Paxton Lynch failure a reminder that Jerry Jones lucked into Dak Prescott

Broncos quarterback Paxton Lynch is officially a draft bust with today’s decision to cut him. Broncos General Manager John Elway will rightly take criticism for drafting Lynch in the first round. But Elway wasn’t the only NFL decision-maker who loved Lynch.

Cowboys owner and General Manager Jerry Jones also wanted Lynch, wanted him badly enough that he tried to trade up into the first round to get him, only to be out-maneuvered by Elway.

Jones said after the first round of the 2016 draft ended that he had been working hard to move up and get Lynch, but before he could get a deal done, the Broncos moved up to the 26th overall pick and took Lynch themselves. Jones even acknowledged that he was willing to overpay to acquire Lynch, and said his son Stephen Jones had to prevent him from selling the farm to get Lynch.

As it turned out, the Cowboys took a much better quarterback, Dak Prescott, in the fourth round of the draft. If Jones had succeeded in moving up for Lynch, Prescott would be some other team’s quarterback today.

Lynch will now be available to any team that wants him. We’ll see whether Jones brings him to Dallas as Prescott’s backup.

  1. Dak had a phenomenal first season and an atrocious second season. I dont think the story is written yet on Jerry lucking into him. Heck Paxton Lynch may have had a very good season behind the run game with Zeke and that Oline.

  2. As I recall, Jones also really wanted to draft Johnny Manziel. Unfortunately his son talked him out of it.

  3. Here’s the problem for Dallas though. Prescott is nothing more than a backup in the league. He is not a starter for a team serious about contending.

  4. But, why would Dallas sign him. It wasn’t that long ago, when Cowboys fans were saying that Cooper Rush was a great backup, and could possibly be a starter, as a result of Jerruh’s supreme knowledge of undrafted free agents.

  5. The Cowboys tried to get both Paxton Lynch and Connor Cook before landing on Dak Prescott.

To be fair, it is way too early for this hindsight argument anyway. Seven quarterbacks were drafted before Dak so every single team in the NFL had multiple opportunities. He was drafted in the fourth round because he was seen as a fourth round talent. Same with Lynch being drafted in the first round. You win some, you lose some.

  6. Well # !) I’d rather be lucky than good, any day of the week and 2 ) After the abysmal performance of our 2 backup q/bs during the preseason, Lynch could not do any worse!!! Rush had regressed so badly from last preseason, that I did not even recognize him! Can you say “coaching” ? White, as a rookie, did better, but now he will be “coached”!! With Kellen Moore, a q/b from our PS, as our new q/b coach, I am not the least optimistic, and he is one of Linehan’s “guys”, our illustrious OC 🙁 Patty Cake & Co. feel we are just fine…..smh If Dak goes down, it will be 2015 all over again! A 4-12 season, where they could not coach up 3 different q/bs (Moore included) to win more than 1 game…..

  7. Correction: If Jones had had his way and drafted Lynch, Prescott would be some other team’s backup.

  8. These stories are always strange because they don’t account for coaching.

Would Dak Prescott have received the same tutelage under the Broncos coaching staff? Like a top comment said, Elway has missed on three qbs.

    Can Elway develop a qb?

  9. It’s a reminder that players shouldn’t be evaluated in a vacuum. Coming into an offense with the one of the top OLs in football, with Zeke Elliott, and with a core of talented receivers makes a difference. Not to say that Paxton didn’t have anything around him – but Prescott came into a situation that allowed him to thrive. It’s not all on him.

It’s always hilarious when people like you try to be funny by busting on Jerruh’s team but never say who their team is why is that ?

  11. Dak has had 2 seasons in the league in which he regressed in year 2. RG3 was better than Luck statistics wise in their rookie season of 2012. Give Dak a few more years to determine how much better he is than Lynch. Lynch has proven he can even reach the field, but don’t forget how poor the Broncos have been since their 2015 Championship.

  12. Maybe this was Denver’s failure.. look how long they kept Osweiler and then were going to make him the starter til he jumped to pathetic Houston

  13. NFL is horrible at Drafting QB’s…while hardly the first, the passing over of DeShaun Watson was a stark reminder that they use different criteria than being really good at football.

  14. To tdubdizzle: you are correct. The onus here is on Elway, he and his coaching staffs have not developed any quarterback including Tebow

  15. If there is anyone Jerry lucked into it was Jimmy Johnson. If Jimmy Johnson had not been the coach back in the 90’s Jerry would have no Super Bowl wins. And the Cowboys last Super Bowl would of been in 1978.

If Jimmy Johnson had not been fired the Cowboys probably would of won 2-4 more Super Bowls.

  16. It’s just another reminder that the draft is a total crapshoot. There’s so many variables involved in determining whether a prospect pans out or not in the NFL.

