Seahawks ground and pound Packers 27-24

Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson dueled throw-for-throw, touchdown-for-touchdown, fist pump-for-fist pump in a game neither team could afford to lose. But the Seahawks made sure it lacked the great finish that has defined games between the teams, running out the final 4:11 to keep Rodgers on the sideline.

Seattle won 27-24 to move to 5-5, while the Packers fell to 4-5-1.

Green Bay, which led 14-3 in the first quarter and 21-17 at halftime, scored only three points and gained only 114 yards in the second half. It was a disappointing and frustrating finish for the visitors.

The third lead change came when Wilson threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Ed Dickson with 5:08 remaining in the fourth quarter. Wilson was 4-for-5 for 73 yards and the touchdown on the drive, though it appeared a 34-yard pass he threw to Tyler Lockett hit the ground as the receiver tried to secure it.

The Packers, with only one timeout, did not challenge it.

Green Bay went three-and-out on its next possession, punted and never saw the ball again. The Seahawks had runs of 5, 8, 4 and 7 yards, picking up two first downs, allowing three kneel downs to close it out.

Wilson went 21-of-31 for 225 yards and two touchdowns. Lockett had five catches for 71 yards, and David Moore four for 57. Doug Baldwin added seven catches for 52 yards and a touchdown.

The Seahawks, though, ran for 173 yards. Chris Carson, who lost a fumble on the first play from scrimmage, finished with 83 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, and Rashaad Penny gained 46 yards on eight carries.

Rodgers went 21-of-30 for 332 yards and two touchdowns. Davante Adams had 10 catches for 166 yards. Aaron Jones had 11 carries for 40 yards for a touchdown and five catches for 63 yards and a touchdown.

Kyler Fackrell had three sacks for the Packers, and Frank Clark had two of the Seahawks’ five sacks.

  1. The problem the Packers face is they have been DESTROYED by Erin’s salary and bloated ego. The Hawks have obviously owned the Pack for years but it’s kinda sad to see how the Pack are utterly disintegrating… so sad.

  2. I am so sad. Too bad for us Packers fans. Watching Aaron decline. He’s lookin old, ain’t he?

  3. Great how our Packers had us believing. But then let us down. Oh well. We have plenty of beer.

  4. A Packer fan here told us GB was improving. Rodgers knee was 80, 85, 90, and now 95% last four games. The Packers are 1-3 in those games. Will they now admit, after 4 wins in 10 games this year, their team simply isn’t very good?

  5. Wouldn’t be a Seahawks/Packers game without a controversial catch. I agree that it wasn’t a catch first of all. But Second of all, McCarthy HAS to challenge that. That’s his fault. Bad coaching will cost you games. Lastly, Rodgers is a magician out there. Can’t believe how accurate he is on 70 yard throws.

  6. Mcarthy has to go. 4 minutes left and your entire defense is hurt, cut, or traded, and you take the ball pit of Aaron’s hands… You don’t challenge that call, you blow two time outs in the third… Terrible

  7. Replays showed that it wasn’t a catch. Too bad the Packers did not challenge the call on the field. Seattle still has not beaten a team with a winning record this season. After next week’s game in Carolina, Seattle will be 5-6

  8. Super surprised McCarthy did not challenge. If he didn’t get good info on the play, maybe somebody besides passive/aggressive ARod wants him gone???

  9. If my coaching career and teams season was on the line. I’d trust my QB (Rodgers)to convert a 4th and 2 more then I’d trust the Green Bay defense to stop the Seattle offense from running out the clock.

  10. The way the Packers played last week, I figured they would finish 11-4-1. Oh well, I’ll be content when they finish a still solid 10-5-1.

  11. Once Seattle took the lead I knew it was over. Rodgers simply does not win these types of games. Seattle wasn’t even a winning team and he can’t pull it off. Oh, but he threw one scramble pass td so I guess he’s the best ever. Wilson is more clutch.

  12. Another failed attempt at a 4th quarter comeback by Aaron Rodgers.

Packers get the ball with over 5 minutes left in the game and go 3 and out. That last pass by Rodgers was a beauty, 2 yard pass and he managed to get it there on the first bounce…

The whole world knew the Seahawks were going to run the ball and that vaunted Packer defense watched Seattle run over 4 minutes off the clock.

