Coming home to join Raiders “means a lot” to C.J. Anderson

Signing with the Raiders gives running back C.J. Anderson a chance to get some more work in a season that saw him play a very limited role with the Panthers before they released him almost a month ago.

It also gives him a chance to play for the team he grew up rooting for. Anderson grew up in Vallejo, California and his mom would wear a Raiders jacket over his Broncos jersey while attending games between the teams when Anderson played in Denver.

Anderson referenced Marshawn Lynch making a similar move to come back home while discussing what joining the Raiders means to him.

“Just like ‘Money,’ there’s a bunch of kids who see it and look up,” Anderson said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. “There’s a bunch of kids who look up and get excited that you’re back home playing for the hometown team. That means a lot. You get some of those kids in the inner city that we’re trying to [show] that you have an opportunity to do anything. And if you can do it at home, why not?”

The Raiders cited Doug Martin‘s knee injury as a reason why they reached out to Anderson, but Martin was a full participant in practice on Wednesday so it’s not clear how the work will be divvied up in Anderson’s first game with his hometown team.

A few years ago the Patriots were hot after Anderson during free agency. He opted to sign elsewhere. However, one must wonder what would have happened if he had chosen New England instead.

  2. I think the real reason we signed a RB is last week all 3 RB’s we played all had 1 fumble lost in our 7 pt loss to the Chiefs. Not saying Oak would’ve won but our offense was moving ball easily vs KC and the 3 lost fumbles lost is the game. I wonder what was the last time in an NFL game all 3 RB’s on a team all lost 1 fumble each in the same game.

  3. Its December and you have 2 wins. Whats the point of signing a has-been? You give a young kid a shot at this point. This is why all of the hire Gruden hire Cowher hire Holmgren hire Dungy people the last ten years need to pay attention. They dont have the fire anymore

    ^^^ This.

But a nice story on Anderson coming back home to his childhood team.

  5. isn’ it sad a city thas has turned out some of the best atheletes ever…such as Bill Russell, Ricky Henderson, Gary Payton, Joe Morgan, Beastmode, Paul Pierce, Jason Kidd, Dennis Eckersley, John Brodie, Damian Lillard, Maurice Jones Drew, Andre Ward, Frank Robinson, McArthur Lane, etc….is losing the Raiders, and the Warriors.

  6. Good for CJ. Was hoping to see him with more touches here in Carolina, but get the reason why he didn’t. He seems to have worked hard ever since the Panthers signed him and was productive the few times he did get the ball. Happy he’ll have a chance to show what he’s got with the Raiders.

  7. I’ve really liked the way doug martin and jalen richard have played this season. With thatsaid, neither have been able provide those explosive plays that are needed in todays NFL. My guess is we keep jalen and we get some young legs via the draft. Chris warren looked like the real deal before he went down. Raiders have looked good at times, and have 3 1st round draft picks this year. The raiders will turn it around in a hurry! #BOSA #GREEDY

  8. Washington, Richard and Martin are RBs with about the same size and skill set. Richard seems to the the best pass receiver out of the group. All about 5’8 and 200 lbs. They need a bigger RB to be able to make short distant and Goal Line situations. Those 3 RBs gets stopped in their tracks vs Short yardage and GL situations.

At 27 lets see what Anderson has left. He can’t hurt the situation. 3 years now and these smaller guys have fumbled time and time again. They cannot protect the ball with more usage. Extemely redundant with these 3 RBs. Martin shouldn’t be back. Raiders need to decide if they wish to keep Richard or Washington.