  17. Let’s just slow down a little here. What if New England drafted Paxton Lynch. He might be a pro bowler by now. I think the only thing we all can agree on is that Denver is not a good environment for QB’s. They’ve changed coaches, coordinators, QB’s so often, it’s almost impossible for any young QB to succeed. The only QB that’s had a lot of success since Elway has been in charge, is the guy who was already a first ballot HOFer before he got there. He’s the only QB who ignored everything Elway and the others told him. I think Paxton Lynch has a great NFL career in front of him. How many times did Kurt Warner get cut before he was given a chance? And his chance only came about because the other QB got injured at the last second and they didn’t have enough time to bring in somebody else. Wasn’t Brett Favre a bust too, before he got shipped off to Green Bay? And what about that old Tampa Bay bust, Steve Young. He finally got some coaching in S.F. and turned into a first ballot QB. I’ve seen this movie too many times, and I know the ending.

  18. Think his career ended that game against the Raiders where he was crying on the bench or something. By the way, the Chiefs and Andy Reid tried to trade up for him too, so Jerry wasn’t alone on this one. Why, I still can’t figure that one because he just never looked like an NFL QB to me when he was at Memphis.

He is a Philthy fan. He still doesn’t get it that the Cowboys have 5 Lombardi’s and his team has one (that they won’t defend this season). Secretly, however, he is a closet Cowboy fan – EVERY Cowboys post he chimes in. He just can’t help himself.

If accounting for 28 tds and 13 turnovers is atrocious you must be a complete fool or just a hater. He also went 9-7 while playing without Zeke and the best Left tackle in the game for a good part of the season. Same players you just assume made him great year 1.
Funny how John Elway actually made the mistake with trading up for Lynch but yet Jerry gets mentioned more like he screwed up. Elway continues to fail when it comes to accessing QBs

I wouldn’t call a 9-7 season with 22 TDs to 13 Int’s and a QB rating of 86.6 “atrocious”. Let’s not forget he was a 4th rd pick who had a great rookie season. The O-line play was much worse in 2017 as a whole, the loss of Zeke and all the distractions didn’t help, and after the Atlanta game, Prescott simply was rattled. Chaz Green is FINALLY gone, and the O-line will be improved this year as long as Tyron Smith can stay healthy. If Frederick comes back this year, it will be a bonus.

  22. NFL draft is a crap shot—certain players just seem to develop in certain systems and with certain coaching…for every Aaron Donald there are many Danny Sheltons for every Jalen Ramsey there are many Eli Apples…….and many so called experts are wrong over and over

  23. @700levelvet,

“But, why would Dallas sign him. It wasn’t that long ago, when Cowboys fans were saying that Cooper Rush was a great backup, and could possibly be a starter, as a result of Jerruh’s supreme knowledge of undrafted free agents.”

Meanwhile, Cooper rush AND Mike White had a better preseason QB rating than Foles this preseason.

But you stay classy. Let’s touch base when Philthy fails to defend its crown this year, and shows how much of a fluke they really were.

  24. Also, people can say this all they want, but I remember just as vividly that all through the pre-draft process that the Cowboys loved Prescott. I think I’ve been more surprised that he’s even been a decent QB in the league, let alone as well as he played at times during his rookie year. I didn’t think he was accurate enough coming out, but he’s been okay.

  25. Jerry wanted Manziel badly too a few years ago and had to be talked out of trading back into the 1st round to draft him.

It’s always a hard thing for the children of the elderly to do but Jerry’s kids (no Labor Day pun intended) must recognize their dad is senile and it’s time to start looking for a nice retirement home and hire a REAL GM for the Cowboys.

  26. Cowboys seem to have a lot of “luck” on draft day, having drafted the most pro bowl players than any other team in the past decade+.
Call it what you want, we’ll take it. Zack Martin over Manziel, Prescott over Lynch, Elliott over Ramsey, Jaylon over Garrett… Theres a reason other teams covet Will McClay, and jerry very recently the NFL executive of the year.

  27. @700levelvet says:

“Sounds good…. This will give you time to make up some more excuses.”

So go ahead and make your proclamation now guaranteeing that Philthy repeats. I won’t make excuses. If Philthy repeats, I will be the first to congratulate you. What are you prepared to do/say when they don’t repeat?

  28. Jerruh! Jerruh! Jerruh! LOL, can you imagine the conversation with him trying to pulla Ditka and trade his entire draft away so he could take Paxton Lynch

  29. Before the draft, anyone who saw his bowl game against Auburn could tell he couldn’t play. I remember watching the game and thinking why would any team want to draft this kid. He was so over hyped in college and that game would tell you what kind of player he was going to be.

