Trump criticizes ESPN for not showing national anthem

Hours after his longtime lawyer pleaded guilty to making an illegal payoff to a porn star, President Trump tried to change the subject by going back to one of his favorite topics: The national anthem played before NFL games.

Trump said at a rally in West Virginia that he was outraged to learn ESPN has decided not to show the national anthem before Monday Night Football games this season.

“You’re proud of our country, you’re proud of our history, and unlike the NFL, you always honor and cherish our great American flag,” Trump said. “It was just announced by ESPN that rather than defending our anthem, our beautiful, beautiful national anthem and defending our flag, they’ve decided that they just won’t broadcast when they play the national anthem. We don’t like that.”

ESPN said its research indicated that viewers aren’t interested in watching the anthem, although the network also said it could change its mind and show the anthem if there’s viewer demand for it.

  1. Enough already from all sides of this argument. The anthem used to never be on TV, now it is and a point of controversy. Don’t show it and let’s play some football for God’s sake!

  2. Just put a big flag on the screen, play the anthem and don’t show anyone. There problem solved.

  3. I guess this is supposed to distract the country from the fact that his long-time personal lawyer just implicated him in a felony to even get that office?!

    Shut up and go away!

  4. The anthem used to never be shown. Players routinely sat and stretched during the anthem. In fact, they used to never even come out for it.

This whole issue is made up to rile up his base. He’s only angry that they’re not showing it because then he can’t complain about people kneeling.

    MOVE ON.

  5. He’s circling the drain. Him and the rest of the obviously-compromised GOP know they’re done. Now they’re just raiding the shelves before the buzzer sounds.

  6. Honest question – why does it matter whether or not the national anthem is shown? Are people are home standing at attention when the anthem is being played?

  7. Shocking. His former campaign manager just convicted, his personal attorney indicted and the first two congressmen to support him recently charged with insider trading and misuse of campaign funds respectively. So let’s make it about ESPN and the anthem right? You people who are still supporting this disgraceful pig should be ashamed of yourselves but I don’t think shame is an emotion you’re capable of feeling

  8. I’m outraged that his Attorney named him as a co-conspirator in a federal crime when pleading guilty and because of his cronies in congress he won’t be impeached.

But sure … the anthem …

  9. Fake patriotism from a fake president. Tell us again how you proudly served this country and earned the right to criticize.

  10. Just let the issue die Mr Trump. You’ve got 2 wars in Yemen and Iraq, the idiot media trying to convince everyone that the election was fake, trade wars with China Canada and Mexico but all you have time for is if 4 or 5 of a private companies thousands of employees voluntarily participate in the anthem?

  11. It’s convenient for him to hide behind patriotic symbols while he has been far less than patriotic himself. I watched about 3 minutes of this rally. During that segment, not much of what he said was actually true….more so it was a spin of the facts. His fans were gobbling it up. It was kind of a scary sight to see, the way people idolize this guy.

  12. I agree with Trump. We change the way we do things because of a few players who can’t follow the rules and should be fired in any normal job don’t want to comply. And to protest nothing.

  13. He should learn the words to the anthem before criticizing anything surrounding it. And maybe he shouldn’t have dodged the draft – that’s far more disrespectful than staying in a tunnel. And his cohort Jerry Jones should probably remove his hat before lambasting any players.

  14. It’s interesting to observe how patriotic Trump has become since he decided to be a politician. Particularly since when he had a chance to serve our country in the military during the Viet Nam War he instead found a way to get five draft deferrals.

  15. My demand is that the Cheeto man stay out of sports and try to run the country…I say try because he isn’t doing a very good job of it…

  16. Am I nuts? Or did they never show the anthem anyway?? That goes for ALL of the networks. Of course, the networks, and that includes ESPN, would show the anthem before important games such as the season opener or maybe playoff games preceding the conference championship games or Super Bowl, but never before an average regular season game. Am I wrong??

  17. *sigh*

He’s got a few, MUCH more important, things to worry about. The “don’t look behind the curtain”…”what about this over here” nonsense needs to end.

  18. Is the NFL making this decision or the broadcaster ESPN? Trump will blame the NFL regardless. Still bitter about not getting a team.

  19. Team Trump: I can’t be indicted because I have national security issues to worry about

Also Team Trump: I have to make national anthem protests my top priority

  20. The thing is, ESPN never broadcast the National Anthem on Monday Night Football. This policy is nothing new. They broadcast it 3 times last year because it was news in response to Trump’s tweets. Other than that, they never broadcast it. This was just the first time it was mentioned in a release.

