Cowboys take commanding lead in NFC East with OT thriller

The Cowboys haven’t clinched the NFC East, but it’s over except for mathematically.

Dallas’ 29-23 overtime victory over the Eagles on Sunday gives the Cowboys a two-game lead on Washington and Philadelphia with three games to play. The Cowboys are 8-5. Washington and Philadelphia are 6-7, and Dallas swept the Eagles.

The Cowboys have Indianapolis, Tampa Bay and the Giants remaining. The Eagles have the Rams, Texans and Washington. With Washington on its fourth starting quarterback, it’s not even worth considering its chances.

The Cowboys overcame a 3-5 start, winning their fifth consecutive game in dramatic fashion.

Dallas won the coin toss in overtime and drove down for the winning touchdown. Rasul Douglas had a chance for the pick — he had one earlier in the game — but hit the ball up in the air and Amari Cooper caught it for the winning touchdown. The 15-yard score ended it without the Eagles getting a chance to touch the ball in the extra period.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott had the most passing yards of his career with 455. It was his first 300-yard game this season and the fourth of his career.

But Prescott also threw two interceptions and lost a fumble to keep Philadelphia in it.

Cooper was the hero, with 10 catches for 217 yards and three touchdowns. He now 26 catches for 473 yards and five touchdowns in his past three games. He had 22 catches for 280 yards and a touchdown in six games with Oakland this season before the Raiders traded him for a first-round pick.

Ezekiel Elliott had 28 carries for 114 yards, including a 2-yard run on fourth-and-one in overtime. He also caught 12 passes for 79 yards.

Carson Wentz went 22-of-32 for 228 yards and three touchdowns.

  1. Tough to beat the opponents, and the refs

That being said, Eagles didn’t play well enough to win, and deserved this L

Congrats on the division win Cowboys

  2. Some game ,,from all the Ny GIANTS FOOTBALL fans we would like to thank the iggles for their participation in the 2018 NFL season and let us look forward to next year !

  3. Injury plagued defense or not Philly played a hell of a game gotta give em props. I’ve been more nervous before both Philly games this year than I have any other games knowing what Philly can do. But to all the internet “experts” how does that Amari Cooper trade look now?

  4. Ouch, one of the more frustrating Eagles games I can remember. Refs were questionable at times but Dallas deserved to win. Game came down to who’s trade for a WR was better and I think that was made pretty obvious tonight. Looking forward to an early exit from the playoffs for Dallas

  5. Wild game for sure. Horrible offensive pass interference call on the TD called back on the Iggles. Jones is looking like a genius for bringing in Cooper. Going for it on 4th down and then the tipped pass for the TD win was a great drive. And after all that I still hate the Cowboys!

  6. Born and raised near Philly but Jerry Jones is the one laughing now at all those Giant, Eagle, Redskin and others around the league who laughed when he got Cooper for what he did. Sure he’s playing for a contract but today I bet you not one Cowboy fan gives a crap about that pick, they won today and are in the driver’s seat out of the NFC East. Who’s writing derogatory things now about how this has turned out?

    LOL! Caliz…

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I CANT HEAR YOU AFTER WINNING 3 STR8 FROM THE EAGLES…….. WHAT YO?
    BRO WHAT?????????

  8. Where are those people who said that Cooper would disappear after a big game? In the two games since his big game against Redskins, he’s caught 18 for 293. Somebody better start respecting that.

  9. Losers whine about the refs.
Winners go home and “have hot coffee” with the prom queen.
You had your moment. Welcome to midnight, Cinderella.

  10. I won’t confirm or deny the officiating was bad, but I will say it was a great 4th quarter both teams wanted it. Respect for the eagles for not giving up and fighting for their playoff lives but the better team won when they drove down on the worn-down eagle defense in ot.

  11. If you don’t think the Eagles got utterly hosed by that zebra crew then I’m afraid you either don’t have functioning eyes or don’t have a functioning brain.

  12. In Jerry’s World you play by Jerry’s rules. The OPI call on Eagles tight end was the worst call of the year, and that is saying something.

