Matt Patricia influenced by time with Patriots, but “we’re building the Lions”

The Lions will be hosting the Patriots on Sunday night and that means a leading storyline of the game will be the matchup between the two head coaches.

Matt Patricia joined Bill Belichick’s staff in New England in 2004 and ran the defense from 2012 until he got the Lions head coaching job this offseason. He’s made a few moves that seem inspired by his time in New England since landing in Detroit, but Patricia insists that he’s trying to do more than mimic what worked for his mentor.

“I have great respect for Coach Belichick as both a mentor and friend, but the main thing that is important for me to stress is that we’re not building the Patriots here,” Patricia said, via Mike Reiss of ESPN.com. “We’re building the Lions. I’m trying to do it the way I know, and the way I believe the game should be played. A lot of it is influenced by my time in New England, but in the end, it has to be the style that fits me and this team. I’m not Coach Belichick. There’s only one. He’s unbelievable. I just have to try to be the best head coach I can be that helps our team, and that’s the biggest thing.”

While Nick Saban’s done just fine for himself at the collegiate level, former Belichick assistants have not fared well in the NFL. Patricia’s not off to the best start when it comes to bucking that trend and we’ll find out Sunday if he’s come up with any wrinkles that can move that record in a better direction.

  1. Here’s an idea Matt, stop signing Patriot cast aways, fire your D-Coordinator, and figure out why Jim Caldwell was more successful as a coach than you.

  2. But here’s the thing. No one can really criticize him if he does mimic some of the things that were done in NE. That’s why you hired him. You liked what the Patriot’s defense did and you hope he can replicate that for your team. And you’re hoping that he will bring some of the things that made Belicheck and the Patriots successful. That is the reason that no one is trying to hire former assistant coaches the Browns.

  3. Even with the Giants currently struggling on offense I’m thrilled that Patricia passed on coaching in NY. His shtick, the bushy beard, huge belly, and of course the silly pencil, has gotten old quick. He punishes his veteran players with running? That dude is a heart attack waiting.

  4. One ex staff member turns Belichick in for filming practices. The first thing another more recent ex coach does is build a screened fence around practice field. Go figure.

  5. if Patty gets fired he will be back with the Patsie’s just like Josh McWeasel did. I heard an interview yesterday with Mitch Berger who used to be a punter in the NFL with the Steelers and the Broncos when McWeasel was their coach & he said that he was the worst coach he has ever had in football.

  6. Seems what a lot of BB’s disciples have done is try to emulate EVERYTHING the Pats do hoping that’s where the magic comes from. When Josh McDaniels was in Denver there were stories about him tweaking minor, non-football employees jobs just so the front office would totally mirror the Patriots. Spend too much time on pointless side items and the main stuff you’ve been hired for suffers. It’s a bit like thinking you’ll end up with a race car if you just spend enough getting the paint job exactly right.

  7. The reason it won’t happen is it takes a patient owner to let someone come in and build a culture – DeBartolo in San Fran, Rooney’s in Pittsburgh, Kraft in NE and what used to be Dallas.

Now it’s “Win by year two or you’re out of here”

  8. Before y’all whine about how bad the Pats D was last year, it was badly banged up with key guys like captain Hightower and 6 others on IR – some even before the season started (and arguably their best D guy Ninkovich an unexpected very late sudden preseason retirement). And toward the end even some replacements were out or walking wounded. Looked like that team had no rights reaching the playoffs with that D and yet that D still did just enough to get there, eventually creeping up to 5th in points allowed (296, 18.5 ppg) for the season.

  9. You took over a 9-7 team that was in playoff contention Sir. That’s a weak excuse. You, yes you Matt Patricia, have made the team demonstrably worse with the same personnel and same OC. That just doesn’t wash. Something made the Lions worse, and all signs point to Matt Patricia.

  10. Not looking good for Bombur.

Better get square quick. That is shaping up to be one tough division with the Bears looking significantly better.

No they didn’t and it didn’t happen. You’re conflating a fake story about the Pats supposedly filming a Rams 2001 SB walkthrough with the 2007 complaining by Mangini that the Pats had a camera a couple of yards too close to the sidelines. That camera was confiscated at the end of Q1 of wk1. The rules were, however, wooly, because AFTER Tagliabue’s 2006 memo the Jets were caught videoing the Pats but Tagliabue said it was ok (and would still be in 2007) because the Jets weren’t intending to use the film “during the game”. 15 minutes into 2007 incoming Fraudger dumps on the Pats and says no, “during the game” means not just that game but during any game thereafter. In effect he had retrospectively reinterpreted the rule to get the Pats. It was his first fraud. Notably, Mangini later said he very much regretted.

    It’s 2 games dude, chill.

  13. The Lions just called Sgt Richie Baker of the USA Insurance commercials to rock their world as the new Detroit coach.

Lions fans have been patient, understanding, heart broken and “chilled for a LONG time. We expect more from this organization from all the time we’ve followed them, “dude”.

  15. We all know that guys who come from the Belichick coaching tree have not done well at all as HC’s. I don’t think Patricia was a good choice for the Lions. He’s in over his head.

  16. The problem being is Patricia has a terrible team. He’ll be lucky to win two games on a fluke play.

  17. Before you hate, remember we have one playoff win in 61 YEARS and 0-16 season in the books… says:

The Lions are the Browns of the NFC, worst team in the division and one of the worst teams in the NFL.

    LoLions!!!
    ***************************

And they swept your Packers last season.

  18. Patricia needs understand that being part of this organization requires you to swallow your pride. The team has struggled since 1957 and can never seem to figure out the concept of winning in the post season. So much wasted talent and disappointing seasons forces their desperate and pathetic fans have to pretend to have multiple names and live a life a denial and embarrassment.

  19. I’ll give Patricia a little more benefit of the doubt since it’s only 2 games in and he is a rookie head coach, but the players’ demeanor in that Week 1 game AT HOME against the freakin’ JETS still made me very concerned that he might not have the locker room. We’ll see.

And don’t be surprised if The Lions shock New England on Sunday night. Crazier things have happened, as we Lions fans know!!

    ROAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! #ONEPRIDE

  20. Not a Lions or Patricia fan at all, but Patricia just got there and I’m pretty sure that he doesn’t have all of the players that he wants to execute his defense. The Lions are a borderline threat to make the playoffs the last few years, but don’t go anywhere when they do, but they still have Jim Bob Cooter. Actually, I don’t really care about the Lions and have no idea what I’m talking about. I just wanted to say Jim Bob Cooter- and I did. Twice.

  21. He’s looking more like Marinelli than Manginni. 0-16 is not out of the question they way theve looked. 2-14 is more realistic.

  22. Someone above referenced marinelli… after that jets game I thought Patricia was gonna ask us to “believe in the invisible” haha. Maybe he will after the beating we get from the Pats Sunday night.

On a side note do other franchises fans remember the infamous quotes of literally every past coaching failure the way we do? Maybe browns fans?

  23. Parcells is in the HOF and he was an assistant under beligoat. Come to think of it though, he had a career losing record on his own and never won a playoff game!

  24. Jim bob cooter..said it twice….that was funny.

Give the coach a chance. You fans sound like some of the players..he is making us practice hard and we don’t want to but we want to win.
