Cam Newton: It’s about how we rebound

There are times when it doesn’t take a lot of words to describe what happened in a football game and Thursday night was one of those times for the Panthers.

They started the game with a brisk touchdown drive, but gave up two touchdowns in 13 seconds in the first quarter and trailed the Steelers 24-7 early in the second quarter as things went the other way in a hurry. They would wind up losing 52-21 and Panthers quarterback Cam Newton summed it up by saying his team “got whooped.”

Newton also said it was important to focus on what comes next rather than dwell on that whooping for too long.

“I’ve been playing in this league long enough to understand that you need to fight through games like this,” Newton said, via the team’s website. “You are going to have these types of games in the league, but it’s going to be about how we rebound. We’ll bounce back from this.”

At 6-3, the Panthers have plenty of possibilities ahead of them if they can rebound from Thursday night’s thumping but it will be more than a week before we find out if they’re able to pull that off.

  1. Don’t be too fooled. Panthers weren’t the 6-2 team they considered themselves to be headed into last night. The 6 wins (5 at home) were over average or poor teams with a combined record of 24-34. The one win against a team barely over .500 was at home to the Bungles but only thanks to Dalton throwing 4 picks. And Panthers’ sole away-win was thanks to their 21-points in Q4 at the average (4-4) Eagles. The 3 losses have now come against teams with a combined record of 15-9-1, inc a loss to the average (4-4) Falcons. What it all means is that Panthers are really a very average team, not a good one.

  2. Maybe this will tamp down some of the “Cam for MVP” talk that’s been circulating. Anyone who watches the Panthers regularly has to realize McCaffrey has been the dominant offensive force of this team all season, and inexplicably they went away from him for a long time after the initial drive where he was unstoppable.

  3. As a life long Newton critic for his often childish ways.

I’m going to give him credit for a well spoken and humbled, after game interview.

Shout out to the Steelers, thanks for helping my Falcons.

  4. They’re 6-3. It’s just one game. Also TNF games are just bad, so bad. Either they’re an awful slugfest, or a one sided beat down. Barely watched them last year, and don’t even bother this year. I just check the score.

  5. He is awful. He has the pocket awareness of a dime store mannequinn, and the only pass he can complete with any regularity is one directly up the center of the field between the hash marks on a timed crossing route that is so predictable it should be intercepted 75% of the time. Good luck with that.

  6. Rebound? You played no better than you did against that sorry Washington Numbskin team. You just haven’t got the skills necessary to be a pro caliber QB. You can cherry pick teams with losing records and win, but against quality opponents, you aren’t capable.

It was joy last night to see you getting pounded. The Pittsburgh team thoroughly handled you and tore your defense a new one. How is that acquisition of the squatter Eric Reid doing for ya?

This is the team you TRULY are – once again a product of hype and you are a paper tiger team.

  7. Yes, they probably will and hope so…. but I enjoyed every minute of that game.

I like that Carolina/Cam were humbled.

I like that the Steelers are performing at such a high offensive level without Bell.

And I’m not a fan of either team.

  8. The fact Cam was still in the game risking injury, just to heave a 50 yard double covered PI into the endzone to get a gift ‘positive finish’ TD there in the 4th was criminal on Riverboat Ron’s part. NFL QBs need to always under throw long balls so their receivers can slow up and have DBs run into them every time,

  9. OK can we finally stop this nonsense talk about Cam Newton being in the race for MVP? Newton is an athletic freak but he’s not on the same level with Breeze, Brady, Mahomes, or even Rivers when it comes to reading defenses and makeing quick decisions. When Newton gets pressured his first reaction is to run. He can’t make the 2 second decision that the great ones can he needs more like 3 to 4 seconds to make his second and third level reads.

  10. The reading defenses and making quick decisions thing is tired and old. That’s simply not true as he’s had to make more reads and quick decisions under Norv than before. You’re obviously not watching football. I think McCaffrey’s production in the receiving game supports the claims of reading defenses and making quick decisions. He’s having an MVP Year, stop hating.

  11. A guy who won the MVP as a quarterback isn’t a quarterback? LOL. I’d love to hear the reasons why people hate Cam so much. His confidence really bothers people.

  12. Panthers are way, way overrated. Their offensive line looked like swiss cheese last night…ain’t gonna catch the best team in football lookin like DAT!

    WHO DAT!!

  13. Superman must of left the cape at home because he sure did nothing last night. We did not get to hear that drawn out huuuuuut huuuuut as he ran for his life most of the night. He had it handed to him and must take the crap as he likes to dish it out when he wins. Reality Cam a leader means more than the cape and towel act on the sidelines.

  14. SMACK DOWN. Nobody forgets a blow out like this. You’re going to wear the Steeler’s Brand on your butts for the rest of your life. OWNED.

  15. Newton was at Florida, buried on the depth chart, then busted for stealing a laptop. I also remember reading that he was involved in an academic cheating scandal. He left the Gators, went JUCO, then re-emerged at Auburn along with an ugly payola scandal involving his reverend father. While there is no doubt that he is physically gifted, Cam is basically a narcissistic diva. I enjoyed watching Denver kick his ass in Super Bowl L and I enjoyed watching the same thing happen to him again last night. And I hope to see him get his ass kicked a few more times before he’s done – without a conference or league championship.

  16. I was concerned about Russell Wilson throwing a pick-6 recently but after watching last night I will forget about it.

Cam Newton made Russell Wilson look like a superstar last night.that Pick 6 that he threw from The End Zone to avoid a two-point safety was just stupid. If Russell had done that I’d be really worried.

Cam even sat there like Eli Manning a couple of times and got sacked without really moving.

Hahaha no he’s not having an MVP year, you don’t get curb stomped by over 30 points during an MVP year. He’s an an above average QB simply by the benefit of his athletic abilities but that’s it. MaCaffrey’s has production because he’s the first check down and when a running back is your leading receiver it speaks volumes about your level of play.

Most Valuable Participant maybe. As in the Purple Participation ribbon which he has brought to your team every year. Open your eyes.

  19. Cam, keep chewing your wild mountain blueberry blue gum.
On the field you can’t handle adversity and it shows year after year. Forget about a poor secondary and poor OL. Cam is and always will be an issue for the Panthers.

  20. On the field, you can’t handle adversity and it shows year after year? He led the Panthers to their biggest come-from-behind victory in franchise history on the road against the Eagles a couple of weeks ago, what are you talking about? The NCAA is a scam and wouldn’t it be smart to make money off of a system that makes millions of $$ on players names and likeness. The Florida transgressions happen to a lot of kids, he was 18. And first read check down means he was able to read the defense, saw nothing and made a quick decision. Lol Your disdain for him has nothing to do with facts, just the fact he’s confident and unlike any quarterback you’ve ever seen.

  21. Only rookies and Cam Newton throw a pick 6 like he did last night.

How does a veteran not know NOT to throw that ball?

  22. I guess Cam’s lighting quick decision making abilities must have failed him last night because he was sacked liked a dozen times while he stood in the pocket forever trying to go through his reads.

Well, he’s just so doggone uppity. I mean maybe if he were a little more respectful and knew his place. Why back in my day, boys like him knew what was what.

That’s what I hear in comments about him, @youngnoizecom.
