Bill Belichick got angry when Dolphins appeared to fake an injury

Getty Images

With the Patriots facing a fourth-and-2 in the second quarter on Sunday against the Dolphins, New England surprised Miami by lining its offense up on the field to go for it. And then the Dolphins, just when they needed some time to prepare, had a perfectly timed injury.

It was Miami cornerback Bobby McCain who suddenly fell down, causing the officials to call an injury timeout. After a moment, McCain got up and walked off the field appearing to be fine, and he went back in the game after that, although he later left the game with a real injury.

McCain sure looked like he was faking, and Patriots coach Bill Belichick was furious, telling the official on the sideline, “That’s f–king bulls–it.”

Belichick was right to be upset. If teams can get away with faking injuries to get free timeouts, the NFL is going to see a plague of “injuries” every time the defense wants to make a substitution, or slow down a hurry-up offense.

The league has the ability to fine teams and players for fake injuries. In 2012, the NFL fined the Steelers and wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders for an obvious fake injury. The NFL might need to crack down even further, perhaps even docking draft picks from teams that fake injuries. It’s a serious violation of the spirit of fair play, and it deserves serious punishment.

  1. Wait a minute. Belichick is accusing another team of cheating? How is it even possible to cheat against the biggest cheater in the history of football?

  2. belichick feel all the new england patriots cheating is acceptable.

The constant lopsided nfl officiating that favors new england is offensive.

  3. LOL.. Belichick upset a team cheated…………………..sorry i can’t stop laughing

Well, it takes one to know one…

    ******************************************************

A shameful admission by you, Daniel.

  5. Goodell allows cheating. There is a new rule in place for delay a game when it’s very obvious the player is cheating.

Of course, the refs look the other way when NE is victimized by actual cheating.

  6. I think the BB carries NY Jet-like disdain for the Dolphins since franchise icon, and a fellow who cheated his contractual way out of Baltimore btw, called BB “Belicheat.”

The hoodie was on record as saying he wasn’t gonna be “another Marv Levy” and coach into his 70’s. Now he’s man on a mission who will not stop until he’s surpassed the smug Shula in the victory column.

Wonder if he’ll gather up a Round Table of his Patriot greats to pop the champagne when the inevitable day arrives?

  7. This account does not seem correct. McCain did not re-enter the game. He was out for the rest of the game with an injury, according to the official playbook: “2nd Q 3-15-NE 32
(8:48) (Shotgun) 12-T.Brady pass short right to 13-P.Dorsett to NE 45 for 13 yards (29-M.Fitzpatrick; 55-J.Baker). MIA-28-B.McCain was injured during the play. He is Out.” How is that faking it? Besides, isn’t what New England tried to do, with running units back and forth off the field also just a little BS?

  8. My favorite is when Couglin tried this BS and two of his guys fell down in the huddle at the same time.

  9. You can’t fine teams or take away draft picks because you “think” they are faking injuries and in the same breath preach safety.

    Doesn’t work.

Simple solution is that each team gets two “injury” free timeouts per game. Any body goes down after that it deducts from the normal 3 timeouts per half. If a team is out of timeouts then it is a 10 yard penalty.

    Fair solution for everyone.

  10. Slippery slope when you start trying to assess what are real injuries and those that are faked to allow the defense time that otherwise cannot be secured. That being said, if after the fact, it is revealed that someone did fake an injury than there should be a severe fine for that individual as well as the team. No place for that in football, maybe soccer, but not american football.

  11. Lol, Belichick instructed his team to do this repeatedly while trying to slow down the Manning Colts.

    What’s good for the goose . . .

  12. It’s not possible for a ref to determine if someone is faking. So when a player does this new rule should say they sit for the rest of the series.

Then this crap will stop. Problem solved.

Payback for the days of the Pats doing it when Manning was witg the Colts? Let’s not act like this doesn’t already happen all the time.

    ——————-

The only difference is, Goodell has ruled on this before. He won’t here, because he wants to protect Miami, hoping they can win the division.

He did this in 2006, too, when Miami bought CBS audio from an employee to study Brady’s audibles and they won 21-0. Goodell claimed using technology for future scouting was ok then, but if NE did this, we all know what would happen.

  14. Didn’t they create the “faking an injury” rule over Willie McGinest pulling the same stunt?

No surprise BBs reaction but “Pot meet kettle.”

  15. Simple solution is that each team gets two “injury” free timeouts per game. Any body goes down after that it deducts from the normal 3 timeouts per half. If a team is out of timeouts then it is a 10 yard penalty.

Sounds good except for when team is driving late in the game with 1 timeout left and a player on defense deliberately targets another player to hurt them and force them to spend that timeout.

Draft picks??? LOL It is definitely poor sportsmanship, worth an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and fine. But draft picks?? No way

I talked to one lunatic patriots fan who said tom brady deflating ballls and belicheat taping other teams is the same as a player going offsides, b/c both are ‘breaking the rules’, and there is no levels to cheating LOL. It’s just simply impossible to have an intelligent conversation with a patriots fan. Had ANY of this happened against them they’d fully expect vacated superbowl wins and much more than stupid fines that no one cares about.

