Baker Mayfield playing at an MVP level over last six games

Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has become the favorite to win the league’s offensive rookie of the year award, but with better coaching and a full season as a starter, Mayfield might be the Most Valuable Player, not just the rookie of the year.

Mayfield spent the entire offseason and the first three weeks of the regular season working with the Browns’ backups, as head coach Hue Jackson insisted Tyrod Taylor would start the season. And he spent half the season working in an offense designed by Jackson and Todd Haley. So it’s unsurprising that Mayfield got off to a somewhat slow start when he finally became the Browns’ starter in Week Four.

But with some time to develop and a better offense called by new coordinator Freddie Kitchens, Mayfield has been outstanding. In fact, as the Browns have won five of the last six games, Mayfield has played at an MVP level. Here’s a simple comparison between Mayfield and the MVP favorite:

Mayfield last six games: 115.2 passer rating, .833 winning percentage.
Patrick Mahomes full season: 114.0 passer rating, .733 winning percentage.

Mayfield has no shot at the MVP this year. But if he plays this way next year, and if he finally takes the Browns to the playoffs, he may just be the league MVP next year.

  1. Falcons, Bengals, Broncos, Bengals, Panthers, Texans…….

    Defense(by yards since you mention his rating)

    27th, 32nd, 23rd, 32nd, 17th and 18th. Top of the line competition or even middling, this is not. This absurd hype train goes off the rails this Sunday.

  2. A Hall of Fame QB had an immature start to his career, too. Threw a lot of INTs and liked to unretire a lot but…

    If Mr. Mayfield can focus on football enough instead stuff outside it will be fun to watch the Browns compete and give their passionate fans something to cheer about. I’ll be rooting for the good stories of The Baker.

  3. Hold your horses – they went 5-1 but those 5 wins were all against losing teams, all out of it like Browns, and so Mayfield’s 6-game stat is all garbage time v garbage teams. The one loss? Against the Texans where Mayfield handed it away with 3 INTs.

  4. Not only better coaching hinges, Browns also now have a talented nucleus of first and second year players who shoud be coming into their prime together.

  5. It’s refreshing to see a QB like Baker in Cleveland. I hope them narrowly missing the playoffs gives them that much of a spark to roll over into next season with the same attitude and moxy they’ve been playing with the last several games. As long as they stay healthy, the Browns will one of the tougher teams to beat in the AFC for the next few years. Young & Dangerous! Go Browns!

  6. Jackson should not coach again.
    Mayfield lost a part of his fan base. Rather than show class and gain fans support. He let his 13 year old selfish, entitled, and obnoxious personality show

  7. As a lifelong Browns fans, I agree that our rookie QB has been playing the position at a high level.

    But, Baker would be the first to point out that 6 games do not make an MVP…

    …but it’s a start!…as the team and fans look forward to next season.

    Go Browns…

  8. As a Steeler fan, it pains me to say the Browns actually look decent. But as a Steeler fan, it is great to see part of the issue was Todd Haley’s terrible offensive gameplan.

  9. Good for him. They only played one team with a winning record though and lost that game by almost three scores. Maybe we should postpone the MVP talk…

  10. You forget it’s the Browns. They will look at the success and realize it’s time to change the coaches/schemes etc. You can’t pick high if you win….the Brown way.

  11. He’s a lot of fun to watch but I’m not sure that I like him as a person. I guess I’m more of a Russell Wilson kind of guy…my young son is impressionable and I want him to be more like Russ than Baker atm. Imagine your kid staring you down like Baker did haha!

    But I know for a fact that he doesn’t give a damn about what I think so I guess who cares right?

    He sure is fun to watch though…

  12. In the last six games… baker mayfield has played:

    – 32nd ranked defense in the nfl T-W-I-C-E
    – 27th ranked defense in the nfl
    – 29th ranked PASS Defense
    – 23rd ranked defense in the nfl
    – 21st ranked PASS Defense

    Cleveland averaged 24.1 points
    24.1 points would rank the offense 15th in the nfl.
    15th in the nfl against very bad defenses isn’t very impressive.

    ENOUGH with the baker mayfield hype.

