Jaylen Samuels plans to “keep doing the same thing” this week

Running back Jaylen Samuels is set to play a different role for the Steelers this weekend.

Samuels has appeared in 11 games this season, but he’s only seen 56 snaps on offense as James Conner has been the lead dog in the Pittsburgh backfield. Samuels is set to see a lot more playing time against the Raiders this weekend because Conner will miss the game with an ankle injury.

According to Samuels, the change in circumstances won’t lead to a change in the way he prepares during the week.

“I’ve always got to prepare the same way, because you never know what will happen,” Samuels said, via ESPN.com. “I had to be 100 percent prepared like I was going to start. Keep doing the same thing I’ve been doing the last couple of weeks.”

Stevan Ridley and Trey Edmunds may also figure into the mix for Pittsburgh this weekend, but Samuels has been the clear No. 2 in recent weeks and Ben Roethlisberger looked his way in the passing game last Sunday. Given the fact that the Steelers have been throwing on more than two-thirds of their snaps, that should lead to plenty of chances for Samuels to show his worth.

  1. Once again the Steelers have left themselves vulnerable at the RB position due to an injury to their top back. They never seem to learn from mistakes.
That said, it would not surprise if Samuels had a big game this week against Oakland.

  2. No disrespect to the Raiders, but the Steelers should be able to beat the Raiders without Connor. They might have to pass over 50 times but the Steelers have the talent, and need to get the job done this week. Minimize the dumb mistakes like turnovers and penalties, and who knows they might even get lucky enough to actually GET a turnover themselves for a change! Losing is not an option! There is no tomorrow!

  3. The only thing he needs to prepare for is blowing another 16 point lead at halftime and losing the game.

  4. I like what Jaylen brings to the table. Shouldn’t miss a beat when he steps in for Conner this weekend. Defense is where the steelers need to step it up. They played well for weeks and played horrible in the second half last week which imo cost them the game.

  5. Samuels was outstanding in college and in the NFL preseason. Plus he has contributed during the season. I bet he does great!
