Bill Belichick: No one knows us better than Matt Patricia does

Matt Patricia’s defense has not looked good in his first two games as head coach of the Lions. But Patriots coach Bill Belichick thinks Patricia will have his defense ready when their teams meet on Sunday night.

Patricia spent the last 14 years in New England, the last six years as the Patriots’ defensive coordinator, and Belichick said he believes Patricia has some intelligence on how to stop the Patriots’ offense.

“Nobody knows us better than Matt does,” Belichick said. “He’s worked against our offense every day for a long time so I’m sure they’ll address it in ways that will be challenging for us, make some in-game adjustments and perform at a high level.”

Realistically, it seems unlikely that Patricia’s Lions defense will be much more than a speed bump for Tom Brady & Co. on Sunday, given the way that defense has performed through its first two weeks. But Belichick won’t take anything for granted.

  1. I cannot believe how many people are writing the Patriots off already after one defeat on the road to a very good team. They may not be Super Bowl contenders this season but a “bad” team.

Get back to me after 4/6 weeks.

  2. Patricia…..just another in a long line of Belicheat coaches who can’t coach their way out of a paper bag when they leave the organization.

The same people did the same thing last season after they got blown out at home to KC
And yes NE will still be making another SB run
Anyone who passes judgement on any team good or bad (almost any team) after 2 or 3 weeks of the start of the season probably just started watching football.

Wasn’t KC 6-0 to start last season?

  4. Takes a while to get your sea legs as an NFL coach. Give Matt Patricia time.
BB lost his first 4 games or so, and had a losing season his first year as an NFL coach.

For folks who recall, in the NBA they used to call Andrew Tony the ‘microwave’ because he could heat up immediately, coming off the bench. Well, I think some fans expect everyone to be brilliant, immediately.

I wonder how they were their first day at a new job.
    Not a microwave, I’ll bet.

Is that is why he put a screened fence around the Lions practice field?

  6. “The same people did the same thing last season after they got blown out at home to KC”

Actually the same people say the same things after every Pat game, win or lose, and have for years. The Pats can go 14-2 and win a Super Bowl and every single week we’re told the Pats are terrible, the players are terrible, Brady is terrible etc etc.

When the NFL was at its peak fans used to appreciate great play by players on any team. They might curse those players when they were beating up on the team you cheer for, but they could still enjoy a great player playing well.

Now if its not their team all a lot of so called fans can do is insult, belittle and berate other teams and players no matter how good they are.

I think the quality has really dwindled. Teams and players.

I grew up watching Montana, Elway, Barry, Deion, LT, Randall, Reggie, The Run-and-Shoot, the K-Gun, the 46, Dickerson, The Hogs.. the Triplets, Favre.. on and on and on.. all in a 10 year window..

I don’t see that today. Maybe its nostalgia? Wrapped up in memories of Tecmo, and Madden.. Maybe I’m just old?.. but I don’t relate or enjoy 90% of the League or its players at this point.

And I’d rather gauge my eyes out than watch a second of another Patriots game.

  8. Pats secondary is a horrorshow, I take nothing for granted anymore. I believe they have zone schemes actually named “Sleepy Coverage” and “Potluck.”

    TRUE…VERY TRUE

Social media, and the competition committee…have ruined a great game. Love how the really bitter fans say..”cheating” like it’s a 4th grade recess game

  10. Patricia has told his team that he knows how the Pats work and his plan has everything covered. So as long as they haven’t added a Josh Gordon or something like that this will go fine.

  11. Patricia may know everything about the Pats offense but he doesn’t have the players to do anything about it. The Lions are bad, top to bottom.

They do seem that way and also especially ‘on third down give away the underneath crossing routes’. But also they had those schemes under Patricia too.

  13. I hope Patricia comes out wearing a sleeveless hoodie and Belichick counters with a backwards hat and pencil over his ear.

  14. The age of anonymous keyboard trolling leads people to say really stupid stuff. They would never say any of it in public because they would be ridiculed and thought an unintelligent sports fan.

You dont think that already? Oh, I get it. You doubt the ‘sports fan’ part.

Kudo’s for bringing back some wonderful early to mid 80’s memories, but Andrew Tony was “The Boston Strangler” and Vinnie Johnson was Vinnie “The Microwave” Johnson. I get what you are saying tho.
