Patriots sign Corey Coleman

Getty Images

Corey Coleman is getting his third chance in the NFL.

The Patriots are signing Coleman, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.

A star wide receiver at Baylor, Coleman went to the Browns with the 15th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft. But he didn’t do much in Cleveland, catching 56 passes for 718 yards and five touchdowns in two seasons. The Browns traded him (and his guaranteed salary) to the Bills this offseason, but he didn’t make Buffalo’s roster.

Now Coleman heads to the Patriots, where he’ll play with a much better quarterback than he’s ever played with before. Perhaps he can finally get some production out of his talent.

  3. Minimum salary. Has talent. Also potential STer. Hardly any risk, very high reward. Hard to say how long he will stick around but there’s really no downside to this move whatsoever.

    Like it! 🙂

  4. The crybabies will make a big deal out of it as they ALWAYS do

He’s brought in for a 1 year deal for depth that all
If it doesn’t work out then they release him.

It’s really that simple, no one is saying he’s going to the HOF.

Of course there aren’t any Julio Jones caliber receivers available to teams at this time of year. Sometimes chances like this can and do pay off. 🙂

  6. I hate the Pats, but why bash them for this. A low cost no risk move for a kid with talent that hasn’t put it together yet. He probably won’t, but so what.

If it works out, BB is a genius. If it doesn’t, Coleman is cut once again. Heck, even if he is just so-so, it cost nothing.

On the other hand, my Bills gave up something tangible for hope. And once again got burned.

There’s no denying that the guy has talent. Can he put it all together and become a successful WR, who knows? However, as Belichick always says after acquiring a new player, ” We’ll get him into camp and see how it goes.”

Philip Dorsett was once on the scrap heap but came up big in the Patriots opener.

Nah. 🙂 Bill isn’t the only coach at the NFL level who would take a chance on a guy like this. It’s all about finding depth and what’s out there this time of year. Any coach worth their salt would have done the same thing. ASk the current champs the Eagles, who also wanted this guy. Not sure why anyone should have a problem with it.

  32. BB will make him just good enough to get a lesser team to trade draft picks for him. He does it over and over and over.

  33. “But no, they have to go after these “talented” yet wholly unproductive and unmotivated WRs.”

They go after who’s available at any given time who fits in the salary cap model.

Belichick constantly churns the bottom 5 roster spots. This guy may last 2 days, 2 weeks, 2 months or 2 years depending on how hard he works / plays and who else becomes available in the next couple weeks.

  34. It’s ok Corey…if you drop the ball it will still be a catch in Foxboro. See Gronks highlights vs the Texans.

  35. Can he catch a punt?

The most surprising thing about the Jets game last night wasn’t the respective QB play. It was the punting game. Not just the TD but the field position won the Jets the game because they were always pressuring the Lions and never felt pressured themselves.

  37. He was cut on September 1st which means every team had a chance to sign this guy and didn’t. He was drafted #15 and was given a four-year contract for $11.654M of which $6.675M was a signing bonus. So far his production hasn’t warranted neither his draft position nor his salary. Maybe the light will come on now that he was cut. However, his salaries for 2018 and 2019 appear to have been guaranteed so he’s getting $3.5M from the Bills for those years. My guess is he signed for the league minimum. That might wake him up or it might not.

  40. There literally isn’t a single player available who hasn’t been passed on by another team at least once this season. So as far as Week 2 signings go, this is a pretty good one. He’s still not even three seasons removed from being the 15th overall pick.

Having seen close up how much of a poor coach Hue Jackson is (really – compare him to every other coach on Hard Knocks and it’s amazing he has a job), and seeing how awesome Buffalo’s brain trust is, you gotta give Coleman a better than even chance of having a decent run under Belichick and McDaniel, with Brady throwing the ball.

You’d rather overpay for Amendola (who I don’t blame for cashing in, he deserves it) who was only sporadically productive and injury prone and who signed before the Edelman suspension? And they did give Decker a shot and he just didn’t have it anymore. I’d rather do what Belichick did and give a little more cash to Brady and Gronk and then go out and find a cheap talented WR with something to prove. One of them is bound to stick and there’s very little risk capwise. Ben Fowler was just signed today as well.

