Adam Thielen, Bill Belichick exchange pleasantries

Vikings receiver Adam Thielen didn’t speak to Patriots coach Bill Belichick after the game. The two exchanged only a few words during the game, but it was enough.

After officials ruled Latavius Murray gained a yard on fourth-and-one with 8:34 remaining in the game, Patriots defensive back Patrick Chung went down to the ground. Thielen obviously didn’t believe Chung was injured but instead faking an injury to buy time for the Patriots to look at a replay.

When Belichick threw the challenge flag, Thielen approached the sideline screaming.

“That’s bullish-t,” Thielen yelled.

“I just thought the play was cheap,” Thielen said afterward, via video from Tom Curran of NBC Sports Boston. “I wasn’t directing it toward him. I just thought the play was cheap. I let my emotions get the best of me, because it’s a smart football play. If you are in that situation, why not? It’s not cheating, because there’s no rule against from a guy going down. I don’t know if he was hurt or not. He might have been hurt. That’s fine. It is what it is. Just interesting timing for a guy to go down when it’s a close play.”

As an official escorted Thielen back toward the Vikings huddle, Belichick told the receiver to “shut the f–k up.” Patriots linebacker Kyle Van Noy also said something to Thielen.

Thielen appeared unfazed by Belichick’s suggestion.

“No offense taken,” Thielen said. “It’s football. There’s emotions. He can think what he wants to think about me. It doesn’t really change how I’m going to go play the game. He can hate me all he wants, and I’m going to still be the same person I am and try to go out and do my best and I’m going to try to compete every play.”

The Vikings won the challenge but lost the game, and Thielen had five catches for 28 yards and a touchdown.

  1. The NFCN continues to implode. Whichever garbage team wins the division will get bounced in the first round. Going all in for Cousins and Mack looks like a great idea now.

  2. It was BS that they lost both challenges. Rudolph bobbled it and dropped it COMPLETING THE PROCESS OF THE CATCH and Murray was stopped WAY short of the line to gain. Oh well, better to lose the challenges and win the game than the other way around.

  3. I love Thielen but his big mouth is going to cost us 15 yards sooner or later. Shut up and play.

  4. Apparently Thielen is clueless. Even the dumbest head coach in the league would instruct a player to fake an injury to buy more time to look at the replay. As it was, they blew the call anyway.

  5. Vikings should have done the same thing on the Gronk Fumble. They scored a TD 2 plays later and went up 17-10. He fumbled!

  6. It was fun watching Thielen instantly doom his team. Going to be a long dogsled ride home and, much like visitor experiences in Gillette, the view never changes.

  7. I wish the league would actually watch the film closely, with the possible fake injury timeout leading up to the challenge. The Patriots should be fined, if the video footage shows that the intent was blatant! The reason that the “ten second” run off occurs, is exactly because of this behavior! If the Patriots want a time out, they need to take one, like any other time of the game!

It’s just unreal how Goodell wants these refs to try to help NE’s opponent with a brainwshing Perreria on the broadcast.

Edelman was mauled at the 1 before the ball got there and it’s a “bang/bang” play when the guy spun his hip. It’s a texbook PI.

The Rudolph play was questionable as he was bobbling it as the 2nd foot came down. If that was a NE receiver, it’s incomplete. That, I know.

And the 4th down? Appalling cheating attempt by Goodell. He was a clear 1/2 yard short in live action and on the replay.

Anyone claiming NE got calls here is a liar. The phantom holding on Thuney was hilarious too, just as the constant missed illegal hands to the face all night like it always is vs NE’s def front week to week.

  9. I’d say “stay classy” to BB, but someone has to have class in the first place to say that to them.

    Pats doing something morally questionable?
    ———————————————-

It isn’t morally questionable to show a team and a player they are not ready to run with the big dogs. Heck it might even be doing them a favor.

  11. They aren’t cheating though. It is, in no way, cheating when a player falls and seems to be hurt. Adam simply let the fact that they let the Pats win by more than 10 points affect him in that way.

  12. I think Thielan is just trying to fish for a compliment ,,Bill don’t hate him Bill dosent even know who he is !

  13. Not only did they not make it on 4th down, but the spot on third down was about a yard to much also. And they complain about the refs. But yes, the refs are terrible.

  14. Thielen has a big mouth. That’s what’s typical. We have to remember he ASSUMED Chung was taking it!

  15. Shut up Thief-land, you nothing but a late-night big mouth
with a belly full of booze, and dressing room full of purple
dinosaurs… you are not match for the Evil Emperor…, go
    home and call your mommie..

  16. “It’s not cheating.” Lol the other times it was just misunderstandings. Cheating and Patriots go hand in hand.