  13. I don’t think you could make a good team out of both of these rosters combined. Neither is going anywhere this year.

  14. Another great game by McNutty!

When does this guy never look confused?

Btw a timeout at the end of the first half instead of a running clock- great call!!!

  15. Seattle’s last non downed play was an obvious run with 7 offensive lineman on the field. GB countered with 7 in the box. You set your team up to fail. Poo poo coaching on both sides of the ball for the Packers.

  16. Disappointing game, to say the least.
    Just a terrible 2nd half.

Green Bay got out on top, but just could never extend the lead and put the Seahawks away.
Twice down the stretch Aaron got too greedy looking for the bigger play when he had an easy 1st down on 3rd and short.
And then just a miserable series and a terrible pass on the final 3rd down during their last possession.

Defense allowed far too many yards on the ground all night long.
It’s ridiculous to blame McCarthy for not challenging Lockett’s long completion in the 4th Qt. when there’s simply no clear video evidence until 2 plays later.
    But everyone will.

This team’s a complete mess right now, but clearly not as big of a mess as the Barneys will lead you to believe.
I’m quite sure their diarrhetic stream of consciousness is in overdrive right now.

Congrats to the Hawk fans, this game was just about everything I expected.
It was another wild rollercoaster ride.
    Our contests usually are.
Obviously I would have preferred a different result.
Good luck with the rest of your season.

  17. Mike McCarthy single handedly loses another game. By far, the worst head coach in the NFL. We’ll never live it down if we wait until the Vikings destroy us next week to fire him. Just do it now!

Seahawks D line was collapsing the pocket the entire second half. Rodgers looked lost on anything not a 70 yard pass downfield.

  19. Rodgers has also had quite a few 4Q comebacks thwarted by leading a scoring drive then the defense giving up the winning score, teammate’s fumble, a missed FG, a teammate’s penalty with a 10 second runoff to end the game, etc.

You got those numbers right but in wrong order, 5-10-1 Season ended tonight for the Pack

  21. Seahawks aren’t great but are still a good team. They didn’t have an identity to start the season in 2 close road losses.

Since then, Seattle has lost twice to the Rams by a total of 7 points. Yes a TOTAL of 7. Lost to Chargers by 8 but had the ball inside the 5 on the last play. TD & 2 pt conversion?

Seattle hasn’t beaten anyone but after week 2, their last losses are to teams with a total of 3 losses for the season in Rams 2x and Chargers.

The glass is half full not half empty.

Typical McCarthy coached game. Play to not lose…. and lose

    —————————————————-
Remember when Packer fans were on this board talking about their new improved top 5 Defense? I don’t think it was McCarthy out there missing tackle after tackle. The run D is not very good.

  23. By far, the worst head coach in the NFL.

    ———————————

He’s bad but Vance Joseph makes him look competent. Vance Joseph should not be a head coach in the league while McCarthy at least won a super bowl which shows he knows something. Jason Garrett is also just a clapper and not a coach, he’s the runner up.

  24. @Kam

The Seattle D-Line controlled the line of scrimmage from the onset. I’m just saying I would have let Rodgers try picking up the 1st down instead of trusting that defense. I’m not taking anything away from Seattle’s performance

  25. So all that complaining about running out of the end zone & the other fumble is kind of just gibberish when Aaron does get the chance to pull out a late win he fails anyway. I guess they just saved him the embarrassment of not doing it 3 out of 4 games.

  26. Russell Wilson has a way of doing this against the Packers. Remember that nfcc where he had a horrible game and threw 4 interceptions but then dimed that bomb touchdown in overtime to win the game and go to the Superbowl.

I’m guessing that loss was much more crushing to the Packer fans than tonight.

To me the most impressive thing was how the Hawks finished the game. They just ran the ball for 5 yards a pop and the Packers could do nothing. That OL is beastly atm. It reminds me of when Marshawn would wear a team down all game and then dominate them in the 4th quarter.

