Eagles one win away from evening rivalry with Giants for first time ever

On October 15, 1933, the Philadelphia Eagles, a team in its first year of existence, went to the Polo Grounds to take on the New York Giants. It did not go well: The Giants destroyed the Eagles 56-0, winning the first game between the two teams and starting what would be a longstanding trend of the Giants getting the better of their rivals.

But this season the Eagles have a chance to even the rivalry for the first time ever: After the Eagles beat the Giants on Thursday nights, the rivalry’s all-time record is 86 wins for the Giants, 85 wins for the Eagles, and two ties. That means if the Eagles win on November 25, the rivalry will be tied for the first time since it started in 1933.

The Giants dominated the rivalry in the early years, and by 1970 they were 20 games over .500 against the Eagles, 46-26-1. More recently the rivalry has been more competitive, but it only started to turn decisively in the Eagles’ favor in the last decade, with Philadelphia winning 17 of the last 21 games between the two teams.

Given the current state of the two teams, with the Eagles building a Super Bowl winner around a talented young quarterback and the Giants struggling to move on from an aging quarterback, it shouldn’t surprise anyone if the Eagles even the series in November and then move ahead in 2019. For the first time ever, the Eagles may soon be able to say they’ve had the better end of their rivalry with the Giants.

The Giants roster consists of Barkley, Beckham and a bunch of flotsam and jetsam. They need a major overhaul on both sides of the ball. Gettleman should have taken the Jets deal that the Colts accepted:

“The Jets moved up three spots to No. 3, while sending the No. 6 overall pick, two second-round choices this year (Nos. 37 and 49) and their second-rounder in 2019 to the Colts.”

After the Colts deal he should have traded out of #6 and kept trading down until he had a bevy of first day picks to shore up the entire roster.

  2. They need 3 more wins in the Super Bowl to get even with the 4 X Super Bowl Champions !

  3. Drafting a RB with the 2nd overall pick when you have a 39 year old QB was dumb. No doubt Barkley is a great player but the QB position is just too important in today’s NFL. Perfect example was Thurs. nights game. Wentz and Barkley were both 2nd overall picks. Both had great games on Thurs. however Barkley’s great performance produced 13 points while Wentz produced 34 points. Yes, Barkley rushed for 130 yards but the Eagles rushed for 110 with Smallwood and Clement, a former 5th rd. pick and an undrafted free agent. What was the difference in the game? Carson Wentz on 3rd down vs. the Giants: 14 of 15 for 168 yards and 2 TDs (152.9 passer rating).

  4. I would much rather say they are three Super Bowl wins away for evening rilvaly with the NEW YORK FOOTBALL GIANTSπŸ†πŸ†πŸ†πŸ†

  5. Some teams are built from the fantasy football, rich guy plaything perspective. Frequently these end up being short term situations. NY is a prime example with their SB wins coming close together with a large gap between #3 & #4. One large core group held together for a condensed time frame. Unsupportable over a long term, say 18 years or so. Other teams are built from a football perspective. These teams, while not always ending up the last team standing in any particular season, seem to be a factor in every season and are more often than not one of the final four. You can figure out which is which.

  6. As a Giants fan…I want Superbowl runs….The Eagles are on one…I am jealous! Who knows when/if the next Giants Superbowl run will happen?

When you go 4W-19L in the last 2 years….there are many problems.

I’m no expert…but I think the QB, OL and DL need to be strong…Having great receivers and RBs are no good if you can’t the ball to them.

As an Eagles fan, I’ve enjoyed the rivalry with the Giants over the years and consider them to be our true rivals within the division.

Come on, you’re only saying that because we’ve been winning against them a lot recently, our true closest rivals in recent history are definitely the Cowboys

  8. A true NEW YORK FOOTBALL GIANT FAN knows the Redskins are the tradiodinal rilvary the iggle fans make all the teams in the NFC EAST therir rivaly because we all had trophies πŸ†πŸ†πŸ†πŸ†πŸ†πŸ†πŸ†πŸ†and they had none ,well I forgot they have one now !

  9. If the Eagles were 0 – 1 against the Giants at one time, weren’t they one game away from tying the series then?

  10. The Cowboys never thought of the iggles as their rilvary the iggles have always been benith the Cowboys ,Cowboys always beat the iggles it hasn’t been until recently since parody has come into the league that the iggles have somewhat steadied the ship !

