Derrick Henry romps for 238 yards, four TDs as Titans roll to 30-9 win over Jaguars

Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry rushed for a franchise record 238 yards and four touchdowns in carrying his team to a 30-9 drubbing of the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night.

Henry’s 99-yard touchdown run in the second quarter that saw massive stiff arms of A.J. Bouye, Leon Jacobs and Myles Jack set the table for Henry’s huge day on the ground. The 99-yard touchdown matches Tony Dorsett’s 99-yard touchdown run against the Minnesota Vikings in 1983.

Henry surpassed Chris Johnson’s 228-yard game against the Jaguars in 2009 for the most productive rushing performance in franchise history.

Ryan Succop‘s 33-yard field goal to end the first half was the only other scoring output for the Titans in the game as Henry did all the heavy lifting.

A 3-yard Henry run game the Titans the early 7-0 lead.

A muffed punt from Cole Batson led to a safety that got the Jaguars on the board late in the first quarter. However, Jacksonville’s offense would do nothing to add to the effort until the game was well out of reach.

Henry’s 99-yard romp made it a 13-2 game after a missed extra point and Succop’s field goal game Tennessee a 16-2 lead at half. Henry had 129 yards on six carries at the break and continued to pour it on in the second half.

A 16-yard touchdown run made it a 23-2 advantage midway through the third quarter. After Cody Kessler lost a fumble on a sack, Henry’s 54-yard touchdown on the ensuing play made it a 30-2 lead with still 20 minutes left to play and Henry already over the 200-yard mark.

Dede Westbrook would score on a 7-yard pass from Kessler on a fourth down late in the third to serve as Jacksonville’s only offensive points of the game.

Henry becomes the third running back this season to eclipse the 200-yard plateau, joining Todd Gurley (208 vs. Denver) and Isaiah Crowell (219 vs. Denver) in consecutive weeks in October.

While the Titans path to a playoff spot isn’t straightforward, a loss to Jacksonville would have put the idea on life support. They remain in the hunt with Baltimore, Denver, Indianapolis and Miami for the final Wild Card spot.

  1. The Jags have just mentally given up and it’s tough to blame them. What a disaster it was for that team to retain Bortles when it was so obvious that even their own coach didn’t trust him to succeed in tough game situations. Did they really think that a team with Super Bowl aspirations wouldn’t have situations against elite teams where they would need great QB play?

Now they’ve wasted another year and those defensive players know it’s hopeless. Yeah they are pros and should be into it 100% no matter what but that’s just not reality. Human nature always wins. These guys feel like no matter how hard they play that they have no chance.

But hey, Bortles didn’t cost $25 million a year. Great. Do you get rings for that?

  2. OK-One thing- How does this defense hold Andrew Luck to 0 touchdowns, 0 points(keep in mind he had 7-8 games in a row with 3 TD passes) but then, only 4 short days later allow one guy to run through them… 4 TIMES??? It’s not like he has blinding speed or Barry Sanders/LT in his prime quickness, this was pure power running. Sure his O-line helped blow the JAGS off the ball, but he broke at least 5 tackles on the 99 yard run…wow. Props to Derrick Henry(I am gonna be mad all weekend I did not roster him in Draft Kings, that would have won the Monday-Thursday slate for me easily..)

  3. Yeah as really Jaguars all the hype and not matching it like in 2017. Seems like a hangover. They have a great defense. But defense can’t carry the team enough. Need more input on offense.

  4. “”Looks like another Coughlin team has flat out quit.””

Bouye did… Jogging behind, thinking his teammates were gonna tackle him.
He could have easily caught up to him.

  5. As a Vikings fan, I always hated that run by Dorsett. I knew that would be talked about for eternity. The fact the Vikings won the game, would be forgotten and never remembered.

  6. Fire their entire coaching staff. I mean, yeah, this isn’t what you’re gonna get every game, or ever again, but they have avoided given him meaningful carries all year. Dude has to touch the ball 15 times a game period. He’ll wear you down! So yeah, just continue runner a lesser back and throw 3 yard passes.

  7. The Jags have totally imploded. It’s a shame. I was hoping they were building something that would last, but apparently last season’s winning record was just a fluke. Back to the drawing board, Jags.

