Niners set to sign Alfred Morris

An MRI performed after 49ers running back Jerick McKinnon was injured in Sunday’s practice showed a calf strain that will keep him out of action for a while.

As a result of that development and Matt Breida‘s shoulder injury, the Niners have decided to bring in some outside help. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Monday that the team plans to sign Alfred Morris pending a physical.

Morris played for Shanahan in Washington during his first two NFL seasons and ran 611 times for 2,888 yards and 20 touchdowns over those years.

“Alf did a great job for us for the two years I was with him,” Shanahan said Monday, via 95.7 The Game. “It’s not flashy, but he runs extremely hard. He’s very reliable. You block him for zero, usually he can get at least one. He’s a hard-nosed runner you can keep handing the ball off to.”

Morris spent four years in Washington overall and then moved on to the Cowboys for the last two seasons. He ran 115 times for 547 yards and a touchdown last season.

  1. Good character guy who has some tread left on the tires. Don’t see a lot of downside with the signing.

  2. I’m a big fan of Alfred Morris. All you have to do is get the offensive line blocking laterally and he’ll intuitively find the crease and run to daylight.

  3. My old pet turtle was faster than Morris. Probably shouldn’t be an NFL Runningback when that’s the case. He was only good as long as RGIII was his QB and they were threatening the Option.

  4. Ever since I read that article on him when he first broke into the league about him driving some old jalopy car, I’ve been a fan. He’s a humble guy and a hard worker, glad his career continues.

  5. I’m a big fan of Alfred Morris. He is very underrated. Best player ever from FAU….my school!

  6. Oh be realistic. He’s a camp back. He won’t make the team. Breida, Mostert and Williams – there is only room for 2 of them.

  7. Morris isn’t stopwatch fast. Morris isn’t a huge passing game threat so he’s really only a 2 down back.

BUT….his rookie year he broke nearly twice as many tackles as the next best RB AND he spent two years not getting banged up since he was a backup to Zeke.

I think he has a lot of tread left and wished the skins would have taken another look at him.

  8. He fits the scheme very well, as Kyle alluded to in his comment. I’m happy for him, as he his a humble guy. He, RG3 and London fletcher were the reasons I supported the skins when I started watching NFL midway through that 2012 season.
    Shame they let him go.

  9. Morris is a very solid NFL RB. Doesn’t have measurable’s that jump off the sheet, but he’s got great vision, pretty durable, tough, pass blocks well. Only issue I remember him having was a slight case of fumbleitis in his 2nd year at Wash. Good sign for Niners. Still not sure why the Colts didn’t try and go out and get him.

Morris instantly becomes the best back in Clara, the rest are trash just like their stadium.”

Not as trashy as the Cowgirls quarterback. Enjoy 8-8 for the rest of your lifetime