  13. Wow dak Prescott is becoming the dual threat we’ve all knew he was and is. He can pick you apart and run for first downs. Sure he makes some mistakes sometimes, every qb in the NFL does. But can you put them mistakes behind you and lead your team to a win with clutch drive after clutch drive in the fourth quarter! This Cowboys team is for real and probably the best team in the nfc, great defense and a smash mouth offense that controls the clock is a very dangerous team in the playoffs. They already beat the saints, Saints beat the rams. Cowboys will do the same to the rams. Cowboys will beat the bears. Bears have good defense but their offense needs help. If Cowboys keep playing this way they’ll beat any team in the playoffs and superbowl. Great defense great run and gun offense. Nobody wants to play the Cowboys in the PLAYOFFS. They’re my NFC pick to go to the superbowl.

  14. The NFL has become awful. Don’t think this BS job by the refs won’t hit. This league is trash.

  15. Pats fan says

    “……………
Philly “D” only gave up 34 first downs and 576 yards. That’s a “good” day for them!

On a lighter note….Santa’s gonna get pelted with snowballs soon…

How did your pats do today? 😂

You sound like Hillary voters. You lost fair and square. No Dynasty, get over it.

  17. Assist to the refs for taking 10+ points off the board for the eagles, highly entertaining 2nd half marred by the worst officiating I’ve ever seen. The opening kick fumble, the goeddert td, shoot; the roughing the passer in Dallas was bogus. How do you have as many eyes as you do officiating a game and still get so many calls dead wrong? I don’t care if it benefits my team or not, get the call right in a big game. The players train round the clock, the fans dedicate time and money…the least you can do is get the game changing calls correct. How about the 4hj & 1 zeke picked up in OT? His knee was down, why is that not reviewed? I’m not even saying the call was wrong, he might’ve and probably even did extend the ball over the line before he was down but how can you not look at that? What a joke

  18. Most disgraceful/incompetent/over involved officials I have seen in decades. It was an embarrassment to The NFL!
These officials all should be heavily fined. They took the opening play of the game and gave the ball to The Cowboys after a clear fumble and Eagles recovery. I have never seen that in 50 plus years of watching football. Turnovers are huge!
Then the officials called so many penalties in the first half that it turned what might have been a good matchup into a very dull and boring game. 6 to 0 at half! Thanks ti the officials completely over stepping their responsibilities but then missing blatant calls that everyone could see. Which way did they want to go?
Finally if Dallas ever complains about getting hosed at another team’s stadium they should just think of this humiliating unprofessional/ heavily slanted to the home team embarrassment to THE NFL OFFICALS ASSOCIATION & THE NFL IN GENERAL.
Thriller? How about fan killer instead.

  19. While the dynasty talk did happen by some fans can someone please remind me what the Pats did after their first SB (Besides cheat more). That said the birds had no chance to win in the playoffs and unless you win it all the Amari trade still is just a high cap cost you hopes stays interested (He was good in Oak at first to). Even Dak’s 2 touchdown throws to him weren’t very good throws. One lucky bounce and one is a pick if it’s played by a nfl caliber cb. Dallas is going to be haunted by the QB. Every where else they are pretty damn good.

  20. Great win for the boys but it feels like Dak is bound to become a liability in the playoffs. Dude has the accuracy of uncle Rico from napoleon dynamite when throwing the deep ball and fumbles way too much. Gallup should have had at least 1 TD and possibly a second.

  21. The NFL Needs to seriously look at these referees. How can you miss so many flagrant calls then call some that just don’t exist.

    It is shameful!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Hillary got hosed too, if you want to look at it that way. At least there’s an enquiry in to that. This crew of homers will just continue on their merry way, no questions asked.

  23. Ok blame the officials but the Eagles played themselves into this position. Winning the SB is awsome but defending it separates good from great.

  24. Ha. The taste of victory over an nfc east opponent is soooo sweet. That said, i dont live and die with the NFL any longer. Ivmiss the highs as they were so special. I dont miss the lows. No more caring how the boys embarrass me with their dumb illegal shenanigans.

