No Gronkowski on Sunday, again

As the Patriots try to run their winning streak to seven, they won’t have 87, again.

Per multiple reports, tight end Rob Gronkowski won’t play on Sunday. It will be the third game in four weeks missed due to lingering ankle and back issues. It was the back injury that coincided with Gronkowski actually missing games; he has had multiple back surgeries during his football career, dating back to his final season in college.

The ongoing injury issue calls into question the wisdom (and fairness) of Gronkowski having his below-market contract rectified not by a bump in base salary, but by an incentive package. Beyond losing $62,500 for each game during which he isn’t on the active roster, Gronkowski will now have a very hard time hitting any of the four categories that would pay him $1.1 million each, with a maximum additional payment of $3.3 million. His best chance at this point will be to earn $1.1 million for participating in 80 percent of the offensive snaps. After Sunday, however, he will have played in only 70 percent of the team’s 2018 games.

While there’s currently no reason to believe the absence will extend beyond the team’s Week 11 bye (then again, there’s currently no reason to think it won’t), the situation puts a dark cloud over what could be Gronkowski’s final year in New England, if not his final year in the NFL.

UPDATE 3:39 p.m. ET: Despite those reports, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports that Gronkowski is traveling to Tennessee with his teammates. A final decision about his availability will be made on Sunday.

  1. He’s due 10 million next year there is no way the patriots are going to take a cap hit on this guy.
Can’t say he didn’t have a good run though,But it’s time that the patriots moved on from him.

  2. Seems wise and fair considering he was contemplating retiring and then asked not to be traded. And he’s been productive racking up 448yds in 7 games (65yds/gm) despite playing hurt and still blocking. But I’m glad you got your salty antiPats comment out for today. Feel better?

  3. I’m glad he’s not playing. If he’s not 100% they might as well hold him out this week and then give him the extra week with the bye. If he doesn’t come back after the bye week then I would start to be concerned. The Patriots have proved they can still win games without him, although they’re a much better team with him, so you might as well try to get him to 100%

  4. Just get him healthy for the Steelers. If they lose that game, they could be looking at the #3 seed and possibly the #4 if Houston runs the table. The AFC division leaders are riding hot streaks.

Great player! Pats have burned him out and will throw him away soon. It’s the Patriots Way.

Breaking news: Football is a tough physical game, and careers do not go on forever. A good example of this would be Dez Bryant.

  6. Decent folk like Gronk get worn out by all the lying and cheating. Taking a pass on a few games is very commendable of you, Gronk.

  7. Don’t worry about Gronk’s incentives. It’ll all work out in the end. In the meantime, it’s good that he and the team are focusing on his health, not bean counting.

Cam Newton plays with real balls, and he been to the Super Bowl just like Tom Brady

Funny. Pouting on the sideline like a toddler with a towel on his head. Refusing to jump on the ball in the Super Bowl (the only one he’ll ever have been to). Yep, Cam plays with real balls.

  9. NE should have traded him when they got the chance. He should retire and move on with his life. This would allow him to act like a goofball 12 months out of the year. The difference between Kelce and Gronk is easy to see.

  10. Good. With a bye next week and a game they should be able to win without him (lack of Gronk would be no excuse if they didn’t) this week, plus he got rest last week, thats four full weeks of rest and recovery time between games. Let nagging injuries clear up completely instead of continuing to nag. I was actually hoping they would decide to hold him out even if it does mean I have to go do a couple of FF roster moves. Sorry about his playing time incentives but having him back full for end of season and post is more important from a team perspective.

Yeah, Gronk’s got two SB rings!

This guy gets injured more often than any player I’ve ever heard of.

Have you heard of Sammy Watkins?

He’s turned into a massive bust, he is made of glass

His bust will be displayed in the HOF, I think thats what you meant.

  15. He wasn’t getting traded anywhere. He said he would retire if he was traded to any other team. What team gives up anything for a player who’s threatening retirement, let alone an oft injured one? The Patriots did the right thing with the incentive based contract, but I’m fairly certain this season is it for Gronk. I don’t see the Patriots taking the cap hit and I don’t see him agreeing to play for less money.

How many Gronkowski’s does it take to screw in a light bulb?

None. Gronks light fills the room.

The difference is very easy to see. Kelce can’t block.

  19. Tom Brady is in fact super human. You give him a sack of potatoes for runningbacks/receivers/tight ends and he will turn them into twice baked with sour cream chives and bacon bits.

  20. Next man up. Or men. And by that, I’ll assume Patterson showing his versatility, Devlin as the bulldozer, Gordon continuing to impress, and Edelhogan executing as expected. Go Pats.

  21. Out of all the TEs in the league, I definitely want to party with Gronk the most. If I’m hitting the mosh pit though I think I’ll take McDonald with me. If I’m looking for a Thursday ladies nite wingman, I think me and Kelce will roll through it together.

You’re not seriously comparing Cam Newton to Tom Brady are you? If you want to use Rodgers or Brees that’s fine but to use Cam Newton. He’s the biggest crybaby in the history of sports. Not to mention that with the game on the line, in the Super Bowl of all games, he froze like a statue instead of falling on that fumble. That is how Cam Newton will be forever remembered while Brady will be known as the GOAT

Yes, that “massive bust” will be located in Canton!

    NE won the two Superbowls.

Gronk started 10 regular games in 2014 and started 6 regular games in 2016. He DIDN’T play in the Superbowl against Atlanta and NE still came back from a 28-3 deficit.

Pats burned him out. No acknowledgement of contributions, soon to be dumped. Hey, it’s the Patriots Way. Turn em and burn em.

    —————————
What no acknowledgement? Gronk has been widely considered the best TE in the fame for much of his career. Kraft has voluntarily fattened his paycheck at the end of seasons. You might not have wanted to acknowledge it, but the rest of the world did.

Naw, you want Edelman for that.
