Chiefs not worried about Patrick Mahomes running

In their first game after releasing leading rusher Kareem Hunt, the Chiefs let Patrick Mahomes run more than he had all season.

But Chiefs coach Andy Reid said that was a function of the Raiders defense, rather than a desire to cut Mahomes loose to make plays with his legs.

The MVP candidate ran nine times for 52 yards Sunday, as they chopped up the carries with Spencer Ware and Damien Williams and Tyreek Hill. Mahomes hadn’t carried more than six times in a game this year, and while some were scrambles, Reid said there were a few designed runs in there.

“Some of those were off the (run-pass option) stuff and the reads,” Reid said, via Lynn Worthy of the Kansas City Star. “Then he had a couple just by the way they were playing. They were pushing towards the RPO stuff and they created seams there, so we were able to attack those when we had a true pass on. . . .

“They were good adjustments, and he’s not taking big hits on those. He’s getting down, and we’re getting out of bounds — which is important. I’m not too worried about that. There are going to be games when you’ve got to do that. That’s what’s available, and you’ve got to take advantage of that. I’ve got confidence in the other guys, the other two running backs, that they can play. I don’t have a problem there.”

Combined, the Chiefs ran 30 times for 174 yards against the Raiders, who are next to last in the league in rush defense. As the competition improves, it will be interesting to see if Reid’s still as open to letting his most important offensive player take off running.

  1. Umm, no, it’s a function of a D not seeing Ware or now West as the same kind of threat as Hunt.

A good defense knows Mahomes rolls right constantly, so to defend him, is the way you try to defend Roethlisberger, taking away movement to his right, keeping him in the pocket.

So, this means setting the edge every single down and then trying t collapse the pocket.

Sounds simple, which it is and it won’t work all the time,. but that’s how you limit the Chiefs from scoring. That and keeping their offense off the field with longer TD drives.

Chiefs are ripe for the picking with that D and the loss of Hunt is huge.

  2. Haha love all the Pats fans trying to point out how the Chiefs are vunerable. Pats fans need to be worried about the beat down the Steelers are going to give the Pats next week which will all but kill their chances of home field advantage and mean they will have to take their 20 point loss in Arrowhead during the playoffs and then go home.

    LOL

The Steelers. The only way the crap Steelers D can handle NE at this point is if Goodell pulls funny business, which after Pitt whining almost weekly into Goodell about the reds, is entirely possible.

NE knows it has to beat the refs and the opponent, so that is nothing new, but Pitt is a hot mess right now.

  4. Running nine times against the Raiders is not the same as running nine times against the Ravens. I think Andy knows that.

Speaking of “that D” the Chiefs put up a 40-burger on “that D” in your house. Expect to flip the score if you make it to KC for the AFCCG.

  6. I think the same headline was published in 2012….it went something like this.

“Redskins not worried about RGIII’s running”

When was the last time Mike Tomlin found a way for his team to beat BB and the Patriots?

As a Dolphins fan I would like nothing more but bet the house on the Patriots against the Steelers. Everyone already knows how it ends.

It’s too early in the morning for irrational conspiracy theories.

  9. Not good when the QB is your leading rusher for the game. Teams will def game plan around the fact Hunt is no longer a factor in the run game but even more so in the pass game. The defensive pressure is bound to ramp up on MaHomes, Kelce & Tyreek Hill unless another back can step up and create the production Hunt did.

  10. Mahomes running that much was a product of a gameplan that did not anticipate being without Kareem Hunt. You can bet that Andy will have a gameplan that fits both Ware & Williams, even West’s skillset. The running is a good thing, its the end of the run that Mahomes needs to be concerned about, and lately he seems to be getting out of bounds and avoiding contact more than earlier in the year.

yeah, real irrational. Why don’t have another clear call on replay that shows a play favors NE, only to be reviewed at 345 Park Ave, and arrogantly be upheld or over-turned to cheat my team?

    My goodness.

How do you review a clear call that was missed and still uphold it, while changing the rules during the game to match it, for it not be seen as cheating by Goodell?

Pats fans for years now, certainly since Godell was caught cheating with Deflategate, are well aware of the attitude and myth that NE “gets the calls”, when in fact, it’s been the complete opposite, as NE winning Sbs is bad for business.

Everyone with even a GED knows it at this point.

Goodell is willing to protect the Chiefs and lie with Kareem Hunt over it.

    Are you honestly this daft?

    “40 burger”?

    Sounds great, Millennial.

If you’re relying on a game in Sept or Oct, you’ve got a VERY rude awakening coming your way.

    Very rude awakening. lol

Are you new to the last 15 years of the NFL and the Pats?
