49ers upset Seahawks 26-23, keeping Seattle from clinching playoff berth

AP

The Seahawks will have to wait another week to punch their playoff ticket.

The 49ers didn’t play like a three-win team, getting their fourth victory with a hard-fought 26-23 effort that went overtime. It was San Francisco’s second consecutive win.

It ended the Seahwaks’ four-game winning streak and makes next week’s game against the Chiefs more important.

Seattle, which beat San Francisco 43-16 only two weeks ago, shot itself in the foot in overtime.

The Seahawks got the ball first and Russell Wilson hit running back J.D. McKissic for a 32-yard gain to the San Francisco 48. But the play was negated by a holding call on Ethan Pocic. Seattle ended up punting, ending Wilson’s chance for a 27th career fourth quarter or overtime comeback win.

All the 49ers needed was one more chance . . . and one more Seahawks’ penalty.

The 49ers threw an incomplete pass on second-and-15 on their winning drive, but Shaquill Griffin was flagged for pass interference. It set up San Francisco at the Seattle 41.

Jeff Wilson ran 23 yards on the next three downs, and Robbie Gould hit a 36-yard field goal with 3:06 remaining in overtime to win it.

The Seahawks had 14 penalties for 148 yards, including, on one drive, three 15-yard penalties.

49ers quarterback Nick Mullens completed 20 of 29 passes for 275 yards and a touchdown. Dante Pettis caught five passes for 83 yards.

Defensive lineman DeForest Buckner made 11 tackles, two sacks, three quarterback hits and four tackles for loss, which will put him in the conversation for NFC defensive player of the week.

The Seahawks got two sacks from Jarran Reed, who also had two other quarterback hits, and Frank Clark had five tackles, a sack and three quarterback hits.

Wilson finished 23-of-31 for 237 yards and two touchdowns, and Doug Baldwin caught four passes for 77 yards and two touchdowns. Chris Carson rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.

  1. The Seahawks had 14 penalties for 148 yards, including, on one drive, three 15-yard penalties.

And there is the reason. Seattle penalties will continue to hurt them.

    Good Win SF.

  2. Seahawks get a break against the Vikings with a no-call on the blocked field goal, in a game that ended 21-7. PFT spends all week talking about it, like the refs cost the Vikes the game.

Then the Seahawks get the worst DPI call I’ve ever seen, on a play where the DB literally didn’t even touch the receiver, giving the 49ers a first down in field goal range. The 49ers get a win due to a bad call, and nothing about it?

    OK.

  3. The Niners havent beat Seattle in 10 games until today so I’ll actually be humble here. That was an awesome game to watch. The officiating was absolutely horrible for both teams. I hope Seattle and San Fran can kick start their rivalry again next year. The NFL is a lot more fun with rivarlies like this. Good game!

  4. not saying some weren’t legit . . .but a ton of call all going in one direction at the most crucial times of this game. Really swung things one way. The hold on the long completion in OT (never got a replay) was an absolute killer.

inter-division road games are almost never a walkover, had a feeling this was going to be a tough one.

  5. Mullens can ball. Dude has shredded defenses the last 3 weeks with a bunch of no names besides Kittle.

  6. 49ers acting like their team got the win. LOL. The refs gave the Niners the ball in field goal range in OT with one of the worst DPI calls I’ve ever seen. Niners didn’t win, the refs did.

But it is funny to hear whiner fans celebrating like they’re almost relevant or something. Y’all haven’t been relevant in decades, but congrats on beating the superior Seahawks for the first time in 5 years.

Respect to the faithful. Mullens keeps impressing me. JG has a fight on his hands for the starting job next year.

    —————————————-

    Respect.

It’s been a while since these teams played against each other like this. Hard fought game.

    Go Niners!!!!!

  8. I wish the Pats would trade something for Mullens in the offseason. I’d rather see him than Hoyer standing on the sideline as Brady ages.

  9. Like I said, why all the hype? Can’t beat playoff teams, lost to the worst team in the league (record wise), they’re just a middle of the road team.

A little humility goes a long way. Your team hasn’t even secured a playoff spot yeat and face one of the top seeds in the AFC next week. The reason for that is you were just beat by a team trying to secure a top draft pick. Enjoy

And keep whining about the refs, it is thee hallmark of losers.

