T.J. Watt doesn’t think he needs preseason game time

Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt finally feels good again, but he doesn’t feel like he needs to play in a preseason game to be ready.

Via Joe Rutter of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Watt practiced yesterday for the first time since a hamstring strain early in training camp, which has kept him out of all their preseason games.

And as more and more teams are playing fewer and fewer actual players in these games, Watt downplayed the need to take a snap against another team before doing it in the regular season opener against the Browns.

“We practice so hard here on the South Side that it really doesn’t matter for me,” Watt said. “We’re going up against one of the best offensive lines in the NFL, so I don’t feel like I need game time, but I’ll never turn down game time if I’m allowed.”

Of course, it’s unlikely he’ll be allowed at this point, adding to the trend of teams treating these games as something akin to a glorified scrimmage for their backups (at full price for the fans, however).

  1. Cancel 2 pre season games(also increase practice time in pads allowed), but do not let them use this as the ploy to adding 2 regular season games. It will be tried and we must revolt and stop it once again.

16 games is perfection. Adding 2 more starts to lessen the importance of every game and this is one main reason why this league is #1 in sports. EVERY GAME HAS GREAT IMPORTANCE. This isn’t the NBA or MLB thank god.

  2. “At full price for the fans”. First of all, preseason tickets are cheaper than regular season. Second, why risk injury to a starter, causing him to miss regular season games which 1) actually count for something and 2) are full price for the fans.

  3. You need an asterisk with the “at full price to fans” line for the most part. My season tickets, like many now a days, are at variable pricing. They are less than half the price of the “standard” regular season games.
You just saying 10 games at $1200 per seat for the season = $120 per game doesn’t equate anymore.

  4. The NFL should go to a two game pre-season schedule.

They could add in a pre-season week 1 passing scrimmage or controlled scrimmage.
If they treated that like hard knocks and did a little pay-per-view I think people would
pay a minimal charge to get on the field/mic’d up access to their favorite team.

  5. That’s funny…entering the playoffs last year, every team that rested their starters lost the first game they played…Steelers included! Even the Eagles played their starters for a half…what a lazy dude…jj should be ashamed of his brother…

!st off, what is this “we” crap? How and when did we revolt? What gives you the right to deem 16 games as perfection? How would a mere 2 games lessen the importance as compared to 16? Soccer is the #1 sport in the world {I’m not a fan but I mention it because EVERYTHING you have said is incorrect} Last but not least, leave God, Capital G out of it, He’s a Patriots fan, obviously.

  7. You really think playing a few snaps in the last preseason game is going to make the difference to a team or individual 17 weeks later in the playoffs?

They tried to push a 18 game schedule through a few years ago and one of the reasons it didn’t happen is that fans were against it. You are clueless if you don’t know this.

The ONLY reason the NFL and the owners want to go to a 18 game schedule is money. Each owner would make a extra 31 million if a 18 game schedule is implemented. Yes that is the money they would make with also cancelling 2 pre season games.

You are as ignorant as they come if you think increasing games does not lessen the importance of each game some. It is a ridiculous statement to make by you who wrongly claims you know “everything” It is so obvious you are really a dense soccer fan.

  9. TJ Watt needs all the live game reps he can get before the season starts. Until Watt proves himself though & becomes a top-tier pass rusher jn the NFL it’s best he keep his head down and his mouth shut.