  17. What do you expect from BB and NE hater Tom Curran? Did Peter King have something to say about it. BB hasn’t talked with him for about 12 years.

  18. Go back to work on your TD celebrations. Your on the road, losing the game and your taking smack to a man who has 7 Super Bowl rings. Stay in your lane son.

  19. refs helping the cheating bastards as usual. tammy brady gets excited over 1000 rushing yards in 19 FRIKIN SEASONS!!! tammy brady is toast after they get pummeled in the super bowl by the rams or saints.

    HOORAH!!!!!

  20. That outbust was just Thielen imploding, for he amassed a mere 28yds and frustrated all game. And Belichick was right to challenge that play – looking at the bodies and arms it was clear where the ball must be – half a yard shy – but refs couldn’t see the ball. The other BS call was that sideline catch where Vikes didn’t keep hold of the ball as he went out of bounds before completing the process by making a football move. But even the refs couldn’t stop old man Brady throwing over 300yds against what was the NFL’s 3rd-ranked D.

  21. “They scored a TD 2 plays later and went up 17-10. He fumbled!”

What the one the replay clearly showed him down by contact before the ball came out? No he did not fumble SMH

  22. Gronk was grabbed and held, ball swatted and nothing was called. It is what it is. Pats won anyway. And haters. Patriots are the cheated. 2 SB after the sham Deflategate and you guys are still singing your sad refrain. It will be nice if the mediocre Pats this year ends up playing in the SB. That should give you haters something to get your sluggish blood going. You direly need a life that the Pats are supplying you.

  23. Anyone claiming NE got calls here is a liar. The phantom holding on Thuney was hilarious too, just as the constant missed illegal hands to the face all night like it always is vs NE’s def front week to week

Wow! When the Vikings were shooting for the end zone at the end of the first half, and the Patriots defender clearly had his hand on the receivers shoulder, holding him down, and preventing him from jumping for the ball, it was obvious that the referees were not going to call anything….Not sure what game you were watching…..

  24. Beating the Patriots and the refs at home is nearly impossible. Good on Thielen for calling Bellidouche out.

Now we will get a boring Pats-Saints Super Bowl which the refs will help the Pats win again.

  25. Oh, but that cute little kindergarten endzone celebration was so fabulous, wasn’t it? I’m sure BB was entertained.

Come to think of it, it was kind of the turning point in the game wasn’t it?

  29. thielan was an absolute disgrace today. as a vikings fan, i am embarrassed. Thielan has no place to go after BB like he did. He just hurt his reputation for life and i have a feeling this will haunt the vikings as long as thielan is there. you’re down by 14 points and you yell at the greatest coach of all time? that’s a huge character flaw.

How many yards did he have again, 28??? That too is “wicked funny “!!!

  34. Cmon, even the most avid Vikings fan knew the Vikings were going to lose this game. When was the last time Kirk Cousins beat a team with a winning record?

  35. I guess people change their minds. Such as:

For everyone else, upset alert…., best bet….take the Vikings plus 5.5

  36. Haters say that the officials always make calls in favor of the Patriots when they play at home. Well, they blew the call on both challenges, especially the “phantom” first down. Murray was stuffed immediately, and when Belichick threw the challenge flag,Mr. Thielen had a hissy fit over it. NO WAY was that a first down. I liked Thielen as a player until today, when he showed that he is a baby and has butter fingers when it matters most.

  42. Stay classy Thielen you baby… Pats fans were thankful that they went to you for the next several plays where you never came close to a 1st!

  43. Jeez, this happens every week, but when NE does it, it’s some kind of cheating conspiracy. And you really have to be fanboy to think that he wasn’t clearly short of the line to gain. Terrible failure by the refs.

  44. Wasn’t even close to a 1st down, how the refs AND the the replay officials screwed that up is ridiculous. Then Thielen gets his big nose into the Patriots sideline? Just hush up consider and yourself lucky that the refs blew that call.

  45. BB always tries to take away the opposing offense’s best weapon. Mr Thielen should feel good BB views him as Minnesota’s best weapon. And the Pats shut him down. You could see he was their number 1 focus.

But seriously did the Vikings think they could compete? That game ended exactly as we all knew it would. Kirk & the Vikes aren’t beating the Patriots in NE…..

  46. The Pats are great. When you are spotted nearly a half season worth of victories by being in the AFC East, you should be.

The Vikings aren’t in the AFC East.

  48. These Pats trolls talking about Thielen being soft and over-rated are hilarious. He was being doubke-teamed all night as Diggs was banged up, and he still beat them deep. If Cousins doesn’t overthrow the ball on that play, it’s 6 points! How about Brady begging for a flag when he threw it to the end zone and Harris knocked the ball away. Players are emotional! It does’t make them any worse or better as a player. Like you jackwagons could do any better LOL

  49. What do you think the Giants did to the Patriots throughout that second Super Bowl. Brady would go into hurry up mode and move chains and a Giant would go down grabbing a leg. That usually stopped the drive.