  21. Are there any other treasonous cowardly crooks, besides Donald Trump, complaining about the NFL anthem brouhaha?

Would it be a brouhaha if not for our treasonous cowardly crook of a president?

Yep I miss the good old days when our President would rip our country and apologize for it rather than tell us how great it is all the time. Then watch the media fall all over themselves like little girls. That was great.

  23. Maybe Trump should worry about himself getting impeached and his inner circle going to prison instead of players using their platform to protest police brutality.

  24. Up until Trump caused such a stir about who was standing and who was kneeling, they never even televised the anthem except for when it was a big event like a Super Bowl or all star game. The only really they televised is back then was to show the big artist that was singing, not for the anthem itself. Then after the president made it a big deal about the standing issue, networks started showing it because it became news and people just had to see who was and wasn’t standing. Viewers at home weren’t watching to stand at attention, but only so they could throw stones at the athletes who weren’t. They started watching for purely gossipy reasons. It was like apolitical version of tmz. ———- bottom line, if you are so offended, then stop complaining and boycott, put your money where your mouth is. Maybe it’s time for all you people crying about who is standing fir the anthem to stand up for something your damn selves and stop watching. If something bothered me do much, then I’d cut it out if my life.

  25. I know I am asking the impossible but if the Press would ignore Trump on these issues that have nothing to do with his Presidential responsibilities, he would stop doing this.

  26. Stop trying to distract and divide the country and do the job that the minority of this country elected you to do. Jeez, what a tool he is.

  27. Before the protests started happening on a regular basis, the networks always cut to commercial during the anthem. This is just going back to the way it used to be.

  28. Treason, corruption, fascism, massive pollution for profit scheme and all the rest from the fake president who is a fake patriot

  29. Comrade Trump wants lock-step Stepford Citizens, capable of agreeing with his delusions and falsely stated “important” issues. His uneducated minions continue to agree with this idiot, because “they won.” That’s all that’s important to them……….oh, and the fact they believe poor people “just don’t work hard enough.”

  30. Trump, your strategy of deflection has run it’s course and is quite trite. You sir are a flag waving patriot when it serves your agenda, but not when it comes to proving it, like during the Viet Nam war (which my father volunteered to join the army for with the understanding he was most likely going to be sent their and was). Nor do you care enough to learn the words to the anthem you so vociferously love and defend. Mr. Trump, you are a fraud and I am now suspecting a criminal too.

  31. Trump’s a snake oil salesman. Always has been. True patriots need to see through this guy, what he truly values (himself), and get back to what Republicans use to stand for. Family values, less government, God and county and a strong military.

    P.S. I’m not a Republican.

  32. And America will continue to criticize him for breaking campaign finance laws. At least the protests are felonies.

  33. The national anthem is too military-centric. It honors the military. What about the rest of us? It could still be played at parades, military events, and political rallies.

The anthem should be America the Beautiful, for everybody, and everyone can stand, sit, kneel, squat, whatever they want. After all, this is an ALREADY great, free, country. We don’t need an orange pretender to tell us differently.

It was the main NFL story for a full year before he said a word. During the 2017 offseason this website had daily articles on Kaepernick.

  35. The criminally implicated Trump, when Microsoft informed him of new Russian hacks of the Senate and other entities in attempts to sway the midterm elections, said “it could be other people”

    yeah. that’s probably it, comrade.

This man must go. Completely corrupt and compromised by Russia.

  36. I wish Trump would worry way more about the giant mess he’s made of America than feuding with the NFL. Talk about screwed up priorities… and this topic is played out. Players are going to do whatever they believe is right for them. No one can stop them.

  38. I’m still ashamed that my wonderful state of Michigan was key to getting this egotistical clown elected, turning this great country into an embarrassment on the world stage. One positive, this experience will ELIMINATE the tea party and so-call “patriots” from serious contention for good, and throw them into the GARBAGE PILE of history where such despicables belong!!

    ROAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  39. I wish this Clown would spend as much time fixing the water situation in Flint as he does tweeting out useless jargon.

WORST PRESIDENT IN THE HISTORY OF THIS NATION.

    Absolute Joke show.

  40. Time to start distracting from Mueller convicting Manfort and that Russian collusion has been proven in a court of law. Impeachment is near, and he knows it.

