NFL. Please, ignore the guy. Thanks.

How long before TO signs with Montreal? Those two resurrecting their careers on the same team would sell some tickets.

Why does everyone in America think that CFL teams have trouble selling tickets?

  12. So Montreal trades for a QB who, if he plays well, could well be gone to the NFL after next season. And if he doesn’t play well, he’ll probably be gone even sooner.
And they trade their next 2 1st rounders for him.
Does Haslam own this team, too?

  13. “This is what happens when you work hard, shut up and don’t do drugs.

    I’m rooting for the kid.”

I get what you’re saying, and yeah it’d be great for him to turn it around…BUT, can’t we celebrate the people that made it to the NFL because they worked hard, and didn’t flush their brightest future down the toilet. I’m more impressed with the people that exercised self control for their whole lives instead of the party player that’s just now trying to get their life together.

  14. Out of T&M I predicted and rooted for this kid to fail. Did for the same with Tebow in the Minors. I realize I am the negative Nancy and if anyone fails it should be me. Manziel is going somewhere he can play and Tebow is hitting the ball far past I could imagine. I thank both of them for making me look at me.

  15. You don’t trade 2 number one picks to sit Manziel on the bench. Johnny will be starter as soon as he arrives.

  16. Uh….tap the brakes, suckers. Manziel ain’t beating out Jeff Matthews. Matthews played at Cornell…ever heard of it?

Cornell? Yes, it is where you play when the schools that recruited Johnny Football don’t recruit you.

Why does everyone in America think that CFL teams have trouble selling tickets?
    ——–

Because people in America have a superiority complex and had no idea the CFL existed before Manziel signed in Hamilton and the lame stream media started covering it. Truth be told, the CFL does very well in Canada and it’s a fun game to watch.

  18. He could light up the entire CFL the rest of the year and it won’t make a bit of difference in the NFL. It doesn’t translate at all, just ask yourself the question, if this was a viable route into the NFL, wouldn’t the top QB’s in the CFL be headed toward the NFL year after year?

It’s not how far you fall, but how high you bounce back that counts. I give credit to those who can battle their own inner demons and defeat them. He’s getting his 2nd chance and probably last chance if this one fails like the last one.

  20. ow long before TO signs with Montreal? Those two resurrecting their careers on the same team would sell some tickets.

To is a hall of famer.. what would he be resurrecting?

  21. I would love to see Johnny flourish in the CFL. I hope you become the greatest quarterback of all time in that league. I hope the fans up there shower you with love, You did not crap on any of their teams yet. But I will never root for you to get back to the NFL. Yeah, one of the teams you crapped on was my team in the NFL.

  22. There’s no way shape or form this game will not be available here in the states. ESPN was reduced to broadcasting young kids playing video games yesterday Game times will be moved, and whatever else is needed if necessary for America to see his first start. I for one want to see him succeed.

  23. His arm is better than 2 yard Tommy’s at this point. I just mention it so the NE bandwagoners have something to do. “Pats are in your head! Your obsessed! Other meaningless nonsense to mask our insecurity and doubt!”

  24. Oh no!!! Stop the world — Johnny Manziel just got traded in the CFL!!!!!!!!

    Who cares?

  25. johnny football was never given a chance in Cleveland. He had the most wins of any Cleveland quarterback in his final season there but was cut because he was falsely accused of a crime that he was never convicted with.

What was he traded for? Some maple candy, a keg of Molson Canadian and Labatt Blue, and a signed Wayne Gretsky jersey?

    ————

Two six-packs and an unsigned jersey. This is Johnny Manziel we’re talking about here.

  27. “Why does everyone in America think that CFL teams have trouble selling tickets”?

Maybe because the CFL averages 24,644 fans per game.

  28. Manziel now has his opportunity. The problem for him is to learn a new playbook very quickly and get on the field with receivers that he does not know. Montreal will feel compelled to rush him into action. They throw him into action too quickly and it will be a disaster.

While this is a good move for Manziel, it is potentially a risky move for Hamilton as they do not have an experienced backup. It would’ve made more sense in the trade for Hamilton to get one of Montreal’s nicked up QBs.

Assuming he crashes and burns as Montreal’s starter, I can’t wait for all of the asinine comments that’ll follow. Just like all of the other NFL or NCAA ‘big names’ that fail in the CFL (Trent Richardson, Troy Smith, Josh Freeman, Rickie Williams etc. etc. etc.). The commentators won’t be able to get their heads around the notion that they weren’t good enough for the CFL so all sorts of lame excuses will be invented.

You mean like Warren Moon or Kurt Warner?

  30. I watched a recent Montreal game, curious to see how Mike Sherman was doing. They are clearly the worst team in the CFL. Totally inept. I don’t lay that on Sherman as the talent level. It looked like a high school team vs. a college team.
By the way, if you have a need for football, CFL is fun to watch.

Anybody who is listening to Manziel’s Podcast knows this guy is not committed to Football. Frat Boy Party DNA cannot be removed

CFL is not going to shift any games around just for you. I’m sure they’d be happy to have a US audience, money you know, but they don’t need to depend on it. Where do you think Canada is, anyway? They have 1 additional time zone further east and 1 less in the west when you include Alaska, times match up pretty well. If you want to watch CFL games, with or without little Johnny Turdball, you adjust, why should they?

Are you confusing him with Brian Hoyer? Manziel only won 2 of his starts in Cleveland, while Hoyer won 10.

  35. How did Mike Sherman go from having control of the football operation in Green Bay to being in the CFL?

One of the great mysteries of life.

  36. Johnny football is soon to be the biggest American hero since donald trump in the great white north.

  37. Why does this sport keep recycling head coaches? Can Mike Sherman coach or not? He has a long resume, but so do most people that can’t hold a job…

Johnny has a grand total of 15 total pro games to his credit and none since 2015. If having an experienced backup was their concern, then they never would have signed him to begin with.

How did Mike Sherman go from having control of the football operation in Green Bay to being in the CFL?

One of the great mysteries of life.

    ——————————————————————————————–

If you remember, Sherman almost got his head handed to him by Warren Sapp after the game in 1992 where Sapp blindsided his left tackle (Chad Clifton) so hard after an interception that he almost killed him. Sherman yelled at Sapp after the game not only for the hit but also for taunting Clifton as he lay there on the ground, and Sapp went ballistic screaming at Sherman to put a uniform on. Clifton was on the ground for over 15 minutes before they got him on a stretcher and into an ambulance to take him to the hospital. It almost ended his career and was one of the most brutal hits in NFL history. it wouldn’t be legal to do what Sapp did (the hit or the taunting) today, but it was legal back then.
I always respected Sherman for defending his player against Sapp, but I wasn’t sorry to see him go as Packers head coach. I hope he does well in the CFL.

  40. And if Kaepernick was serious about playing football again, he’d be doing the same as Manziel here. Playing somewhere, anywhere to show he’s hungry and that he still has something left in the tank.

My opinion…..Kaepernick isn’t serious about playing. He’s using the appearance of wanting to play as the platform for his fight with the NFL.

  41. Sherman doesnt know a sober Johnny, doubt the kid even remembers the guy….oh well good luck anyway….

  42. Manziel is making an effort, Tylawspick6 you however are taking joy in someone else’s shortcomings to try and make up for your own. I hope your last stop is soon and somewhere without internet access. I’m hoping Manziel becomes a success story.