  11. This is no rivalry.
Hasn’t been for the past 10 years.
G bags are a disgrace to the nfc east.
Worst team in the NFL two seasons running.
    Period

  12. Eagle beat the one of the worst teams in the NFL and they say that they are back! LMAO! No you guys still STINK! Facts!
Giants rb has ONE good game and everyone says he is legit. Many of rbs have has great games here and there only to Never amount to anything. Even IF he is legit so? He will be like Barry Sanders with the Lions All Them Years!
East is a wreck right now for sure. But there is ZERO hope for the giants and redskins.

  13. good win by the eagles
but Manning – this guy is so finished
NY is a joke right now
a team led by Eli, embarrasses the NFL and its fans

  14. I can’t wait. I had to drink massive amounts of coffee to stay awake last Thursday. It gave new meaning to the word β€œSleepfest.”

  15. JudgeMathis2018: okay you said the quarterback, the offensive line and the defensive line need to be strong. You prettt much named everything except the water boy.

  16. Its the fifth game of 16. Let’s look at records after 12 games played. One things for sure, Dallas stinks now and will then. Washington has a chance. NY drafting a running back at #1 was plain stupid. As long as Wentz is playing Philly will rule the NFC East.

You need a history lesson. Eagles were winning champions before the cowboys even existed and even when the cowboys started they were terrible. But thanks for proving the point that the cowboys only won due to buying their SBs and outspending other clubs. That and the Hershel Walker trade…. Cowboys can’t hang in the salary cap era without a crazy unbalanced trade.

Cowboys have not even made it to the NFC Championship game, let alone the SB in 22-23 years. Eagles been to 6 in that span. How about you educate yourself and cool it with the beneath us stuff cause if anything… you have been our little brother that is just dieing for attention for the past two decades.

    LMAO. Here are some facts:

Dak ranks 31st in deep-throw percentage, The Cowboys sit at 2-3 and their passing game is among the worst in the league. Dallas currently ranks 29th in passing, averaging just 172 yards through the air per contest.

In his last 15 regular season starts Dak has thrown for more than 200 yds 5 times. By comparison, Blake Bortles has done it 10 times over the same period. Let that sink in for a minute.

As long as Jerrah is your owner and Garrett is your coach, your team will stink. Facts.

beating the giants lol……yep sure your back …..LMAO!

  23. CALIZCOWBOYZ- i read a lot of confident comments from cowboys fans after their close win vs the giants. At least philly whipped them. I didnt take pride in the eagles victory over the giants because i knew the giants arent a good team. I did take pride in how they beat them down though. If the eagles are gonna be a good team then they have to dominate teams like that, not have a close one-score win like your cowboys did. Hopefully it keeps rolling into next week. Hey caliz, real question here. I have a few friends that are cowboy fans and they are done with dak. Is that just them or is that how all of you guys feel? And remember when people wanted to compare dak to wentz and you guys claimed dak was 10 times better than wentz? Lol yea i dont hear that very often anymore.

If I recall one of the Cowboys two wins is against the Giants.

  25. Dak did great when he had Romo (a pro bowl qb) to learn from, guide him and teach him. Now he has No coaches at all.
Moore never was even a back up in the NFL YET he is Daks mentor? Teacher? What a joke. Then he has FOUR NEW WR’S?
    Come on, this is NOT all on Dak. P E R I O D !

And again, eagles Cowboys SAME record after tomorrow. So ease up on the “we are back smack” its embarrassing.

They don’t play each other for the title so that statement makes little to no sense, troll.

  28. Eli Manning has won 4 of the last 21 matchups between the Eagles and Giants. You know who else can say that? Donovan McNabb.

  29. People miss the real reason the Eagles have been so successful the last 20 years, it has to do with their owner. Jeff is a class act and the Eagles are only 2nd to NE in wins over the last 20 years. This is not an accident and people should give this organization the credit it deserves. The rest of the division can keep talking about their trophies from 30 years ago, but the Eagles have good ownership and good people running that team and they are going to close the cap on everything because Jeff and Howie are not going anywhere for a LONG time. Besides if you want to talk about trophies from 30 years ago then you should count the Eagles championships from before the superbowl era. 30 years and 60 years… Who cares… Those are all in the past. This century is what matters and the Eagles are doing pretty good.

  30. The Eagles will pull even on Nov 25th and then move decisively ahead over the next decade.