  41. I think Chump has bigger things to worry about besides this fake posturing over “love for America”. Imagine, their hero is a 3 time draft dodger leading the charge over this “Love it or leave it” nonsense. All it takes for some dim witted souls is him hugging a flag and claiming anyone who disagrees with him hates America, loves MS-13 and wants to destroy all that is “great” about this country. It’s a broken record now, and it only works on the most bitter and lost of souls. Angry, stupid people who may never be saved, they will take their hate to the grave and wonder on their dying day “what happened to their great nation”. It’s laughable, were it not so pathetic and sad.

  42. And trump is president? Look in the mirror and take care of your own personal problems. This is minor!

  43. I will always believe that Kaep started this whole thing sitting on the bench during the anthem – not for some bigger cause but pouting because of his lack of playing time.

  44. Is this one big Sasha Baron Cohen prank with Trump?!
Sure looks like a very similar style of movie to Borat

  45. I’m pro Trump….well, more than anything I was anti-Hillary…..however, I want to watch football for the LOVE OF FOOTBALL. So while I agree that we are the greatest country in the world and that the flag needs to be respected, etc, etc, I am DOG TIRED of this controversy and TIRED of politics & protests invading my safe space…that safe space being the joy of watching the sport I grew up loving. So if ESPN’s answer is to just ignore it by not showing the anthem, then I’m fine with it…just don’t be hypocrites about it and then show replays of the kneeling players on your other segments. If you’re going to ignore it, then ignore it….and if that’s the case, then I’m for it…doesn’t make me unpatriotic…if I’m AT THE GAME, then I’m standing, my hat over my chest, and I’ll be singing the words. Enough is enough and LET’S PLAY FOOTBALL!!!!!

  46. I stand by my previous comments about Trump’s bitterness of never becoming an NFL owner. He doesn’t care about the National Anthem or the flag; he only wants to bash the NFL any chance he gets. It’s mind-boggling people continue to enable his unpresidential behavior.

  47. Other than the Super Bowl, I have NEVER seen/heard the anthem on a televised football game. I tune in to watch football, not the anthem. Do people really tune in to watch/hear the anthem?

  48. Liberalsruineverything says:
“..Yep I miss the good old days when our President would rip our country and apologize for it rather than tell us how great it is all the time…”

Uh, Trump ran his entire campaign saying America isn’t great.

  49. Sorry Mr. President. I gotta go against you on this one. The anthem was never shown before, this is simply a return to the status quo as it ws before any of this started. You got your victory, why not just take it and walk away? If you keep pushing then it is now you who is using the anthem as a point of contention just as much as the kneelers I was so against. Please, everyone just drop it already.

  50. Calling an investigation that is getting convictions and plea deals left and right ‘a witch hunt’ is idiotic. Its like Nixon as a facist with a cult following… Sad!

The collusion was ordered on national TV, but hey… there’s a hole to stick our heads in right here!

They should remake The Untouchables but give Al Capone access to twitter.

  51. Play the anthem ONLY at events involving teams representing the USA in national and international events. Problem solved. You stand then because you chose to wear the uniform.

  52. The ignorance of his base insures they are easily distracted, then convinced that facts are false.

Yes, he’s an embarrassment, but the bigger disappointment is the 40% of the country that believe everything he says.

  53. “The rest of you don’t risk your life to keep the people free.”

Yeah, as the alleged commander of the Princeton ROTC you’re really putting your life at risk.

Never been in battle = Your life not being at risk.

  54. “The rest of you don’t risk your life to keep the people free”.

Free includes the people’s freedom to protest at any time they like, including during the anthem.

  55. Think you have a lot bigger things to be worried about Don. I’m sure everybody around him was corrupt, but this good guy just was an innocent bystander, lol. Especially the way he talks when people are looking at him, I’m sure he had no idea he was surrounded by criminals. You betcha. Everyone always brings up Nixon as his parallel, but Warren G. Harding’s corruption comes to mind. He’s obliterated his Presidency as the gold standard of criminality.

  56. “President Trump tried to change the subject by going back to one of his favorite topics: The national anthem played before NFL games.”

Annnnd the entire truth not posted is that he spoke of 100 different things as well. This rally, like all rallys, was planned well in advance. He spoke on a lot of issues, many of them more interesting and important than the anthem vs the NFL.

  57. Trump bringing this up today with everything else going on around him is the equivalent to someone’s house burning down while they are more concerned about a dog peeing on their lawn.

  58. You don’t like it Trump because then you don’t have any AMMO to use to fire up your base about an issue that you made into something it isn’t. Darn, the shame of that.