Keep talking pats fans. Your time is rapidly approaching. 6-10

    ——

How many years have you been wishing for that and it hasn’t happened??? Most of your life?

These routine victories still taste great. Especially in December when the Patriots always turn it up a notch.

You’ll just have to keep waiting and hoping I guess…good luck with that strategy.

  51. Here is the thing about Edelman getting mauled at the line… too bad.

If teams like the Pats want to rub out DBs by using the 1 yard rule then they have to deal with those corners being physical within that 1 yard.

Brady fairly takes advantage of that gray area, the Vikings did the same.

  52. As a Vikings fan, the refs were horrible the whole game. I can think of 4 or 5 calls they blew with respect to both teams. Let the guys just play. This isn’t the NBA, stick your whistles back in your pockets.

  53. Sadly I am not surprised that this thread is going to have over 100 comments over Adam Thielen throwing a tantrum on a scenario that has happened in probably hundreds of NFL games in the last five decades.

Fortunately for Thielen and the Vikings the refs still blew the call. Unfortunately for Thielen and the Vikings the Pats are, and were, the better team.

  54. Let’s not pretend the Patriots are the first team to fake injuries. When Chip Kelly was coach of the Eagles, the Redskins created the blueprint for slowing down the Chip Kelly offense by faking injuries. As an Eagles fan, it was maddening to watch, but it was brilliant. Why not do it if there’s no rule against it?

  55. There was no faked injury. Chung was on the ground at the end of the play sure but was up dairly quickly, and that was before anyone knew there was going to be anything to challenge. At that point both teams knew he had been stopped short of the first down and no one was expecting the refs to call it any other way. The Vikings were as surprised by that as the Pats. Both teams had already sent their personnel in and then had to switch back. Theilen was just auditioning.

  56. Thielen is a good player but he’s also a typical Vikings player — a whiner. He was crying to the officials all game.

  57. Adam they pretty much took you out of the game. Yeah you caught a td but It seemed you were more interested in the celebration than getting open!

I’m a Viking Fan Bill was right! Now get open

  58. I am amazed at the level of hate by sport fans here today. Envy is the greatest compliment one can receive from an opponent short of beating that opponent.

Now the haters come out in droves because the month of Dec is here and we all know what that means… the separation of the real teams and the also-ran’s and the just plain cooked and done want to be’s ( Packers)

In the month of Dec there will be no more 100+ point games…. defense will start to come back into play.

The real teams will begin the push to the actual playoffs and not the mid season predictions… go back and look at where NE was placed game 8….verses today

Oh well.. as much as you all want to hate, it is telling year in and year out the Patriots rise to the top and once again will be in the hunt for a super bowl.

And I for one will sit back and enjoy a warm cup of hot coco….while the rest of you all just go on and hate and wine

    Now comes real football

  59. Honestly….as a Vikings fan this is getting so frustrating…..how in the hell are the receivers and the quarterback not on the same page in week 11? If they spent half of the time on execution that they do on practicing touchdown celebrations, they would be undefeated

Your team was given gifts all night with phsntom penalties and overly generous spots.

The best was Edelman mauled at the 1 beofore the ball got there with no flag. Love Perreira awkward backing the officiating, too. And, you still only got 10 points.

So, you are approving of the penalty not called simply because of a delayed pick that every team does?

You act like only NE does a pick play at the line.

If they felt the pick was a penalty (it wasn’t), they should have called it.

PI is PI. The defender was there and tackling Edelman, not allowing him to even try to catch the ball.

The awkward “bang bang” argument by liars Aikman and Perreira was a joke.

  62. The officials make their share of bad calls, that’s for sure! But I’d bet that, over the course of a season, the calls for and against teams would probably average out.

This is really simple. Kirk Cousins cannot beat teams with winning records. He runs up tremendous stats against losing teams, and plays like he did yesterday against winning teams.

  67. “The Rookie from Maryland #27 Jackson for New England commits DPI in the endzone TWICE on the same drive …. refs call neither.”

I don’t think you understand what DPI is. On the first play Thielen intentionally ran into the Pats player trying to draw the DPI since the DB was better positioned and might well have gotten an INT had he not. If anything that was OPI.

The 2nd one there was no DPI either, just good play by the defender.

  68. The real ? Is what was that sorry td celebration? That’s the dumbest thing I’ve seen since the Texans wore those god awful varsity jackets years back.

  69. Vikes can’t help their OC is a moron. Hey, we’re gashing ’em for 9 yds a pop with Cook. Better pass 20 more times and play right into their hands.
