Melvin Gordon leads the way as Chargers top 49ers

Chargers running back Melvin Gordon had a big game today, and a banged-up 49ers team couldn’t keep up.

Gordon gained 104 yards on 15 carries, and added 55 yards on seven catches, as the Chargers beat the 49ers 29-27.

The 49ers were playing without injured starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, but C.J. Beathard, making his first start of the season, played reasonably well in Garoppolo’s place. Beathard had to leave the game briefly with an injury as well, giving way to Nick Mullens, who had never before taken an NFL snap. Fortunately for the 49ers, Beathard was able to return and finish the game.

Several other 49ers, including tackle Joe Staley and receiver Dante Pettis, went down during the game. The 49ers are hurting right now.

The Chargers got three touchdown passes from Philip Rivers, as well as an 86-yard interception return from Trevor Williams, and the win improved their record to 2-2. The 49ers’ loss drops them to 1-3 as a disappointing season continues.

  1. Good game Chargers. It looks like your kicking woes couldn’t match our turnovers.

A fine effort by Beathard but ultimately he’s not a QB1, so all I can hope for is seeing a competitive team week in week out. The secondary is still a mess (glad they benched Ward) and the tackling problems showed up again. It’s been an odd season but I doubt the football gods will grant us mercy.

    Go Niners

  2. Beathard looked good, that popped up interception near the Charger’s goal line that took 7 off the board and put 7 up for the Charger’s was the difference in the game.

  3. Brick by brick is becoming pebble by pebble. Since Kyle and Lynch couldn’t be bothered to get an edge rusher the faithful can just wait till next year. next year. next year. . . yes there’s an echo in here.

  4. Chargers should seriously consider trading their first round pick for Justin Tucker or hell even Adam Vinateiri, kicker has been straight up killing them for a long time now.

  5. Well, judging by the lack of trolling the Seahawks comment section, I’m assuming the “faithful” have gone back into witness protection until next offseason. Maybe instead of whining about starting Beathard you can hire a coach that teaches tackling as part of his coaching regimen. Gordon was throwing niners off of him like they were high school players.

Oh funny seeing you here. There was an APB put out for you the firsr xouple of weeks but now that you beat the mighty Cardinals you’re back to your chest puffing tough guy act.

Also, Earl is just expressing what everyone feels about the Seahacks. No one wants to be stuck in a podunk town with the most notorious band wagon in sports.

  7. We will not forget Telesco’s dumping of Josh Lambo. Last year Koo and others lost some vital games. Telesco Stated clearly “WE WILL FIX THE KICKING GAME THIS YEAR.” The LA Chargers could have gotten Dan Bailey or even Janikowski who got a winning 52 YARD FIELD GOAL yesterday. Spanos again said “Don’t sign them..their too much money!” The LA Charger soccer field was packed yesterday……..with a sea of red 49’rs jersey’s. Wait till next week with a sea of Raiders jersey’s and costumes. The LA Chargers are a failed ‘re-location.’ The NFL and Owners have a huge problem and are ignoring it. Next up..Raiders to Las Vegas. Sad.

  8. The LA Chargers don’t get it! A weak place kicker demoralizes an otherwise good offense! It’s too late to sign a good kicker. This could finish them this year. The dumping of Josh Lambo should have gotten Telesco fired. Now we have a continuing problem.