    Maga… Mueller Aint Going Away.

  59. All these losers are really worked up this morning.
    — You can’t indict a sitting President
    — To impeach a President you need a majority in the House and 67 votes in the Senate
Keep dreaming snowflakes and we’ll keep laughing at you.

  60. Maybe if Trump demanded that NFL leadership be replaced with great people, the best people, then this problem would go away. Oh I don’t know, replace Goodell with Michael Cohen or Paul Manafort. Those guys are great right?

  61. Trump, again living rent free in the minds of all triggered snowflakes. You more you scream the happier I get.

  63. I get a good laugh out of the snowflakes counting on Trump getting impeached. Keep dreaming….and get ready for another 6 years

  64. His fans are cute though. Cool that you people think handing out pardons for criminals is funny or that this scum being President due to one of our most hostile enemies being in bed with him is either. It’s vomit inducing.

  65. It won’t really get entertaining until Trump is tweeting about the NFL and the anthem from his prison cell.

  66. This is CLASSIC DEFLECTION people!!!
    SMOKE & MIRRORS…..BATE & SWITCH….
Keep the brain dead focused on the ANTHEM & away from the TRULY CRIMINAL & MORALLY DISPICABLE ACTIONS that are much more important in the world…
TRUMP still thinks he’s sitting at the head of the table on THE APPRENTICE…….
He was a buffoon there & is an even BIGGER ONE NOW…..& I didn’t think that was even possible!!

  67. The national anthem has no place in football or any other sport! Go to a rodeo or watch nascar if you want the anthem.

  68. Yeah, because these hypocritical mouthbreather’s are definitely not standing and saluting the flag when it’s played and they’re criticizing the kneeling players.

  69. Maybe he should be working his lies, so he can keep them straight when he gets interviewed. Why else would he be worried about perjury, if it isn’t because he fears keeping his lies straight?

Yet, his sheep still follow him like a cult.

    ——-

please allow me to correct you.

At the federal level, Article I, Section 2, Clause 5 of the Constitution grants to the House of Representatives “the sole power of impeachment”, and Article I, Section 3, Clause 6 grants to the Senate “the sole Power to try all Impeachments”.

Impeachment is a process that involves formal charges, which the House can and would do alone (it is analogous to indictment by grand jury). Once impeached, the Senate would hold a trial and decide whether or not to convict on the charges.

Its actually bad. It means all this investigation has amounted to nothing more than bagging a couple smaller potatoes rather than the real target. They would not have convicted one and accepted a plea that did not involve turning any evidence from the other unless they were against a wall where its be ome clear to them that this is all they can get for all that digging. But on the other hand a Trump supporter is going to feel pretty good about it.

His long time personal lawyer implicated him after being threatened with decades of prison time. As the judge in the Manafort matter said recently, “This vernacular is to ‘sing,’ is what prosecutors use. What you got to be careful of is, they may not only sing, they may compose.”

  80. actually, God bless ESPN because they gave us a chance not to obsess about it. Many in my community get angry with them when I say the NFL picked up the anthem on broadcasts in 2009 and think that I’m not a true American. you should read the plea documents. he also implicated a number of other people in this scheme. I don’t know where this ends, but when all is said and done, there could be several witnesses that back his story.

  83. Yeah, the networks started telecasting the anthem for longer air time so they can sell more commercials. We’ll be right back after this message from our sponsor.

I feel your pain. Wisconsin here … and a traditionally Republican voter at that. Only this time, I couldn’t hold my nose and vote for the sitting POTUS. Problem is that MOST voters have NO idea who they’re voting for. You’ve got to get past the campaign advertising – particularly those that tell you to “Call {insert name here} and tell {insert name here} to … ” If it’s a political ad … assume it’s lying. BOTH SIDES. You can’t vote for a used appliance just because it has an “R” or “D” after it’s name.

Folks, most of you are probably younger than I am. I only say that because I remember the FIRST time the POTUS hit my radar circa 1978. I remember commenting to my father as we watched the news “Pops, THAT is a grease ball”. In 2016, I commented to the CEO where I work “That man gets elected, we’d have our very own Republican “Jimmy Carter”. …and here we are…only worse.

I just want to say that even though POTUS doesn’t respect the office he swore to uphold we do need to respect the office even though it involves probably the most corrupt Administration since the Grant Administration. Understand that this POTUS will NOT be impeached. This is our Great National punishment for not being informed voters.