  30. Is having Prescott what you call luck ? In that case the german’s were lucky having the Hindenburg

In every post you made there was an excuse attached as to why the Cowboys were bad. So as I see it you’re the only excuse maker. Cowboys won’t win anything as long as Jerry plays GM and keeps his yes man as coach

  32. I wouldn’t be saying that just yet. Prescott was garbage last year, only no one in the media noticed it. If he doesn’t improve this year, it might be the hook for him too.

  33. Out-Maneuvered??? Really. Cowboys media bias. Is it really out-maneuvering to not want to give up what Elway gave up to get him? Cowboys didn’t want to give up way too much (first and third). 3rd rounders are starters or valuable team depth. Turned out the Cowboys out-maneuvered Elway doesn’t it Michael David Smith???

  34. This and Manziel are why Jerry Jones needs to stay out of it and let others do the picks.

  35. With Jerry as GM and Prescott at QB the Cowboys are at best stuck at 8-8 for years to come.

  36. He is a Philthy fan. He still doesn’t get it that the Cowboys have 5 Lombardi’s and his team has one (that they won’t defend this season)

How many decades to u have to roll back to talk bout the Boys SB’s? LOL… that’s funny. Thank ur ass for J Johnson or u’d have even less to whine about. I love Jerrah, keeping yall irrelevant for 20 yrs. Fly Eagles Fly losers!!

  37. Theres a reason other teams covet Will McClay, and jerry very recently the NFL executive of the year

He bought that award, everybody knows it and is laughing except the dimmest of the cow patties fans

  38. Does player development and coaching play any role in your analysis? In a different organization Lynch might well have played considerably better.

The offensive scheme matters too. Switch a guy into a different scheme and sometimes he become a different player.

  40. 1) Lombardi trophies don’t have an expiration date, so just like philly will always have at least their one in the trophy case, so shall Dallas have their 5, and if I have 5 houses I bought over the course of time from 1960 to today and you just bought your first home I still have more houses than you.
    2) the cowboys never wanted to draft manziel despite the fun story, just ask mike fisher
3)If you want to rip on Jerry for his near misses, you also can’t discount his successes. He hired Jimmy Johnson, not the other way around. The owner of a company/team gets credit for successes and failures. I can’t say “yeah jeff is the owner of the eagles, but that trophy is doug’s” it doesn’t work that way.

  41. I still cannot figure out why all the hate for Dak, especially by one clown who claims he states “the truth”, Dak is 22 wins and 10 loses as a 2 year starter in the NFL, that is a very good record!

If the Boys had any defense 2 years ago they would have defeated Green Bay in the playoffs when Dak lead the Boys to a big comeback after the Packers jumped out to a big lead and if Zeke was not suspended for 6 games last season he would have been in the playoffs again.

Meanwhile why all the love for Jimmy G?, what the heck has he proven?, he has started a total of 7 games in the NFL and some media morons and fans are proclaiming him the next G.O.A.T. which is a big joke, plus he is making 27 million per year for 7 career starts which is even a bigger joke.

If you look at the 2016 NFL Draft, the only q.b’s that were drafted ahead of Dak that are worth mentioning are Goff and Wentz, then there is Lynch, Hackenburg, Brisset, Kessler & Cook don’t have 22 wins combined so chew on that haters! remember this the next time you want to hate on Rayne Dakota Prescott aka Dak.

  42. Too early to say it is official. Jim Plunkett was a failure in New England and San Francisco, for example, but he got a chance in Oakland and won 2 Super Bowls.

  43. It was clear that Dallas offense runs through Elliott, not Dak. Without Elliott, Dak was a like a lost puppy. He has been captain check down.

  44. Dak was on the Cowboys radar all along, and it was a pretty sweet bbonus that they got him in the 4th round.

I don’t know why it is considered that Dallas “lucked” into getting Dak. Yes, Lynch was also on their radar, but the Broncos and Elway thought more highly of Lynch, and the rest is history. 134 picks went by with teams passing on Dak, and Dallas decided to take him in the 4th rd at 135 (after taking Tapper with the 1st of their two 4th rd picks). And by the way, with Denver taking Lynch at 26th overall, it allowed Dallas to take Jaylon Smith early in round 2 – that is is looking pretty good right now.

In addition, Garrett coached Prescott in the senior bowl (where Dak was selected for most outstanding player), and the Cowboys had Prescott in for a private visit before the draft. They wanted Prescott early on, and they got their guy at a pretty steep bargain.

  45. I’ll be surprised if Lynch lands anywhere this season. Rosters are set and he’s just not an NFL quality QB. The rumors about him in Denver were he’s too dumb to learn a playbook and is arrogant beyond belief. He believed his “superior athletic skill” would carry him in the NFL, but he clearly didn’t realize that all NFL players have the same superior athletic skill and that the little details matter. In other words, he’s the white JaMarcus Russell.