  25. I rarely say this, but officiating was the difference in this game. Not “the reason” we lost, but the difference. They took away a fumble recovery and a TD. Both were clearly wrong calls. The second one was utterly bogus. I’m happy to criticize the secondary, Schwartz, Doug and Wentz. But without those calls we’d have won.

  26. I admit the fumble recovery not given to the eagles was big. The touchdown being called back would have been bigger if they didnt score on the exact same drive. A drive also helped out by a bogus roughing the passer call.

In the end the eagle were only in the game because of Dak. He had 3 bad turnovers and missed wide open WRs for touchdowns on two separate drives.

  27. I already can’t wait to bet against Dallas in the first round of the playoffs. All this streak will get them is more years of Jason Garrett and make them give Dak a cap-crushing deal.

  28. I didn’t think the refs did that bad. They had God-awful calls against Dallas too that totally changed the momentum of the game. It all averaged out in the end. Against the Saints…that was far worse officiating. Do Eagles fans usually complain about refs when they loose?

  29. stonedwhitetrash says:

“If the Cowboys only had a……quarterback”.

Hmmmm…… Prescott has won 5 in a row, and had 355 yards, and 3 TD’s today. The running game and the D is the strength of this team, but Prescott is playing much better.

Your name certainly explains the lack of logic in your response, however……

  30. My my the whining from Philadelphia fans,,,,wow. In a 16 game schedule calls go all over the place and always evens out. Just admit your “one and done”

  31. skawh says:
Talk about a soft schedule. I can’t wait until Dallas is 1 and done – Again!

    __________________________________________________________

Soft schedule? Each team only has two opponents that the other doesn’t play. The Cowboys schedule is only weaker now because they played the Eagles twice, who have a losing record, whilst the Eagles strength of schedule is higher because they played the Cowboys twice, who have a winning record.

This is one of the weakest excuses I’ve seen so far.

The Cowboys may indeed go one and done. The Eagles are just done

  32. I don’t know what I am enjoying more, the cowboys beating the Eagles, or all the whining crying Eagles fans on this page! How ‘Bout Them Cowboys!!!!

Just admit you are NEVER and done while you comment on a team you don”t root for you bum. Which team do you root…I don’t care.

  34. The worst officiating ever. The offensive pass interference call late against Philly and the personal foul call against Dallas for tackling the QB on the very next play.
Absolutely pathetic calls that both officials should be suspended for.

  35. “Ok blame the officials but the Eagles played themselves into this position. Winning the SB is awsome but defending it separates good from great.”

So…..Since nobody has repeated since 2004 does that mean that none of those winning teams were great?

It would be better if you stuck with the lame “one year dynasty!!” drivel from fans who wish their team had the chance to be a 1 year dynasty.

  36. i agree with the above comment bit as not a fan of either tem i watched the game from beginning to the end the opening kickoff was a fumble recovered by the eagles yet the refs said it was not CLEARLY RECORCED? there were 3 eagles on the ball? and the td by the tight end was called back by offensive pass interference? within the 5 yard limut/ They did score on that drive but some or mosy od the critical penalties (tickytak calls) were on the eagles. Makes me think very hard on the reputations on the refs To me that 1st play on the kickoff where there were 3 eagles on the ball and the refs said no recovery on the fumble tells me that New York should look into these refs??

  37. The NFL is brutal to watch. If I didn’t have a rooting interest I’d never watch it. The college game is far superior…

  38. Cowboys vs bears will be the nfc championship game
Both have great defenses and a run and gun offense that controls the clock.
Chargers vs chiefs will be afc championship game. That’s a coin flip. Both are great teams and the two best teams in the afc.

  39. I’m out on the NFL. If you don’t think Jerry Jones’ corrupt, Trump supporting ass may have swayed things then I have a freaking birdge to sell…….

  40. Cry Eagles cry. There was bad calls against Dallas also. The helmet call on Zeke was bad. Randy Gregory had a sack of Wentz taken away as well from a phantom penalty. Eagles still scored a TD on the bad OPI drive at the end so the penalty wasn’t the reason they lost. Just accept Dallas is the better team this season and stop living in last year.

