Kirk Cousins, Stefon Diggs get off to a great start

AP

The Vikings paid free-agent quarterback Kirk Cousins a ton of money in the offseason. More recently, they paid less money (but still a lot) to fourth-year receiver Stefon Diggs. On Saturday night, Cousins and Diggs provided a glimpse regarding what a pair of guys making more than $42 million per year combined can do.

Cousins and Diggs connected three times on three targets in the opening drive of the game, capping the effort with a one-yard touchdown reception. After the game, the two players spoke about their still-budding relationship.

“We have been working for nine weeks in OTAs and several weeks here in training camp,” Cousins told reporters. “Even over the summer, we were thinking about football. We finally get to go out into a game setting and produce. It is great to see [Diggs] do what we know he can do. We’ll need to see a lot more of that all season long.”

Diggs seems to expect it, based on what he already knows of Cousins.

“It’s just Kirk being Kirk,” Diggs said regarding a 28-yard connection between the two teammates. “He’s a good quarterback making some great throws. I’m just trying to do my job to the best of my ability. He gave me a great ball and I’ve got to make the play. That’s all.”

Diggs nevertheless realizes that a lot more work needs to be done.

“It’s still a growing process,” Diggs said. “We are still going as we’re going. It’s not done so developing that chemistry is really key to just making plays when they’re called, him giving me a chance and me making the play. That’s all it real boils down to.”

The more Cousins can develop that connection with other targets in the passing game — from Adam Thielen to Kyle Rudolph to whoever ends up being the No. 3 and No. 4 receivers — the more of a return the Vikings will realize on their huge investment in Cousins.

In four weeks, the first official installment when Cousins puts his $28 million per year on the line against 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and his $27.5 million per year.

  1. Its the first drive of the first preseason game.
Its nice that it worked out that way.
Beyond that, its really not worth discussion.

  2. In four weeks, the first official installment when Cousins puts his $28 million per year on the line against 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and his $27.5 million per year.

Just the way you put that, makes you sound a bit jealous!

  3. Cousins will be great in MN. The team will make Kirk better, which will make the team better. Keenum was a 3rd stringer no one wanted before he played on this team. Now he is the starter in Denver and didn’t look very good yesterday.

Cousins with Redskins = Really Good
    Cousins with Vikings = Great

  4. “He’s a good quarterback making some great throws. I’m just trying to do my job to the best of my ability. He gave me a great ball and I’ve got to make the play. That’s all.”

If it’s “that’s all”, why the showboating after every catch? It’s becoming more prevalent throughout the league and is annoying. Act like you’ve made that 8 yard catch before …

If Jerry Rice had to perform “a scripted act” after every catch, some of his games would still be going on ….

  5. The way Murray, Roc Thomas and Mike Boone looked and Cook waiting on the shelf ready to go it’s going to be a nightmare for other teams. The team is dreading the decision between Thomas and Boone because neither one will clear waivers. Good problems.

  6. At what point during the preseason will the NFL cancel the regular season, hand the Lombardi to the the greatest team ever assembled and call it a day?

If you are trying to show over the top arrogance as is typical of this comment section, at least specify who the greatest team ever assembled is, otherwise assumption leads to the Eagles.

  8. It’s the first preseason game – so it really doesn’t mean too much.

But it’s better to have your team look good than bad.

All three QB’s posted a QB rating of over 100 (Siemian 111.2, Sloter 123.2, Cousins 150.0).

Murray averaged nearly 11 YPC on the first drive (4 carries). Roc Thomas was a dual threat rushing and receiving.

The defense made Keenum struggle in the two series he played.

    Next up – Jacksonville.

  9. Are you jealous or auditioning for a job at Forbes Magazine? Otherwise why do you feel the need to mention salaries? Are you going to do this for every player or just the ones making 8 figures. They’re professional athletes who make millions of dollars, we all know this. They play football for a living so they’re probably underpaid. Unless you’re either paying them yourself or you’re the cap-ologist for the Vikings, what those players make is no more relevant than the stats they register in a preseason game.

  10. If you weren’t impressed with the Viking opening drive, you are lying to yourself. Preseason or no….The smell of Packer fear is very pungent….

    Yet another fake claim.
No vikings fans has claimed any paper championship.
Only a Gumby fan making stuff up.

Meanwhile plenty of packer fans have already bragged about a preseason Super Bowl.
One fan was bragging in Nov 2017 about being preseason Super Bowl favorites for the 2018 season.

One signed a huge extension in the last week, while they became the highest paid player in the history of the nfl as of his signing.

Its the first game they played together ever… and Min. Needs them to play great as they jave invested a lot in them.

  13. Running game was also fun to watch. Murray seemed to have more speed and burst than he had all of last year. Cook-Murray should be quite the 1-2 punch. And to say Roc Thomas had an impressive game would be an understatement.

Glad to see Diggs and cousins earning the combined 125$ mil guranteed the first game of the preseason.
    ——————————————

Coming from a fan of the team that pays Fabio $2 million per sack or $350k per tackle.