Is it lame for me to say as a Seahawks fan that I’m glad Jimmy Graham didn’t do crap? I had a nightmare last night but he got off and got like four touchdowns. So glad that didn’t happen.

Ha ha ha. Rodgers is like 0-37 on fourth quarter comebacks against winning teams. But don’t worry, Seattle wasn’t a winning team so his stats stayed the same against a mediocre team tonight.

The Packers will win this game by double digits.
    *****
Oops. The Packer prognosticators are wrong again. This supposedly good team has only won 4 out of 10 games this year and will once again miss the playoffs.

  30. With both teams around .500 at game time the winner can puff their chest out all they wish, but truth is GB and Sea were going nowhere this year.We are witnessing how a coach loses his team and his QB.It is obvious Aaron has seen enough just like Favre did.Incompetent management will kill the incentive of even the best employees.

  31. Ground and pound is Seattle’s bread and butter.

They seemed to have forgotten that during the first couple of weeks, which is understandable considering that Wilson was the team’s leading rusher last season, but trusting Carson is working well for them.

  32. 3rd down late second half, Rodgers makes a bad throw to the rookie wide out and blames the rookie. He is motioning to make sure everyone thinks it was the rookies fault but it wasn’t.Just a bad throw by Rodgers he saw the WR’s route on the flat. The rookie opened up for the pass and Rodgers lead him on play he didn’t have too and it bounce on the ground. Great leadership, he will complain about play calling by the coach during press conferences after the game. Even though everyone knows Rodgers has veto power at the line. And Aaron will make sure everyone knows it is someone else’s fault in his mind during the game with his gestures following the play result.I am not sure why every team that plays the packers don’t just go after Rodgers. When Seattle came with it they stopped him. when they gave him time he was carving them up.

  33. Hey, I don’t have any favorites here… I’m a Patriots fan first and a football fan second. I knew this game had the potential to be a great one, and damn, it was exciting all the way. Pretty, not so much, but when we have two great quarterbacks with diminished teams going flat out for a needed win? Good football by two rebuilding teams. Very enjoyable game.

  34. This Packer team is far too undisciplined, especially the rookies. Two penalties alone cost them over a hundred yards. That’s just insane. Penalties on ST were a real back-breaker… again. Not that they were bad calls. The calls were okay, the penalties were just extremely boneheaded… again… as well as totally unnecessary… again. That’s too many agains… again

I dunno, maybe it is time to move on from McCarthy… maybe. The aforementioned poor discipline lands squarely at his feet and nowhere else. Not challenging that pass near the end was utterly ridiculous; unconscionable, even. That too wasn’t what I would deem a “bad call.” In real time, it looked like a completion… but that’s what replay is supposed to be for; and, McCarthy had all the time in the world to challenge. If he had called one more run OR screen to the left side, I would have… I would have… well, I don’t know what I’d have done… but I’d have done something unpleasant.

Other than the killer P.I. penalty, I could live with the defensive performance. They got gashed on the ground to the tune of 173 yards but Seattle isn’t the #1 rushing offense in the league for no reason. They were averaging 155 rushing yards per game coming into the night. There were some busted coverages but I’d expect that with so many rookies pressed into action. Pass rush was solid.

  35. We dedicate this game to the late, great first Seahawks Coach and one of the original Ground & Pounders, Mr. Jack Patera. May you rest in peace.

  36. Offense was up and down. Rodgers to veterans was solid. Rodgers to young guys was way too often way out of sync. I can’t really blame the youngsters; it takes time to “get on the same page” with a QB, especially in the scramble drill.

Aaron Jones had a very good game as a receiver coming out of the backfield but had a much tougher time running the ball, especially to the left side. For some reason, McCarthy kept trying to go that way with the play calls.

All in all, a disappointing loss. Seattle was the better team tonight.

  37. just remember the packers are a Kyle Fuller dropped gimme INT, Daniel Carlson shank gimme FG and a terrible def holding flag against the 49ers on 3rd and forever from being 2-8. Let that sink in.