  41. The officiating was terrible, but that’s how it goes sometimes. Amari Cooper was definitely worth the 1st round Dallas gave up and just think that pick is going to be in the 20’s, thank you Raiders ! Also, who was that Eagles player that said they were going to choke ? Tell Shamu that the Cowboys didn’t choke, their own cornerback did.

  42. I don’t have a dog in this fight, but the officiating was terrible. It went both ways and made what should have been an exciting game, feel like a chore. It felt like there was a flag on every play.

Exactly. Not to be snarkey bit if you have ever won a championship in any sport at any level you might understand.

  44. It’s amazing how people comment on how “this or that player is trash” this is an extremely hard game to play and remain poised. The many things that one has to think about during a play is and can be overwhelming…. all the while asking your body to do un-natural things.

  45. Wild game. Cowboys completely dominated the first half but couldn’t put points on the board. That’s going to cost them down the road if they dont clean that up. Second half was all over the place. Tons of big plays (with a few missed big plays on both sides) and some really questionable penalties around. Eagles D line played their heart out that second half but the first half beat down caught up to them in OT. Missed fg from dallas followed by a 62 yarder. Missed extra point from Philly. So many things could have turned this game either way.

  46. No sour grapes, but shows the Cowboys have plenty of issues as well, up and down play by both teams. Division is theirs and well earned.

Too many flags – and missed calls on both sides of the ball, it felt at some parts the Zebras were making calls to replace missed calls.

Refs were seen to much, for what was basically a playoff game.

  47. Dallas should attempt winning a playoff game before we announce them as being “back”.

I mean they played a team with no secondary and needed ot to win at home.

Wow, we’re deep into the conspiracy theory barrel now. So now, it’s Trump’s fault the eagles lost.

I’ve been in the market for a nice “birdge”. I’ll buy one from you.

  49. The Cowboys had 11 penalties to the Eagles 5, so yeah, definitely the fix was in. It just makes the victory even sweeter having to overcome numerous offensive holding penalties, not to mention, three turnovers!!

  50. I hate both teams, but the Eagles got the royal shaft from the officials in that game. That call on their TE for pass interference was beyond horrible. I never, ever trust any games played in Dallas, especially when they’re on national tv. The officials seem to give the Cowboys extra breaks all the time there. I honestly think Jerry Jones has an unfair hold over them somehow. He reminds me of John Gotti when he used to sit in a courtroom on trial knowing he had bribed the jurors. Jones sits up in his box with the look on his face that he knows the game is in the bag.

  51. All these Eagle fans complaining about officiating….as if nobody remembers they were gifted 2 “TDs” in the Super Bowl. Don’t wanna hear complaining and excuses about the refs like there’s some conspiracy. Last year after Jerry tried to halt Goodells extension Dallas defense goes 10 weeks without the benefit of a single holding call on opposing offenses not to mention losing Zeke to 6 game suspension for something there was no proof of yet the NFL makes no effort to see the actual video proof they knew existed against Kareem Hunt. But yea the NFL is just out to favor Dallas. You lost get over it

I don’t think it was, a WR or TE isn’t allowed to just run through/over the defender! The defender had established his position and the TE ran right into him.

  53. And just like your boy you have no reading comprehension. That’s not at all what I said. At least I know you can read though.

  54. Maybe I should I type it in a way a person with your capabilities can understand? Because he supports a corrupt person I believe he is possible of corruption. Not blaming him….you numbskull.

  55. I know. I’m messing with you, dude. I also know you don’t honestly believe that this game was fixed. You’re just upset and emotional. Perfectly understandable.

  56. First, I would like to say I agree the Refs blew 2 calls for the eagles, the opening kickoff, and the TE PI call. But for all you that say it cost you a TD, you guy scored a td on that same series. So no points were lost. The refs also blew calls for Dallas. The Gregory sack should not have been roughing the passer, the last play of the game, Rasul made contact before he touched the ball, no call, luckily Amari caught itThe helmet call on Zeke was bs, the eagle defender was lower than Zeke, is he supposed to run straight up? Horrible call! Great game. Eagles, I hate you guys and your fans, but you have a great team, Wentz is for real and that Dline can play with anyone , congrats on last year, we are moving on to next week. As far as officiating, we have been getting hosed as well as helped for 5 games now, I agree that officials need to be full time employees with more training. The league has them overprotecting players to the point that their jobs are much harder than in the past. You can breathe on a qb without getting flagged, I still don’t know what a catch is. All that aside, Dak needs to be better early in games, he was horrible for almost 3 qtrs. How many times can he miss Gallup who keeps running by defenders, although last one Gallup pulled up, not Daks fault. Go boys!

