James Conner is out for Week 14

As the Steelers try to reverse a two-game losing streak against a team that has won two games all year, they won’t have running back James Conner.

Despite prior claims and reports downplaying the injury as a contusion, Conner has an ankle injury. Coach Mike Tomlin told reporters on Tuesday that Conner won’t play on Sunday at Oakland.

The Steelers should be able to defeat the Raiders with Jaylen Samuels, Stevan Ridley, and/or Trey Edmunds carrying the load. But the Steelers will need Conner for Week 15, when the Patriots come to town.

Conner, who became the starter once Le'Veon Bell held out into the season, has 909 rushing yards (4.5 per carry), 467 receiving yards, and 13 total touchdowns.

The Steelers have four losses on the year, three of which have come against teams from the AFC West: Kansas City, Denver, and the L.A. Chargers. The Steelers will finish their tour of the division when Tomlin faces his former Tampa boss, Jon Gruden, on Sunday.

  1. Does anyone that isn’t a hard core steelers fanboy that believes the steelers aren’t toast at this point?

  2. Steelers will lay an egg. Ben has only won once in California and he played against the raiders and 49ers when they were both bad.

I dont think they are toast since they are still in control of the division. If they go 3-1 down the stretch they will likely win the division. If they go 2-2 or worse, they may he out of the post season.

  4. Jaylen Samuels only has 31 career rushing yards and Ridley won’t scare anyone in 2018. They will be long shots against New England and New Orleans if Conner’s not able to play. It’s not just the rushing yards, but keeping the defense honest with a competent running game.

  5. Chuckie is tanking the season to grab a high draft pick for next April. The Steelers will win just by showing up.

  6. Rest up Conner – you’ve done great things for BOTH of my fantasy teams – 1 of which has a bye this week anyway!

  7. The Steelers should be able to defeat the Raiders with Jaylen Samuels, Stevan Ridley, Trey Edmunds, and/or the fat dude selling hot dogs in the upper deck of the stadium, carrying the load.

There – fixed it for you.

(But you’re right – they’ll need Conner against the Patriots)

  8. They are in a free fall. Tomlin is a constant deer in the headlights, Ben is old and can’t move and they are ripe for the picking.

Will probably be the last home game in Oakland vs the Steelers before Vegas.

The Pats await and will be ready.

  9. @jman967:

So you think they are could possibly beat the patriots and saints? The last (and only time in their history) the steelers ever beat the patriots in a meaningful game was when Kordell Stuart was the QB. And the idea that they could beat a team like the saints must be a joke because you don’t think anyone is going to believe that do you?

Could the steeler limp into the playoffs? Its not completely beyond the realm of possibility. Do they have any shot at all to compete for a championship even if they somehow squeak in? No, they are toast.

  10. As soon as PIttsburgh lost that game to S.D. I said they will be lucky if they make the playoffs.
They never play well against the Raiders, that is no guaranteed win. They follow that up with NE and the Saints.
I bet the Bungles even give them a game.

They have no tie breakers, they’ve lost to practically every team in playoff contention.

Tomlin needs to go. One playoff win in 5 going on 6 years. The one they got was a total implosion by the Bungles.
Tomlin teams are never ready to play 4 quarters, they underachieve and are undisciplined. Time to say bye Mike

  11. that’s bad news for Conner he’s been playing lights out for the steelers all season hopefully its just a minor ankle injury and is only out this next game Samuels is doing a good job, will be interesting to see what Edmunds can do

Won’t happen. The Rooneys and their fans want to back that “Rooney Rule” garbage and will cut off their nose to spite their face.

They play in a weak division with Cleveland, the Bungles and a rebuilding Ravens team, and they have veery dumb and immature players.

Tomlin is dumb, so he doesn’t want to be exposed by players or coaches smarter than he is.

The facade die off a long time ago. They wouldn’t even have the ring in 2008 with Bernard Pollard taking Brady out.

  13. It should be three straight losses. They should have lost in Jacksonville.

The league sent them to Oakland for a weak out of division game before getting to host the Patriots, again, while sending the Patriots to Pittsburgh at the end of a 4 out of 5 games on the road, immediately after their annual game in Miami, which is always a tough division game. Last season the Patriots went into Pittsburgh for the third of three straight road games. Seems like the game is in Pittsburgh EVERY year. A lesser man might think there was some sort of conspiracy to aid the Steelers over the hump, but not me. It’s all pure coincidence.

I’m sure they will be all jacked up for Week 15.

  14. @Sardo.
Yes. You can talk history but this years team is capable of beating either the Pats or Saints. I would give the nod to them winning against the Pats over the Saints, but even if they lose both and go 2-2, they could still win the division outright. You’re horribly loaded question to start the post off aside, they are a very good team. Let’s not act like the Chargers getting 14 points off terrible calls did not affect the outcome of Sunday nights game. Your toast comment is weighted solely on the outcome of that game, and that isnt a solid foundation to base this team on. Any NFL fan with a sense of reason can see that. (Like my loaded comment?)

  15. Probably fan boy optimism, but the Raiders were surprisingly feisty last week, Steelers/Raiders games tend to be weird and the Steelers could easily be looking past the Raiders toward New England the week after. I dunno, just have a feeling this could be the upset of the week.

  16. Conner is an average RB disguised as a great one because of that offensive line. His presence is not and never will be the difference between a Steelers win or loss.

  17. The Steelers rarely play good in Oakland, so it would not be shocking to see them win by the skin of their teeth, or outright lose the game. Tomlin should be on the hot seat, but, come year’s end, I would imagine they will make Butler the scapegoat, even though he is implementing the defensive guru Tomlin’s master plan.

  18. The Raiders have dominated the Steelers all time, beating them for 15 out of 28 times, that is complete ownership… Raiders by 14 and you can book it

15 our of 28 is a little better than 53%. You call that “complete ownership”?

Guy who roots for a team that benefits yearly from playing in the AFC East calling another division “weak.” Can’t make it up.

Wow, a Pats fans conjuring up conspiracy theories about how the NFL is somehow out to benefit someone else or screw the Pats? There’s something you don’t see every 3 minutes.

  22. “Tomlin is dumb”

I would trust the opinion of people who A) know him personally B) have worked with him and C)know more about football than anyone posting here (Dungy, Marinelli, Monte Kiffin). Those people know him to be intelligent, articulate and a great motivator. Have to agree the team is undisciplined at times and his in-game management lapses at times, but his record with a winning percentage is around 66% over almost 12 seasons. what active coach with more than 2 seasons under their belt has won more? There’s only one, everyone knows he’s in NE (and his winning percentage is only 2% points higher). Of course the SB victories trump everything, but Tomlin has coached 2 teams to a SB and has one victory (no, it wasn’t Cowhers team…Cowher coached, Colbert drafted). The notion that he’s not been fired because the Rooney family doesn’t want the Rooney rule to look like a failure is ridiculous and kind of offensive. tokenism leading to an NFL coach keeping aHC job for 12 years despite being dumb? C’mon. At least come up with something believable. That’s a bigger joke than insisting the refs are intentionally cheating for certain teams at Goodell’s behest. Jeez

  23. Excited to see what Samuels can do with a week of practice with the first team. I was impressed with him during his college playing days. Good speed for his size and probably the most versatile back on the team.

Yeah, me. They can certainly beat NE and getting to the dance is not a big lift. NE lost to worse teams, this season. Conner was proof they didn’t need Bell. They don’t need Conner either. They have a QB and WR that can take over a game. Let’s see if they will.

BUT, every time I watch NE play Miami in Miami from Irish Kevin’s on Duval St they lose. Guess where I’m headed on Friday 🙂