P.S sorry not sorry but 2011-2013 was within this decade.

  11. This Mullen’s kid is a Pro Bowl caliber QB. He outplayed Wilson. The Redskins should trade for him but Shanahan will not give him up. San Fran ALWAYS has great quarterbacks. Now they have 2 of them for next season….and the REDSKINS still suck.

  12. Didn’t see the game. It wasn’t broadcasted in Colorado. Good win for the 9ers. Penalties will hurt any team. Especially the number and yardage accumulated by Seattle.

Maybe Seattle will get a win next week and lock up that playoff seed. Unless the defense plays like this again. So, who knows.

    Good job niners!

    A Seahawks fan.

Just rest up Doug. This match up is basically the older brother giving their sibling a noogie and send them on their way.

    Remember this? haha

  15. SeaChicken fans never complain when the refs help them at home but one game goes out way and they come out crying. Hey, great win for the team to get that monkey off their back. Mullins is a legit #2, sorry CJ. Lets hope this kick starts the rivalry again!

This was ref’d horribly, one of the worst one sided games ever.

Sort of like the missed call against Wagner that would have put the Vikings at the 1 yd line? Yeah ok.

  17. I’m glad to see my niners keep fighting for themselves and shanny. It’s always good to get the win

  18. Good job Niners – I thought Mullens played really hard – he had some nice throws in the face of big rushes. There is a good core of talent in SF that maybe got off to a bit of a slow start this year.

Too much for the Hawks to overcome – the Niners, on the road, in the rain, on slippery turf, and a lot of penalties. Yes there was some bogus calls, especially on Sweezy, and that last one of Griffen. But that’s how the flags fly, so we’ll try again next week. Go Hawks !

  19. Lots of penalties, but the two most ridiculous ones were roughing the passer call against the niners when all they did was tackle Russel Wilson. Only a star QB gets that call. The second was head down rookie runner Wilson flipping the ball to the ref and the Seahawk player walks into it. Come on. At least try to use some judgement on whether on not that was anywhere near intentional.

  20. Ha ha ha, the sea chickens find away to choke, I love it. What a creepy bunch of coaches/players and fans, they talk smack then go and get beat, when will they learn that no one cares about them and they are 1 and done that’s if they can even hold on to the wildcard spot. Looks like Sherman gets the last laugh after all. Now they get to lose again next week to KC, honestly, the 49ers might have just ended their season with the win today when you consider the rest of their schedule, they needed to win the game today and laid a big egg, could not have happen to a creepier fan base.

  21. I don’t consider it bad reffing when they call penalties that were plainly there. SEA OL was holding on almost every play. So to me it was a good job. What penalties exactly were bad calls? Crickets.

  22. HAWks played poorly and just couldn’t get outta there own way. Disappointing cause as the weather got worse I thought that’s would play right into their hands. But I tip my hat to Mullans ( tough SOB- got hit lots but kept his cool) and to Coach Shanahan too.
Nice win for Niners, and potentially a great problem to have next year in camp with Jimmy G competing with Mullans for the QB job.

Yep. It’s that new airplane right?

I don’t care. I usually have the game on while doing other things. If it’s not on TV, it’s no big deal to me. I’ll just catch the score throughout the day while taking care of what needs to be done around the house.

The new NFL isn’t as good as it used to be with rules benefiting the offense, and restricting the defense.

I’m part of the minority that’s getting turned off by pro sports with owners hiking prices, money grabs, players thinking 10 million a year isn’t good enough, owners jacking prices every year. Ten dollar beers, if you choose to buy one.

If it’s on TV, I may watch it, or just check in on it from time to time.

You ever heard of freedom of choice? That’s what I used today.

    Have a nice evening!

  24. How the NFL a multi multi multi BILLION DOLLAR EMPIRE allows teams to put a patchwork grass field together which players were falling all over the place on and which affects the outcomes of games is absolutely insane. Hey Rog, you ever hear of field turf?

