The league has fined Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence for a roughing the passer penalty on Cam Newton. Lawrence will lose $20,054.

Referee Walt Anderson penalized Lawrence on a third-and-10 incompletion by Newton on the Panthers’ first drive. The Panthers used the new life to reach the Dallas 5-yard line before Christian McCaffrey fumbled, and Lawrence recovered.

Lawrence had seven tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack and the recovered fumble in the Cowboys’ 16-8 loss to the Panthers.

Lawrence earned one fine last season, a $12,154 penalty for an illegal celebration.

  1. So they’re fined now, even if the penalty was wrong? Lawrence was pushed into cam on that play, the only way he could have avoided touching Cam was if he could teleport.

  2. Lawrence should have been fined for the ridiculous unnecessary hit on Williams knee that probably ended his season. That was pure garbage just like all the rest of the Cowboys!

first of all it was purely an accident the way that Lawrence fell into Williams, go watch the replay.
2nd of all the medical staff of the Carolina Panthers is “pure garbage” for letting Williams play after tearing his MCL and dislocating his knee cap just l month prior, the slightest twist or hit that Williams would have taken on that knee would have re-aggravated that injury, blaming Lawrence for his injury is just moronic on your part.

  4. Hey, this is over the top – this was clearly a no fault hit. Oh, and by the way, where was the missing TAUNTING flag when Cam “HotDog” Newton was standing a midfield, with time on the clock, waving to the fans in an attempt to humiliate the Cowboy Team? Cam, old buddy, Cowboys and Cowboy fans have long memories, so the next time you play in JerryWorld expect to take some hard, legal, hits from the Boys.

  5. I think this kind of penalty is crap! A player gets push / block down on a play and hits the knee or crawls into the leg of a QB is not only penalized but also fined. What is a defensive player suppose to do? I guess the NFL wants them to just sit out that play once your on the ground! I saw this same type of play happen in at least one other game this past week. The only thing I can say is that every defensive play who was pushed / blocked to the ground and touched the legs of the QB was penalized! I simply don’t like whatever rule this is. Roughing the passer, illegal hits and blindside hits, are one thing but touching the legs of a QB without roughing him up, is another thing! Just put flags on the QB or play two hand touch already!

  6. Total crap…the NFL might as well become a flag football league. Every play
was a penalty. In this instance Lawrence was blocked into Cam’s lower body
causing little contact. I am so glad that now I get to watch 3 teams
compete …2 football teams and now the refs.
Every play there was a penalty. It made all the fans sick. 30 percent of the
game involves a penalty or some replay. The refs are terrified if they don’t
call some tricky tacky penalty that occurs on the right side of the field
while the QB does a thee step out pass to the other side. I actually saw an illegal
contact call against the Giants when the opposing QB threw a three step
out to the other side. The play lasted 3 seconds but somehow the official
felt that the opposite CB had put his hands on the opposing WR a foot outside the
5 yard cushion. Even the WR who got the call was shaking his head.
    Please stop.

I’m sure you’re right Dr stucats…that helmet and shoulder pad into the side of the knee of a guy standing still had nothing to do with him getting injured…you’re the moron in this conversation and probably also “pure garbage”