    ONE MORE THING: Hue Jackson’s Cleveland was robbed of 4 wins due to “poor” officiating

  13. As a Bills fan I lobbied for them to move up even further and take Mayfield. I knew all about his supposed “problems” But nothing that was really detrimental. Especially when compared to some other players. I just thought I saw a lot of the Jim Kelly “it” factor in him. He’s a winner, and will do whatever it takes to win. I wish the man all the success he deserves.

  14. I am not surprised, and I am happy for the man, the team, and the NFL. But as a lifelong (and long-suffering) Browns fan, I gotta admit I’m a little peeved at those lost weeks. Played hard in most of them, tying the Steelers and fighting the Saints, but the thought of worst to first in an up for grabs AFCN? Ugh!

  15. As much as Mahomes deserves recognition, he isn’t nearly the MVP as Mayfield.
    KC had much more talent around Mahomes, and wasn’t even close to the heavy lift Mayfield made to get the Browns out of the gutter.

  16. I thought Mayfield was the best QB in the draft. I wasn’t surprised he was taken first overall from a talent standpoint, I just was a bit shocked the Browns actually pulled the trigger. Good for them. They had a great draft this year. Now they just need to focus on building that Oline. It’s complete garbage. Do that and they can be a perennial contender.

  17. And this is why the MVP award is a joke. Team stats should have nothing to do with it. The award is most valuable players not most valuable players on a winning team. Literally you named 1 player stat and 1 team stat. Why don’t we just call the award what it is? “Best QB (not named Drew Brees) on a team that is in position to go deep in the playoffs”

  18. A few things`1) doesn’t matter who the last 6 teams are, the offense is designed well and Mayfield is throwing into tight windows. The defensive coverage hasn’t been broken, it’s just that Mayfield can place the ball where he wants. This offense allows him to make the throws. 2) if we pick the wrong coaching combo, all bets are off. Again, this offense is designed around making Mayfield feel comfortable. Haley’s offensive forced him to do things that Baker didn’t like. 3) keep building that O line and pickup one more WR – Chubb and Mayfield will thrive.

  19. Steeler fan here. I know the Browns are much improved and I don’t dislike the Browns except for Baker Mayfield. He has an attitude. Sorry, not my kind of player. I don’t want Mayfield to get the Steelers into the playoffs. Go Ravens.

  20. Thank goodness we have him…but MVP, no

    MVP is simple…if you had first pick of anyone in the NFL right now, who would it be?

    K. Mack is my choice

    (thank you Todd Hailey…because of you, Huey is old news)