  17. Oh Shula was one of the biggest cheaters that the sport has ever seen. Screwed the Colts to join the Dolphins. Forced his players to take PEDs and painkillers under threat of being cut from the team.

He deserved the snowplow thing. 🙂

  18. This always used to happen against the Eagles to slow down Chip Kelly’s hurry up offence. It’s annoying but no way to stop it unless they start imposing a snap limit before re-entering the game or something

Cool story bro except the facts proved Brady didn’t deflate footballs and there’s nothing illegal about taping other teams. 🙂

  20. The Miami Dolphins were 3-0 with 2 of those wins outside the division.

The Patriots beat the Dolphins by 31 points and to be honest it felt like 61.

But but “AFC Least” or something. Tee hee 🙂

Even a casual football fan knows neither of the two events you cited occurred. It’s very well documented. So maybe the reason you can’t have an “intelligent conversation with a Patriots fan” lies not with them?

  23. Not a Pats for Dolphin fan, but there ought to be a rule that if your injury causes a stoppage in play, then you must stay out a minimum of 4 plays.

  24. Hahahaha! Coach Belichick and the Patriots are soooo deep in some people’s head.

The simple fact is that Robert Kraft was right. Just look at majority of the comments above.

    Dynasty.

  25. I agree with the message, but with all the times that Belichick and the Patriots have violated/stretched/evaded the rules, he is the wrong person to convey it.

  26. Love all the posts who are fine with it and say everyone does it

If this was a Pats player the sky would be falling

  27. as has been said, this was the only thing dolphins did successfully yesterday.

maybe it’s why patriots ran play action and had brady throw downfield with a 38-0 lead later in the game, rubbing it in faces of the “division leaders.”

dolphins started 3-0 on their way to 5-11

  28. Tee hee 🙂 Look how mad Patriot Hater gets. 🙂 Look at those hands shake with rage as Patriot fans pown them every single day on this board. Tee hee 🙂 So hilarious!

  29. He clearly faked it. Smart play. Once again only cheating when NE does it if not its “ok because NE deserves it.” Grow up. At least Bill didnt cry to the media and will push for a rule change.

  30. Remember when Dan Marino’s career ended with a 62-7 loss to the Jaguars. Good times! 🙂

  31. Like the time the Patriots faked multiple injuries when the Colts were on the goal line in the 2003 AFC championship game?

    Look it up. It’s disgusting.

Well, at least the Dolphins didn’t secretly film the Patriots practices during the week.
    ——-
The Denver Broncos are the only team to be caught and fined for doing that. 🙂

  33. So, now, we need to have the refs determine whether an injury is factual or fake? Get serious! Even the team doctors cannot determine whether or not a guy has a concussion. In this case, the guy did not re-enter the game, so, I would say he had a problem.

  34. Oh the delicious irony of Billy B. angered by someone else’s perceived cheating.
Though I’m quite sure it’s completely lost on him and all of the Pat sheep……er…I mean, fans.

  35. Belicheat won the game! Why is he still whining? Trying to distract the officials so he can pull a fast one next week? All this guy does is study the rule book looking for some horrible thing he can do that isn’t explicitly banned.

  36. Most commenters here make no sense. So, your telling me that the Patriots are bad because you think they cheated and cheating is bad unless its a team thats doing good cheating(?) against a bad cheater? Also if you can’t admit that your dislike of the Patriots is due to your envy of their last 2 decades of sucess then you’re cheating yourself.

  37. Remember when that little wussie Shula cried to the league about the snowplow begging the commissioner to reverse the outcome of the Patriot win that day? Yes he really did that. It really is a perfect representation of the inferior teams (and their fans who enable them) crying to the league about those meanie Patriots and that they win too much.

I’m glad Belichick is a vindictive SOB as well as being GOAT head coach.

    🙂

  38. If it’s not close to the end of the half or the end of the game, hurry-up-no-huddle offenses are CR@P. They’re gimmicky and they induce fatigue, which causes injuries. It is unsportsmanlike, too. Faking injuries is tit-for-tat.

  39. Did anyone notice Bobby McCain handing his cell phone to the trainer when he got to the sideline? I wondered why Bobby was doing the tomahawk motion to the trainer, then I saw the cell phone. I’m sure by now Bobby has hired a fake scientist to justify his injury, and I’m also sure he’s telling the media he’ll take this situation all the way to the Supreme Court, by God!

  40. Why are people saying that BB is “whining” about this? He said nothing about it after the game, only on the sidelines. This story was written by someone who saw the in game reaction, and nothing more.

Did you even bother to read the article before commenting? For your sake, I hope you did not read it, because the entire description of what happened and how Belichick reacted (including the linked article) is based upon what happened DURING THE GAME. Not after the game, and not since then. There is no quote from Belichick other than a lip-reading based interpretation, which, by the way, was obvious what he was saying.

  42. Haters think that the Patriots cheat; they were the cheated. Incidentally, the Steelers had deflated footballs reported two times. Where are the million dollar investigations, fines and suspensions?