Diggs did just sign a new reasonably priced contract.

Cousins is far from the highest paid player in the history of the NFL. Not in the amount per season or the total amount of the contract.

  16. Zimmers’ Counsins QB decision good be a great union for the Minnesota Vikings.

Until proven otherwise the NFC goes through Phildelphia.
And then there’s LA, New Orleans, Atlanta and possibly the 49ers, Packers and Panthers. Should be another great season in the NFC and I expect the Vikings to be in the thick of it come January, don’t know if they’ll make it to February but they have a chance.

“Isn’t the offense used in the pre-season game 1 a little less complex?”

    ====================

Ok. So we should see a amazing performance from your “franchise” QB Saturday right?

And why isn’t that “far superior to the Packers roster” able to cover up some injuries on the O-line? One would think such a amazing roster has incredible depth right? Why is the Barneys brass panicking and calling retired players with such a incredible deep roster?

Seems like things worked out just fine. Thanks for your concern.

Sounds like someone is a bit jealous, The Packers just might finish #3 in the NFCN this year.. It feels good to kick a bit of sand back in your face after 2011-2015 and your attitude.. Rodgers is never going to be the same again, and Hundley??? HAHAHAHA what a joke..

  19. I don’t care if it’s the first preseason game. There was a crispness to the entire Viking team, including the subs. I’ll admit it. They looked good, preseason or not.

  20. Boy, for that kind of money and this love fest with Diggs, I hope for the sake of the franchise and the poor fans that “Kissing Cousins” can pull it off. I mean..4 super bowl appearances and 4 losses. Yeah that’s a championship franchise.

==========================================================================================Please. While there may be a diamond in the rough here, right now rosters are stuffed with players who do some seemingly fantastic things in the preseason and are never heard from again. Pre-season heroes clear waivers all of the time. Ryan Nall of the Bears ran for 95 yards on 5 carries. Nobody really cares. Of course, Bears’ fans are a bit more realistic and cautiously skeptical than Vikings’ fans, rather than proclaiming everyone that they have is the best. May want to see if Roc Thomas can do some things like this again.

For instance, see average ex-Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater. Vikings’ fans even talked about how good he was at avoiding turning over the ball, when he had 22 INT’s against 28 TD’s and 11 fumbles in 2 years.

Don’t quite know what the excitement is about the great Mike Boone playing against scrubs and rushing for 22 yards on 12 carries. But who knows? If he can average 1.8 yards or more in another preseason game, he’ll really be on his way!

  22. It may be superficial but as fans we’ve waited months to just see what Cousins looks like out there in a Viking uni. Having him play well and the team do the same around him was a thrill. Most Vikes fans understand the nature of the curse but the championship push is on from the ownership on down. Since Zim took over they’ve continued to improve. Fun times for Vikings fan!

Agree with whoever posted about Diggs celebrating after that catch, but it was a hell of a catch.

  23. And a kicker missing a chip shot and it would of been 2. Your point? Games are won and lost one one lucky or unlucky play all the time.

  24. It was just one drive but better one good drive that showed accuracy in passes, good running and a TD. Than say just a FG. Or bunch on incompletes and a pick.

  25. Impressed with Murrey. Looks 100% this year.
I hope which ever talented RB the Vikes end up needing to cut that they trade him out of the division instead. All of the Vikings RB would be an upgrade for the packers. I am so glad they passed on Cook.

    _______________

When he put pen to paper he was the highest paid player… his contract is GURANTEED ALL of it.

For example Kaepernick signed 126$ mil deal with only 13 GURANTEED after being released he only made a little over 30% of the 126 million, just over 39 million. That’s why Cousins contract was “bigger” at the time of his signing.

  27. Vikings looked really good on the road for their first preseason game. That’s it nothing more. But as usual you have annoying fans bringing up things that didn’t have anything to do with this performance.

  28. I’m tampering down my excitement, but damn were those some pretty passes, especially the one to the two yard line. The throwing window was microscopic.

Also the young kicker booting a 57 yarder was fun to see, I know it’s mile high, but he still had another 5-10 yards of clearance and it was right down the middle. He made his other ones too, down the middle. Refreshing not having to clench as the ball angles toward the goal posts on every fg and extra point.

$84 million for Cousins total deal.

Many NFL players have signed $100 million+ contracts.

Cousins just signed a shorter term deal.

He has enough confidence in his ability to sign a shorter term deal. Unlike some QBs that ink 7 year deals and then start passive/aggressive actions to let their team know they need a new deal with years left on their current contract.
$100 million guaranteed for Matt Ryan.

Ryan has a higher value per year, a higher guarantee and his deal was inked

  30. Ryan has a higher value per year, a higher guarantee and his deal was inked
    _________

He is but he signed hat 2 months after the Vikings made Cousins the highest paid player in NFL history.he wasn’t very long the faCT that he ever was much like Joe Flacco ( who actually won something) is crazy
