Pete Carroll on roster turnover: It’s a thrill to go through this

Seahawks linebacker K.J. Wright said recently that the massive turnover of the roster this offseason has left the team with a level of hunger that wasn’t in place in recent seasons because there are so many players trying to prove themselves.

For those optimistic about how things will turn out in Seattle, that is reminiscent of 2010, 2011 and 2012 as the Seahawks team that would go on to win a Super Bowl was being put together. Others see how many players have moved on and wonder if the team can have the same success twice.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said that players change but “the philosophy doesn’t” and counts himself firmly in the camp that believes their philosophy will bear fruit once again.

“They’re just different people,” Carroll said, via Albert Breer of SI.com. “Nobody knew who Richard was or who Kam was back in the day. There are guys in that room right now that they’re going to know about in time. It’s thrilling. It’s a thrill to go through this and watch it happen, watch it emerge. There’s so much energy, so much positive juice from these guys, the effort they’re giving. Wait and see. I ain’t worried one bit. Not one bit. I see who they are and what they’re doing.”

One big difference Carroll notes between this team and the first one he built is that they have the quarterback position settled with Russell Wilson. The coach calls that “so instrumental in your future,” although it remains to be seen how well they are going to outfit the team around him.

  1. Yep… A good QB like Russ could carry a lousy roster to 8-8. Thankfully, this team still has talent on both sides of the ball and Pete ALWAYS fields a good D. Oh, and no Blair Walsh!

  2. I don’t think T2 and Mcdougald are going to be as great of a safety Tandem as Thomas and Chancellor, but our new corners (Flowers and Griffin) will be as good if not better than Sherman and Browner/Maxwell. Bobby and KJ are still in their prime and have all the experience under their belt. We have talent on the Dline. It’s just whether or not they can put it all together. It’s going to be similar to 2012 season rather than 2013 but I think there is definitely promising young guys on this roster.

  3. Yeah, we’ll see how much Carroll likes it when the losses start mounting! Ha ha ha ha!

  4. I’ve never been a fan of Pete Carroll, but to manage some of the personalities he had on his teams must have been exhausting.

  5. It is a thrill for Petey because he would rather coach guys who don’t talk back to him but do what he tells them because they don’t know better. It is also a thrill for those who are rooting against Seattle, because even though attitude is important, ability is also important. Even the faithful 12th are not optimistic about Seattle’s chances for the playoffs. The first preseason game is an ugly loss to the Colts, and it is a preview of the regular season. Number 1 draft pick Rashad Penny could only get 2 yards per carry. No wonder draft analysts rated him to be a second to third round pick. Nice job drafting. LOL

I know you love to be one of the chief seahawk bashers, but judging the team by one preseason game is silly even for you.

Did you know they used him largely as a blocker in the game? News flash for you, blockers don’t gain a lot of yards.

  7. BelgiumHawk – “…It’s going to be similar to 2012 season rather than 2013…”

Agreed, and in 2012 we were what 20 some seconds and a defensive stop away from the NFC Championship game!?

    I can live with that.

    Go ‘Hawks!!!

  8. As a Hawks fan I’m prepared for something more like the 2011 season than 2012 but certainly the range of 7-9 to 9-7 is likely. 2011 is when we loaded up the LOB for the first time (Earl, Kam, Sherm and Browner) along with guys like KJ Wright, Doug Baldwin and others.

It’s possible we do ok but we do have a very tough schedule both in the divisional games as well as outside them.