  46. Cheap money, they will kick the tires to see if it is a worthwhile proposition, if so they get a talented WR for next to nothing. I think he has a very small window of opportunity.

    Corey walks into Billy’s office:
“If you ain’t gonna play me, just trade me.”

Bill pulls his hood over his head, and puts his hands is booby grabbing position. Lightning bolts come from his fingers, hitting Corey in the chest. Coleman screams in agony as he begins to accept the dark side of the force. He then hands the Browns and the Bills playbooks to Bill, bends the knee, and becomes the next flash in the pan WR that gets traded for a 3rd round pick next season.

  55. At this point, why does anyone question anything that Belichick does? Obviously not every move he makes works out, but his results are a lot better than average. Besides, you can’t tell anything about a player that was previously with the Browns and the Bills.

The whole point of getting someone that is talented for not much money is it is basically very little risk if it doesn’t work out. So yeah, maybe he is a dud, but the Patriots have made lemonade out of lemons before and they have ended up with plain lemons also. You never know unless you try.

  61. Just send him deep every play. He has the speed to clear the underneath routes even if he never catches a single pass. McDaniels will have a field day with his bunch formations.

  62. Somewhere Dez Bryant is losing it. The kid who got traded after having a temper tantrum because he got benched for dropping passes then got cut by a team with 0 recieveing talent got picked over him.

At worse he takes Kenny Britts spot as guy who washes everyones shoulder pads and doesn’t dress for the game.

  63. Cant earn a roster spot but can buy 1000 pairs if sneakers lol.

You have to look for decision making skills. They are underrated and give you a glimpse into someone’s future.

Blowing money on 1000 sneakers on your rookie deal when u can’t get on the field is not the key to long term financial success. Shows he doesn’t plan for the future or take pride in his craft.

Hope he proves me wrong, but…prolly wont.

  64. Not good enough for the Bills but good enough for the Pats. Hmmm…think about that for a minute Bean & McDermott

  65. Why are we going to reach 100+ comments related to the Pats signing of a WR who, as anyone who knows football and the Patriots recognizes, might be released before I post this message? Hell, the odds of him being released before this week’s game might be better than a coin toss. Yet, 100+ posts is possible?

I guess that is the New England Patriots, the Greatest Dynasty of All-Time, and the gift that keeps on giving to football message boards everywhere.

  66. He may be a bust and offer nothing to the Patriots. But you know what’s great about being a fan of this team? It’s that you know there’s no downside to taking a chance. Because Belichick will not let him poison his locker room like most coaches would.

I hate “potential” guys like Coleman who get chance after chance.
I want to see Coleman fall flat on his face in NE so we never hear about him again.
I’d much rather see reliable WRs like Amendola and Decker get signed.
But no, they have to go after these “talented” yet wholly unproductive and unmotivated WRs.
    ——
You’d rather have guys like Welker, Amendola, Decker, Hogan, Edelman, Reilly, as opposed to these other “unmotivated” guys Hmm.
    Shocking, from a Boston fan.

  70. He then hands the Browns and the Bills playbooks to Bill,
    ****************************

Are there really fans out there that think that BB needs to bring a player in to get their previous teams playbook? Really? With all of his experience in the NFL, the success he’s had, and the level of detail he attends to, do you folks really believe that he needs help from a scrub that can’t make a team to get info on that team?

I’m pretty sure he gets all of the info he needs from watching film.

He made a key play to beat the Jags and make the Super Bowl. Quality over quantity.

  74. Does anyone think that there is a big difference between Brendan Cooks, Phillip Dorsett and this guy? They all have about the same measurable – the rest comes down to effort and coaching which NE can control.

And if doesn’t work out, they cut him and bring in the next guy.

