Christopher Johnson: I had no say in Sam Darnold starting, I’m not Jerry Jones

Unlike some NFL owners, Jets acting chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson is taking a hands-off approach to the football decisions.

Johnson told reporters today that he wasn’t involved in the decision to make Sam Darnold the starting quarterback over Josh McCown.

“I took no role in that whatsoever. That’s not my strong suit. I’m not yet Jerry Jones,” Johnson said, via Bob Glauber of Newsday.

Jones is the league’s most hands-on owner, giving himself the General Manager title, although even Jones doesn’t claim to choose the starting quarterback for his team. Johnson doesn’t get that involved, but he did say that the Jets’ decision to trade up from No. 6 to No. 3 to position themselves to draft Darnold was “maybe the most important decision that the organization has made in a long time.”

  1. Johnson owns a team in the #1 media market, but can’t hold Jones’s jock when it comes to business. And make no mistake about it, NFL is business first, and Jones is the undisputed champ. Thumbs down all you want, we all know it’s true.

Here’s a little news flash for you – it’s not Jerruh Jones’ strong suit either.

  3. Just to be clear, Forbes has the Cowboys ranked $2 BILLION ahead of the Jets ($4.8B vs $$2.75 also 5th biggest market vs #1 market)…… $2 Billion!! Does Johnson really want to pick a fight with the undisputed king of professional sports business and marketing? Jones is an easy target for some, but he is light years ahead of the Johnson family when it comes to business.

  4. The Jets really need to actually get to the playoffs or something for the first time in a decade before their owner talks talking smack.

  5. I think he meant to say “I’m not Jerrah OR my brother”. Let’s not forget Woody tampered for Revis and then, AFTER being fined for the public tampering remarks he made, his guys conducted further tampering negotiations to seal the deal (ignored by Fraudger). AND THEN Woody falsely accused Kraft of counter-tampering simply because after losing Revis, Kraft merely said he wished Revis had stayed. This counter accusation by Woody was both spurious and false – and an Integrity Rules violation which again Fraudger ignored. AND YOU CAN BE SURE after splashing out all that money on Revis that Woody absolutely told his GM and coach that Revis would be starting for the team.

  6. Thats actually pretty funny, I chuckled. Not as funny, though, as the j e t s being the perinial door mat in the afc east and one of the main contributers to the patriots dominance for the greater portion of the last two decades.

  7. I think Jones should stick to the business side because he actually quite good at that. Not so much at being a GM.

  8. Cowboys fans take more pride in Jones net worth, then their teams performance. Are they football fans, or just a fan of how much money he makes?

  9. I have a crazy idea for Jerry Jones.

    Bear with me here.

Jerry, how about this. Make Jason Garrett your GM, and hire an “alpha” head coach.

You trust Garrett and presumably trust him to toe the line and be a good soldier. Having no buffer between you and an “alpha” coach like Jimmy Johnson was tough on you and everyone. Garrett could be just the right kind of buffer to allow the steam to release and help make deals that you and the coach could both live with. And provide a foil for any decisions you or the coach don’t want – or do want – credit for.

Pick your alpha coach of choice and know that you will get credit for putting this system in place and making it happen. The recent streak of frustration isn’t helping anyone’s legacy, apart from the financials.

But Cowboys fans don’t need financials, they want winners. I’ve been a fan from the Staubach days to now. Give us a winner and you will get credit!

  10. -Jones has 3 Super Bowl rings, Johnson has zero and will always have zero.
-Jones is in the Hall of Fame, Johnson can only go to the Hall of Fame if he pays the admission fee.
-Jones has the best stadium in the NFL, and maybe in all of pro sports, Johnson has to share a stadium with another team.
-Jones has the most valuable team in professional sports according to Forbes, Johnson does not.
    shall i go on?
I know Jerry can be a knucklehead sometimes but Johnson should think twice before he makes a dumb comment.

  11. Chris Johnson is awesome. So much better than his brother and a breathe of fresh air. Makes me wonder if it’s more than coincidence the team looks like it is heading in the right direction since Woody went to England.

‘Ol Jer has 3 Super Bowl rings, so tell me again how many the eagles & jets have.

  13. The Jets have Darnold to look forward to, i am stuck watching Yak Prescott and his buck 70 yds every week. Man does he stink

  14. Jerry Jones does have rings, but only due to Jimmy Johnson. Then once Jerry’s ego gets bruised he runs Jimmy out of town. Switzer wins one for Jerry with Johnson’s team. There are his rings.

And Jerry Jones has been averaging 8-8 ever since. Give him credit for being good at business, but as far as football goes he deserves very little.

  15. Nice stadium, titles from decades ago…HOF owner, most valuable team… hell why watch games this season. What’s the point.

  16. So far the Darnold is farther along than Baker Mayfield, Josh Rosen and Josh Allen, the other quarterbacks drafted near the top. It helps him in New York because he has an extra R in his last name.

  17. All of the Cowboy fans who are upset by Johnson’s comment about your owner should just put a Band-Aid on their hurt feelings. I would suggest one made by Johnson & Johnson, it’s a very good product.

    _______________

Come on they can’t take pride in what they see on the field, so they have to take pride in something.

yes, the Jets are appropriately owned by a band-aid owner, they have been putting on band-aids since Joe Willy left.

Let’s see how Johnson likes paying fines for his kneeling players. That won’t last long. Guaranteed!

Only two players kneeled last week and both were Dolphins.

  21. Ralph Wilson was a massive tool as well that time he ordered Wade Phillips to start Rob Johnson in the playoff game after Flutie GOT THEM THERE.

I always call that 18 year drought “The Curse of Flutie”.

  22. Let’s see how Johnson likes paying fines for his kneeling players. That won’t last long. Guaranteed!

No Jet player has kneeled since this nonsense began.

  23. Love the comments about 20 year old SB rings. Just keep living in the past because you know your team has no future.

  24. .
skeletor isnt any good at football either…
He kept romo there who accomplished nothing at all…
2 playoff wins in a career is pathetic