  43. I actually laughed when they showed the replay of it….. he was most definitely faking it but I give him credit for being smart enough to know it needed to be done to help his team…… probably the best play of the game by the fins……
Bill being mad was funny too…. he had a right to be because it was so blatantly obvious it was a faked injury that it couldn’t come close to being somewhat believable…..
    Love some good gamesmanship!!!!

    WOW.

  46. There is not much question it was faked so Belichicks words ring true. But really there is nothing else the refs could have done. They have a guy down on the field they have to stop the game. No other choice. And even with everyone knowing it was nonsense Miami still gets the delay they wanted, and a delay is not something that can be taken back. Thats why the author is right there has to be stiff penalties for this stuff. I do know there are at least some level of fines that can be handed down and I will be interested to see what comes out if New York this week. Its only Mobday right now, too early to accuse them of ignoring it. Whether the level of fines is steep enough to provide a deterrent remains to be seen.

I though we call that stuff gamesmanship.

Yup. All the more reason to be upset to be honest. When the NFL goes out of their way to make a rule to make sure this no longer happens maybe they should make sure it doesn’t happen. Just sayin’

  56. The dude definitely faked an injury, but what’s funny is he didn’t even have to. The Pats changed personnel on the field and the Dolphins would have been given the opportunity to change defensive personnel as well. There was no need for him to do this.

You have the wrong play. it was fourth down, Miami was a little confused expecting a punt when Brady lined up to run a play, Dolphins only had 10 men on the field. He literally just sat down on his butt, it was comical. Pats had to punt after that. He came back as soon as legal. Later in the game he did have a real injury and left for good.

  61. LOL at the irony and good for the goose comments.

Let’s just gloss over the fact that the Pats aren’t the only team in the NFL that cheats.

  62. Johnwaldron8

My bad it was early 2000’s AFC championship game. It was in Indy. Colts were driving. On the goal line. New England couldn’t stop the offense, had no more timeouts, so two of the Patriots players fell down simultaneously. One got up when he realized the other one already did the same thing.

  63. Let’s just gloss over the fact that the Pats aren’t the only team in the NFL that cheats.
    ***************************************

This is the notion that gets me – it’s a federal case (literally) if the Pats do something but if done to them, all of these fans are like it’s no big deal, it’s not cheating it’s sportsmanship, or serves them right since they cheat.

Pats fans get it – you’re tired of the two decade dynasty and want it to end.

  64. If you aint cheating you aint trying……every team is trying to get the advantage, its a cut throat league for everyone involved. In the spirit of fair play and the spirit of the sport itself it is not right for a player to fake an injury. Football gods definitely shaking there head at Bobby Mccain and i think it shows as he did sustain an actual injury.

  65. All the other teams will do anything to cheat the Pats! They think they are getting even when the Pats never cheated! SMH!

  66. I see a double standard here…it’s ok for you to cheat…but not ok when someone cheats on you…stole a page out of your own book…

  67. “Treating the injury report with the respect of a handkerchief?” You seem to be confusing the Pats with the Colts! Remember when the Colts failed to report Lucks broken ribs? Remember the punishment for that? Since , there was no punishment, nothing to remember!

Not at all. If anything it’s a cry to the league to make sure the same standards are being applied league wide. The next time will literally be the first.

  70. LOL about the injury reports. Y’all are too funny.

The Pats … the only team to work the injury report. I could give at least 5 examples from last week alone from other teams doing the exact same thing. LOL

  71. When a player is injured enough to go down, he should have to sit out the rest of the quarter. Tired of wr, db, faking injuries when the get burnt or run a wrong route. Or tired linemen doing the same.

  72. Wow, I remember being furious many years ago over this issue as I watched my Ducks change the way that football is played. To this day I can’t stand Vontage Burfict for exactly this reason.

  73. Make an injured player sit out the rest of a drive, or the rest of a quarter. Maybe then some of them will actually try to get off the field when they have an less severe injury.

  74. It was so blatantly obvious that he was faking. It is a penalty, but I am not surprised it went uncalled given the score. It was bush league, but it didn’t change the dynamic of the final score. It still should be called, but whatever. It isn’t like it was a banner day for officiating (see the Raiders/Browns for a slew of garbage).

  75. Tdubdizzle

I appreciate the response. The game you’re thinking of was from 11/30 during the 2003 regular season, when both teams were 9-2. Two Patriots players did not go down with injuries at the same time. The broadcast showed McGinest was heading to the sideline and Ty Law limping. Law never went down and stayed in the game. McGinest was out of the game for 3 plays and then returned for the final 2. The entire game is available online if you want to re-watch it.

You’re still missing the point. Either faking injuries is terrible and an affront to decency and fair play, regardless of who does it, or it’s just gamesmanship and no big deal. In other words, you should be as mad about what the Dolphins (or Colts, or Giants, or Steelers, etc) player did this past Sunday as you are about what McGinest did 14 years ago. Or you say “That’s just football” and move on.