  25. Mullins is the man. I think he can lead our team to the playoffs next year with a training camp and full season but with the money we gave garapolo, there’s no chance, but it’s great to have a good proven qb as an insurance policy. This team has a good defense, good offence, and is finally playing great ball. Hopefully garapolo comes back healthy by September and leads us to the playoffs. Niners will have a great chance at winning the west next year with garapolo or Mullins. I have confidence in both.

  26. Seattle’s one dimensional “run only offense” is too predictable. If you can’t beat a 3 win team on the road you don’t deserve a playoff berth! Seattle has virtually zero passing game. Fire that OC, AGAIN!

  27. Best scenario for people who don’t like the Chicken Hawks:

Penny-pinching Mode makes an unsuccessful run for the playoff and misses it, but they have too many wins to be drafting near the top so they cannot improve their team through the draft.

  28. U-G-L-Y, you ain’t got no alibi. That was a full-on embarrassment. The whole game will probably be featured on C’mon Man. Too many flags, too many missed opportunities, just awful. Shake it off and come back swinging.

  29. Niners played with spirit.

Mullens stood in there and completed throws that most high paid quarterbacks would have tucked and ducked, or maybe better, high tailed it for the sidelines.

Seriously, great competitive spirit, but take care of yourself Mullens, noone wants to see you killed.

My favored Seahawks have come to play all season, but maybe they really are “middle of the road”, dang, thanks Sherm.

  30. Oh, but, maybe the most important lesson from tonight:

It’s hard to beat the 49ers eleven times in a row.

Nobody in Seattle is scared of the Chiefs. At all. Bring that rookie QB into our stadium, and tell us how he isn’t scared of noise. One less excuse when the Seahawks expose him as the rookie quarterback he is. The Chiefs have yet to face a defense like Seattle and they definitely haven’t experienced anything like the Clink at Prime Time.

To the dirtysoufsavage, maybe you should watch one of Seattle’s last four games. Then you might understand the hype. Seattle is putting up 200 rushing yards a game on almost everyone they’ve played and their hungry young defense is forcing multiple turnovers a game. I understand this football thing is probably new to you, but traditionally, having a strong running attack combined with a positive turnover ratio tends to lead to winning a lot of football. Saying you don’t understand the hype just says you haven’t watched any of their games so don’t really mean a whole lot to anyone but you
    —_————-

You sure got personal when all I said was I don’t see the hype over the Hawks. Too bad you caught feelings. You look real dumb right now.

To the other classier Hawk fans out there, good game. Can’t win them all. I see this rivalry heating back up quickly after a couple year hibernation. Niners need to add a few more pieces to Shanny’s offense.

Your Seahawks just lost to a 3-10 49ers team with a 3rd string qb and a patchwork team filled with rookies. One would think you would be slightly humbled. Guess not. Besides, the Chiefs have played plenty of good defenses and won. To name a few, they beat the Broncos twice. The Seahawks lost to the Broncos. They put up 51 points on the Rams defense, despite the loss. Do you really think that Seattle offense can keep up with the Chiefs offense? Laughable man!

  34. Just the Shehawks being Shehawks. The dynasty that never was. They luck into a SB win cuz they get to play a geriatric QB in real football weather. The next year, when they are face to face with a real dynasty and the greatest QB in the history of the league, Russ and the lesions of doom wet themselves in crunch time.

  35. Julius you are an idiot.

For the Hawks fans complaining about bad calls(the irony) how about the fact that your team is mediocre enough to let it get to that point against a, at the time, 3 win team?

  36. Believe me I can feel the Seahawk fans for all the penalties, including a couple bad ones that likely cost them the game. It has just been so long since I was on this side of that game. Typically the niners get screwed by the refs(i.e. losing 5 games by a combined 13 pts last year) it seemed like every game last year I would be excited we are about to win and then boom, flag, nope you lose by 2.

It does go around and it does come around, why it just doesn’t matter. We got a couple good calls and thank god, it was my Birthday yesterday, and I won both playoff FF games and am on the way to the Championship next week in both.

One league I lost AJ Green, K. Hunt, and then A.Jones after 8 yards on Sunday, who was my number one RB. However a D.Henry WW pick up and play along with D.Hopkins and Mahomes, I squeaked it out by 3 points🎂🎉

I want these games sooooo bad! Pray for me!
