Xavier Grimble to miss time after hand surgery

The Steelers have been without Vance McDonald for most of training camp because of a foot injury and now another tight end is out with an injury.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports that Xavier Grimble will miss time after having surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb/wrist area. Grimble did not play against the Packers on Thursday night and is expected to miss the rest of the preseason with hopes of being well enough to play in Week One.

Grimble had 16 catches for 150 yards and three touchdowns over the last two seasons.

With Grimble and McDonald ailing, the Steelers have Jesse James, Bucky Hodges, Pharoah McKeever and Christian Scotland-Williamson at tight end. James is the only one with regular season experience, so any setbacks in recovery for Grimble and McDonald will likely lead to a roster move.

It’s always been a mystery as to why the Steelers have an unlimited budget at WR, but are reluctant to invest a high draft pick or free agent dollars on a TE who can get up the seam. With Roethlisberger at QB it is almost a no brainer.

I mean, they did sign Ladarius Green a couple years back. Had he not been damaged goods, they’d be set at the position. They then got Vance McDonald, whom they obviously thought would be a major contributor, but he also seems like a walking injury at this point. At this point, they don’t exactly have excess cap space to sign anyone. And TE has never been a position that team pours money into. Even when Heath was around, I highly doubt he was in the top 5-10 in TE earners in the league.

Re: the draft, they’ve had so many glaring needs past 2-3 years (e.g., ILB, CB, OLB, WR with the revolving door after AB), and there are only so many high picks. They were rumored to be interested in Maxx Williams the year he went, but Ravens got him a pick earlier. Given how his career’s gone, probably better it worked out that way (then again, Steelers used that pick on Golson, so not like they came out ahead). Maybe next year.