  8. 3 running backs got 200+ yards rushing in a game this season
History lesson: in 1980 Earl Campbell had 4 200 yd rushing games in a season all by himself! Luv yA Blue! Still the greatest!

  9. The real tragedy here is that almost nobody had Derrick Henry in their lineups for the first round of fantasy playoffs. Hasn’t done jack all year.

    Funny how that happens.

  10. Hmmm…I wonder what Jalen Ramsey has to say about their defense now. What he should say is their defense is GARBAGE. They looked like they didn’t even want to try to tackle Henry last night. On one of Henry’s touchdowns their DB Harrison just ran around half-speed trying to figure out how to not tackle him. The entire defense has quit. Maybe something else they do after firing Marrone is to put a muzzle on Ramsey. Either that or someone in the locker room should shut his mouth for him.

  11. Nobody upset with 2 missed holds and a facemask when bad calls benefit you – if Bouye grabbed Derrick “only good against the jags” Henry by the mask, there would have been outrage, fines and ejections lol

YES I’m bitter and biased but that was the most embarrassed as a jags fan I’ve ever been to lose to a garbage team and not even try like that.

This is the lowest this team has been since Mularkey was here.

Marrone should be fired today – it’s a long week, let McCardell coach out the string.

  12. Blake Bortles is not a good QB, but he gives the Jaguars a better chance of winning than Cody Kessler does.

  13. The reality is this: The Jags believed all their press clippings from last year, and thought they were better than they really are. And Coughlin’s “we were one whistle away from the SB” mindset is emblematic of that.

Near year, all teams starting from scratch, but these guys – from the front office on down – obviously thought everything would be handed to them this year.

  14. Someone said Henry doesn’t have blazing speed. He is in fact one of the fastest players in the game, both acceleration and top speed. It has been measured and recorded. Give him the ball 20-25 times a game and actually block for him and see what happens. Sad he plays in the modern NFL, would have love to have seen him before ruler changes made it USFL lite…

Eh before last night he had like 5 TDs in 6 games. Not killing it exactly, but some might have seen the writing on the wall.

Dude they never call facemask on a stiff arm. Happens on 90% of stiff arms. Stop being a baby. At least you’re getting a better draft pick & can reach again for Bortles 2.0

  17. Somehow the supposed leaders of this team. On D will blame Bortles even though he didn’t play. They talk so much smack and produce nothing. Reminds me of the guys in school or just in general growing up. The one’s that talk smack are always the biggest wimps. The quiet one’s, watch out. That holds true in life too.

  18. What a performance, but some Jags’ players effort was pitiful. I’m sure that will go over well with Coughlin. I was a 9th grader living in MN and went to that Viking Dallas Monday night game. I don’t remember who won and I couldn’t tell you how the Viking season went, BUT I’ll never forget that run and being there for it in the old crappy Metrodome.

  19. Henry’s night was made, not because of bad tackling, but NO tackling whatsoever.
Marrone should be canned today. If there is ever a reason to just outright fire your headcoach, last night’s game would be the shining example of a reason.
I don’t care how many injuries you have, I don’t care what your record is, in the game of football there is NO reason to just NOT show up. Actually I think the Jags would look better today had they just stayed in Jacksonville. What a disgrace!

As a Jags fan you have no right to call another team a “garbage team”

  21. Henry’s best game this season was 58yds and his longest rush was 16yds before last night. I’m not impressed with Henry, looks like Ajayi a couple of years ago, had a few good games and then everyone wanted him and he’s done nothing since, we’ll have to wait and see if Henry ends up having the same results. If I were the Titans HC/GM I’d seriously be looking for another RB this off-season, Henry just isn’t living up to what they thought he’d be and one 200+yd game changes nothing. One or a few good games doesn’t mean squat, a team needs a consistant threat at RB, not one that ONLY shows up once or twice a year!

OH and BTW, it was against the Jags = enough said!

Great… Now all the Fantasy players that drafted Henry can win their consolation brackets.

    >>>No they won’t, they benched him weeks ago for doing next to nothing! His best game was 58yds and longest rush was 16yds before he found that accorn last night, there isn’t anyone still starting Henry now that the bye weeks are over and in >90% of the leagues he’s still available he’s been so BAD, excuse me I meant HORRIBLE!!!