    ________________

Thanksgiving 2014 Zach Ertz, at the top of his route, runs into and pushes down JJ Wilcox, Wilcox grabs Ertz merely to hold himself up because he was the one pushed down after Ertz engaged contact and even though Ertz remained standing and engaged the contact Wilcox was flagged for holding. Interestingly enough after the game no Cowboy fan brought it up or complained about officiating while Eagle fans took to PFT to brag about how great they were, even though Dallas won the division that year. So I don’t care about that call today nor do I care about the kickoff fumble call. Rules state there has to be a clear recovery to overturn the call and despite Philly fan testimony there were 2 Cowboys in the pile up and officials didn’t, in real time, see the fumble at first and no Eagle fan or Philly media can even say who recovered it. Rules are rules much like the rules that state Dez Bryants catch wasn’t a catch or how Bert Emanuels catch years ago was determined to not be a catch. Some things in life are just guaranteed….like getting on here after a Cowboys win and seeing comments from most non Cowboy fans blaming officials before they’ll admit Dallas played a good game. Then you can guarantee those same people will take the time to click and comment on a Cowboys story and complain about them getting “too much attention” yet contributing to what they’re complaining about

  58. Welp, you are correct about both of those things for sure. Upset and Emotional. Funny, a Super Bowl win would have made me think that wouldn’t be possible for a while but I guess it doesn’t work that way. Wish you the best

  59. I would just like to point out that the Carson Wentz led Eagles have the same record as the Josh Johnson led Redskins.

Franchise QB! (Of course I’m speaking about Johnson)

Speaking of Johnson…is Lane having fun?

  60. 2017 Doug would have accepted the Dallas penalty on the PAT, had the ball spotted on the 1, gone for 2 and walked out with a win in regulation.

2018 Doug played not to lose, hoping for the best in OT. But his defense was gassed, and the offense never got the ball.

That PAT decision pretty much captures the contrast of the last 2 seasons.

Now i was happy ti see our beloved eagles win sb52. I was looKing forward to the defending campaign…..it has been a horror show. 2 plays show the diff between last year and this…. The td to the rook that was called back (last yr the td wouldve counted) and the final play (last year that wouldve been intercepted and peobably ran back for a winning td) so its ot just the zebras….its many things

  62. The Refs weren’t just horrible for the Eagles. They were just as bad for the Cowboys and they kept the Eagles in the game during the 4th quarter with a bunch of calls. I blame Jim Schwartz for his bend but don’t break defense. Seems like the playcalling allowed the Cowboys to just walk right into field goal range in OT but that plan didn’t work out too well. Please fire him this season he STINKS

  63. if eagles db’s are so inept why not double cooper. cause then zeke would run for 175 yds and 3 tds. so, eagles picked thier poison. could’nt happen to a better rival than philly.

  64. The refs robbed the Eagles of a fumble recovery and a TD…call it for what it is. But except for Fletcher Cox & Michael Bennett the defense forgot to board the plane.

  65. This game looked like the NFL is now rigged for betting reasons. They have to be careful. The more the obvious calls look deliberate, the more people are going to question if it’s for betting reasons. I have no horse in this game, but I watched it and came away believing that is was set up that Dallas had to win.

  66. Gregory didn’t hit Wentz below the knees. He wrapped him up below the knees. That was the second bogus roughing the passer call on Randy Gregory.

yup we laughed this past feb 2018 as well …. We are still laughing that Poke fans think barely beating a team with DBs that we not one a team 2 weeks ago means something when really they needed some home cooked refs to finish it. 22 years of nothing no ones worried. You now trying to pretend our SB drought still means something and 5 rings from a century long past mean something today.
