49ers announce 12 cuts, including Joe Williams, Aldrick Robinson

The 49ers announced 12 roster moves Friday, including the previously reported departures of running back Joe Williams and receiver Aldrick Robinson.

San Francisco made Williams a fourth-round pick last year, but he spent his rookie season on injured reserve with a foot injury. Robinson, a five-year veteran, appeared in all 16 games for the 49ers last season and made 19 catches for 260 yards and two touchdowns.

The 49ers also cut: offensive lineman JP Flynn, running back Ja’Quan Gardner, offensive guard Chris Gonzalez, quarterback Jack Heneghan, defensive lineman Chris Jones, punter Jeff Locke, offensive tackle Pace Murphy, tight end Wes Saxton and offensive lineman Darrell Williams.

  1. John Lynch could not stop crowing when he drafted Joe Williams. He was going to draft him rounds earlier and the draft would have been a failure if he didn’t come away with Williams. I don’t normally give a hoot when a draft pick is a bust because it’s too easy to miss on a player but Lynch laid it on a little too think on draft day and hardly mentioned all those red flags that Williams had.

    The 49ers had Williams off the board altogether. It was Shanahan that talked Lynch into putting him back on. Shanahan liked him a lot but Willams never had the stuff between the ears to make it in the NFL. Even after redshirting him and giving him a second chance he failed to put out pro level effort. Hope he finds happiness in whatever he does end up pursuing.

  3. People who are cut today may later end up on the practice squad. Teams have to make tough decisions, attempting to guess which players they want on the practice squad would likely not clear waivers.

  4. Joe Williams seems to have lost his sense of urgency from last year to this. Every play counts in the big boy league.
    I thought a couple of decent WR’s were going to be cut and one ended up being Aldrick. He’ll probably find work somewhere in the league.

  5. John Lynch did not have Williams on the niners draft board. Shanahan is the one who wanted Williams and convinced Lynch to draft him. Williams didn’t perform so now he’s gone. Who cares, sometimes you miss. Seems to me Lynch and Shanahan have a lot more hits than misses.

  7. Robinson is a surprise cut to me. He was dropping balls early last season but he improved a lot in the second half. Guess they got a lot more talent at WR this season than last.