  75. So much misinformation in this thread.
Cleveland didn’t cut Coleman for effort. They didn’t cut him at all.
Cleveland traded him because they want to start fresh and clear their books of 1st round draft choice contracts. Buffalo cut him.
The main reason Coleman only started 18 games in two seasons is because he broke his hand twice, in September of 2016 and 2017. He spent 6-8 weeks recovering from each fracture and it cost him many games. When he was able to get back in the lineup enough to lead Cleveland WR’s in catches and yards between ’16 and’17.
Will he succeed with NE? Who knows? I think he might however.

  76. Over a hundred hits on this….. LOL…..

  78. The BB guide to bargain hunting the “Flea Market” :

    1) Know you are shopping in a place that sells everything everyone else didn’t want.
    2) It is really cheap, so you can take a chance
    3) There is no “warranty” , so if you buy something broken , so what!!, you got it for practically nothing.
    4) Every now then you get lucky, and hit it big.

So Nay Sayers, keep on Nay Saying, odds are you will be right… I’m betting you’re not.
Injury History, First round talent, losing teams who don’t have time to wait for a player to development and get him loose…

    This move has no downside.

  79. WHY? OH that’s right because it’s Belichick and he loves taking other teams 2nd/3rd string WRs and RBs(or ones they cut) and going to the playoffs with them, he’s made a career out of doing it!

Love BB or hate him is there any HC in the history of the NFL that’s ever done more with less year in and year out?

Easy guys. The Pats soent the past year developing Dorsette to know the system. This game was his first real coming out party and by itself it doesnt mean much. He did well but there are a lit of games to go. Jury is still out there.

Brisette was benched for Luck in week one but if you saw the game you see thats not going to last long. They still dont protect that poor guy, he’s gonna get hurt again and then the Colts will be turning back to Brisette. That jury is still out too.

We are a long way from learning which side won that trade and its entirely possible it will be both.

    ========================

    Uh, more like this……

Bills give up a 7th rd draft pick to acquire Coleman – Cut him before he plays a down

Patriots pick up Coleman for the minimum while the Bills pay his guaranteed money (guaranteed salaries of $1.5 million this year and $2 million next year)

Pats fans : “LOW RISK MOVE, not bad!”

I fixed it for ya, Peaches.

  98. Dez Bryant would be a wiser choice over Coleman. Both need attitude adjustment but at least Dez can run and catch and is eager to play for the Pats since he is home alone – Colemam believes he is entitled and could not make it through training camp.
BB needs to be checked for a concussion because he keepsmaking the same mistake as well as blowing the SB.

The Patriots think they have found a diamond in the rough. I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out to be just a lump of coal.

    —————
The Patriots think nothing of the sort. They picked up a lump of dirt and are going to check and see if anything is in it. As diamonds are pretty rare the lump of coal is more likely. Everyone knows this including Belichick. And he is the short fuse type, this kid is going to get run hard by the coaches and within a few days will be the answer. If its a lump of coal they drop that fast to free the slot and check out someone else.

The guys flipping out here over the Pats even looking at a guy are terrified of them finding that diamond. You guys give yourselves away with how hard and fast you start trying to convince yourselves by posting over and over. Its a desperate man who is refuced to hoping if he says something enough it will come true. And when its something thats even probable (like in this case its probable he flunks his test and gets cut again) yet someone feels they have to desperatly start posting posting posting thats the most desperate man at all.

The Bills are basically paying him to play for the Patriots and they lost a 7th rounder. More like, “low risk move, not bad!”

  103. Reading so many of these post make me scared for our future survival……some of the most foolish comments I’ve ever seen…..
This was a NO-BRAINER move for the Patriots….. super low risk with the POSSIBILITY of HUGE UPSIDE…. the Bills gave up a 7th rounder & have to pay his garenteed salary of 3.5 million, the Pats pay NONE OF THAT…. Pats need some depth at WR & get a former first rounder for minimal cost…. NOBODY is expecting much if anything at all this season as he is just getting into the system & has a ton of catch up to do ( much like Dorsett last year)….the Pats will patiently evaluate him & look at his ability to gel in their
system & see if he’ll be a good fit or not or has the potential to be a factor next year, again just like it played out with Dorsett……if it works out, GREAT, if not no biggie at all!!!
    Go Pats!!!!