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    They were robbed of more wins than that due to “poor” (read: atrocious) coaching and game management by Hue Jackson.
    This is absurd. When a QB, RB, receiver etc. plays well and has great stats for the season, you dont’t go back and check where the competition was ranked. In college it may matter for draft considerations, but not the NFL.
  23. Mayfield last six games: 115.2 passer rating, .833 winning percentage.
    Patrick Mahomes full season: 114.0 passer rating, .733 winning percentage, full season QBR 115.3.
    Drew Brees full season 115.7 passer rating, .867 winning percentage, full season QBR 123.8.
    #1 seed NFC, best record in the NFL.
    The NFL media has come up with numerous excuses why Drew Brees has not won an MVP before. How about give it to the true MVP this year….Drew Brees, 7 game winning drives this season vs. only 4 for Mahomes. Don’t even think about comparing turnovers. Mahomes has cost his team at least two losses because of multiple turnover games.
  24. Such a shame he so immature. Baker needs to learn to be Professional Athlete and that he unfortunately is looked at as role model.
  25. Baker Mayfield deserved to be the number one pick and he has proven it. Head and shoulders above his fellow QB rookies including the much over-hyped Sam “leads the NFL in interceptions” Darnold!
  26. The Browns being anywhere near 15 in offensive rankings, whomever they played (that argument could be made against just about anyone) says that he has a case. They normally rank 32nd and have for years. MVP SHOULD mean most valuable to his team, which is in the NFL. They usually seem to want to give it to a QB by default, even though they might not be most valuable to their team’s success. I agree he shouldn’t get it – but so did the writer of this post. But to denigrate the kid because he played weak defenses? Browns have played alot of weak defenses over the years and that sure didn’t help.
  27. “Why is Mahomes the MVP favorite? Stats? The true MVP is Drew Brees…”
    Brees is great and deserves an MVP but Mahomes makes plays that no other QBs can. With that porous D in KC, I think KC may not have even made the playoffs without Mahomes and the prolific offense he ran.
  28. Not a Greg Williams fan, but you’d have to be a fool to try to fix something that isn’t broken. How bad does this make Hue Jackson look?
  29. First year starting QBs shouldn’t be allowed to be in concideration for MVP. Just use Dak Prescott anytime you disagree with me. The league needs a decent amount of tape on a guy before they gently force them into doing the things they aren’t good at. It’s like giving a Closer in baseball the Cy Young award. The top starting pitchers are better than closers because they have to get heart of orders out 3 times not just once. Every year Russell Wilson gets leap frogged by the latest new toy that has proved nothing other than being a flash in the pan thus far.
  30. Brees vs Mahomes:
    Brees is also 6-1 against teams with a winning record.
    Mahomes is 3-4 against teams with a winning record.
    Mahomes has played great and is the Chiefs MVP. Drew Brees is the NFL’s MVP.
  31. Lots of dummies are becoming fanboys of a qb that’s out of the playoffs. Lol. Idiots. He’s mediocre. Make te the playoffs and win a playoff game. Maybe then we can start overreacting. Atleast rg3 made the playoffs and in his rookie year. This bum will be even worse next year. Last place in his division will be the normal. Congrats on finishing third place in the division. Thanks to red rifle getting hurt. Mayfield will be humbled next year when they go 3-13.
  32. Baker’s the right guy for the Browns but it’s time to get off the hype train. During his “MVP” streak, he’s played 1 team with a good defense and scored 13 garbage time points.
  33. I actually have been a fan of the browns since the early 90’s. But Mayfield and his childish immature disrespectful behavior makes it easy to hate the browns even if it’s only Mayfield that I and everyone dislikes.
  34. Baker Mayfield should be considered an MVP candidate over the last 6 games in college. Give me a break!!!
    Tom Brady just ran a 4.1 forty this morning too! Drew Brees is 6’7″ he is much taller then he appears.
  35. If Mahomes was on the Saints team they’d be undefeated because Brees played poorly in their losses. The Saints have won games because of the defense. If Brees replaced Mahomes KC would have more losses.
    Every game KC’s lost the opposing team had the ball last. It was no fault of Mahomes.
    It’s not close, Mahomes is the MVP.
    ——————–
    Hue was terrible. When you screw around and change quarterbacks every game, you will never get better. Everyone cries about throwing these rookie quarterbacks to the wolves, when that is often exactly what they need.
  37. Baker is a juvenile because that’s what he was taught at Oklahoma. He thinks he is supposed to act this way.
  38. If Mahomes was on the Saints team they’d be undefeated because Brees played poorly in their losses. The Saints have won games because of the defense. If Brees replaced Mahomes KC would have more losses.
    ,,,,
    Stop it bro. You’re making too much sense. Haters don’t want to hear the truth.
  39. Then let’s talk about his stats for the season instead of cherry picking the last 6 games.
    ———————–
    This is absurd. When a QB, RB, receiver etc. plays well and has great stats for the season, you dont’t go back and check where the competition was ranked. In college it may matter for draft considerations, but not the NFL.
  40. The defenses weren’t top tier the last 6 games, but are professional defenses. The last time they faced the Ravens(best defense in the league at the moment), Mayfield torched them for over 340 yards in the air, under an archaic offense by Todd and Hue, and a second rate running back in Hyde. This is not an absurd notion that he is playing at an MVP caliber level.
  41. I am far from sold on Baker Mayfield. He has played bad teams and has won those games. I do not like his feet when he throws at times. See how he does next year.
  42. Harping on the bad teams the Browns have played is extremely silly because the NFL set the schedule, not the Browns.
    The important thing is Mayfield played well and won against the bad teams. Because he did his job well, and expected of a rising upper-tier-QB-to-be, this discussion is justified.