  38. Iffy calls aside, this game ultimately came down to 2 plays. Aaron scrambling instead of checking down to (a wide open) Aaron Jones late in the game in the red zone. Would’ve been a first and goal and possibly a walk in TD. The most damning play was GB’s last punt of the game. 4th and 2 with no timeouts and your top two run stoppers out of the game, you have to put the game in Rodgers’ hands and try to get the first there.

I had no dogs in the fight as a Texans fan but McCarthy may just be a worse late game play caller than OBrien and it’s a wonder why he’s still got a job in GB.

  39. Both teams look like they’re ready for the playoffs. Some players even bought new big screen televisions for the occasion.

  40. welp. cleaning house this off-season. we should just trade McCarthy to the Browns and let Aaron call the plays. not even joking.

  41. Mike McCarthy once again out coached, people talk about how Tomlin is constantly underachieving McCarthy has not helped Rodgers at all in the way of forming a team. What a waste of such a great talent.

  42. Buck and Aikman with the packers slant all night. They do it every time they do a packers game. Talk about Rodgers for 2 1/2 hours of the game regardless of the score. Rodgers threw a 11 yard pass and they both went on and on.It was a 11 yards gain, these two are terrible. Aikman has been away from the game too long. He adds nothing Troy comes off as lazy and unprepared. And he might be suffering the effects of head injuries.

  43. I think we all can see the Packers, who already relied more on 1 player than any team in NFL history, are on elevator to the basement. Rogers isn’t the player he once was and isn’t capably anymore of singlehandedly putting the team on his back. Throw in a head coach who doesn’t seem to be able to adapt to a changing league and the Packers will soon be a forgotten team in the NFL.

  44. Aaron Rodgers should file a lawsuit against the Packers for wasting his career
    =====

He shouldn’t have signed that new contract and LEFT this dumpster fire.

    ——————-
Well, if so much of the cap didn’t go to his contract, they might afford a little more talent around him. With the way he scowls and stares after any other player misses a catch or anything else, no free agents will want to play on offense with him unless they seriously overpay. So, that leaves only draft and develop, and let them go before they cost too much, which doesn’t leave much room for error.

Under the new rule, it WAS a catch, that’s why it wasn’t challenged. And after Sunday, we can start calling your team the 2-and-Niners.

  47. Few would contend Russell Wilson is a better passer, or quarterback, than Aaron Rodgers—-most of the time. But when the chips are down and things aren’t going well, Aaron Rodgers turn pouty and preoccupied with mistakes, and Russell Wilson keeps plugging until things turn around. Sometimes they don’t, but often they do with spectacular results for the Seahawks.

  48. Iffy calls aside, this game ultimately came down to 2 plays. The Packers should have scored an additional TD just because I say so and the Seahawks should have not scored one of their TDs just because I say so.

  49. SO how’s that “ALL WE NEED IS RODGERS” mentality working out this year Pack fans?

    Pretty good huh?

  50. Well then, it painfully clear that every NFL player who’s ever had the displeasure of suiting up in that putrid purple, should sue the Vikings for wasting all of their careers.

  51. What’s it say about the reffing when the Powers that Be(Head of Referee’s) gives out 3(potential) challange flags because they KNOW their refs WILL screw up so many calls? HMMMMMMMMM!!!

    SAD, SAD, SAD!

Did you see in 2014 when Rodgers led a 4Q comeback against the 12-4 Cowboys in the playoffs on an injured leg? Keep telling yourself Aaron Rodgers has 0 wins when trailing in the 4Q against winning teams though. We dont want no facts to get in the way of a good insult.

  55. It seems to me that there is still something not right with Aaron’s shoulder. Like he’s able to crank up the long pass and muscle through it but somethings catching when he’s trying to throw the short stuff with less velocity. That last 3rd & 2 one hopper was a prime example.

  56. Enjoy it Seahawk fans. I guarantee this is your last win of the year. If not I’ll eat Bart Simpson’s shorts.

  57. I loved it in the SB when Wilson threw the losing INT and the Seahawks collectively had a childish meltdown. Did yall see the replay of Butler wiping that smirk off Sherman’s face and turning to tears? That was funny. Or when Irvin and Bennett ganged up on Gronk only to both get body slammed by him? That was even funnier.
