Broncos are believed to be eyeing John Harbaugh, Mike Shanahan

Yes, the Broncos will engage in a traditional coaching search, now that Vance Joseph has been fired after two failed seasons on the job. The final outcome could end up being decidedly non-conventional.

The chatter in league circles regarding Denver’s future continues to be that G.M. John Elway would like to find a way to hire Ravens coach John Harbaugh or, failing that, a path to returning Mike Shanahan to the franchise.

Shanahan, who was fired 11 years ago today by the Broncos, is 66 years old — younger than Patriots coach Bill Belichick and Seahawks coach Pete Carroll. Shanahan last coached in 2013, when his four-year stint in Washington ended. Shanahan clearly has wanted to get back in, but he has had no serious suitors.

Other than the Broncos, of course. Elway reportedly wanted to fire Vance Joseph and hire Shanahan a year ago. Two years ago, Elway hired Joseph at a time when he could have hired Kyle Shanahan, Mike’s son.

Vikings fans could be very interested in this potential development, since perhaps Mike would be inclined to trade Case Keenum for Kirk Cousins, straight up.

  1. Good idea, hiring someone you’re friendly with. That can never go wrong right? Maybe the owner will grow tired of Elway and get rid of them both.

  2. Either candidate would be a tremendous upgrade over Vance Joseph. Yes, even Shanahan. Of course, there is still a matter of Elway the GM, but only one of the Bowlens or Ellis can really send him packing…and right now, there is a matter of team ownership to fight over.

I feel like the Broncos are in for a tough couple of years, though not as bad as 2017 and 2018.

    Hang in there, Broncos Country.

  3. Shanahan could do good for the offense and finding a QB. He was a part of Jake Plummer and Cutler getting on the team, and the offense was very good under his command. But he WRECKED the defense. The defenses they had when Cutler was the QB was some of the worst they’ve had in my lifetime.

  4. As a fan of a Broncos rival, I hope that Elway picks Shanahan. Just as I assume that most fans of the Raiders rivals were very happy when Son-of-Al brought back Gruden.

  5. Just listened to Elway’s interview via NFL Network. Elway said he wants to hire a coach with the “it factor” and “experience” and ability “to make the big call”. I’d wager that Shanahan is already dialed in here.

  6. They won’t get Harbaugh but Shanahan will put them back on track with an experienced NFL head coach. Keep in mind Shanahan wan’t fired in Denver for his coaching it was for his ‘GM’ing’. The one thing that hiring MS will do is bring stability and this mess in Denver is in real need of stability.

  7. I’m no Bronco fan, but I do remember Elway and Shanahan having issues back in the day. Didn’t really see eye to eye. This wouldn’t be a buddy hiring, it would be Elway thinking that Shanahan still has it. Whether that’s true… who knows. I’m not picking a side, but to consider it an “old boys club” hiring would be a mistake in my eyes.

Vic Fangio was the reason behind the 49ers success, not Harbaugh.

    *****

    Wrong Harbaugh, son.

This article is about “John” Harbaugh…..not “Jim”

  10. Mike Shanahan’s agent has no shame at all. Congrats to that agent on getting the name out there even thought the chances of him getting a head coaching job are zero.

  11. Speaking for all other AFC West fans, please sign Shanahan!! Without two HOFers in Elway and TD running the show, the ‘genius’ is 123-121, 1-5 in the playoffs. And 20 years removed from SB success. So yes, please please please hire this man!!!!

  12. They should hire Greg Roman. G Ro has an excellent football mind. He may not interview well, but he’s an outstanding Head Coaching candidate. Ask Jim Harbaugh. Fans complain about his offense, but his offense is tried and true in terms of his teams’ success, and it would be a good compliment to the Broncos defense.

Well it’s obviously not zero otherwise his name wouldn’t have come up.

  14. It seems like the AFC West is trying to go back about 20 years, with Jon Gruden already back and if the Broncos hire Mike Shanahan; maybe the Chargers can join them going back in time to hire Mike Riley and the Chiefs can go back and re-hire either Gunther Cunningham or Dick Vermeil.

  15. Coach Shanahan has led the Denver Broncos to 2 World Championships. The Broncos would be foolish not to bring him back.

Vic Fangio was the reason behind the 49ers success, not Harbaugh.

John Harbaugh has 0 to do with the 49ers or Fangio.

  17. Keep in mind Joe Ellis and Shanahan are not best of buddies and Ellis nixed a potential return of Shanahan last year. Shanahan on his own wouldn’t be a sexy hire although I get hiring someone familiar with the franchise and as head coach he could provide stability over the last couple years. A Shanahan/Kubiak combo would look more attractive.

  18. Is Elway trying to get fired? The offense has been in shambles since Manning retired and so far the only offensive-minded candidate being mentioned is old man Shanahan. Elway should be researching successful offensive schemes and the coaches that created/helped create them.

  19. 24 hours after the Ravens season ends we will hear of a trade involving Harbs and Flacco heading to Denver……im guessing for at least a first and second rounder.

  20. Shanny left Robert out there hobbling around on one leg while a healthy Cousins sat on the bench. They could have had that game. I’d never hire that jerk.

John Harbaugh has 0 to do with the 49ers or Fangio.

Fangio was one of John’s assistants at one point. Not exactly 0.

  22. Any Vikings fan that wants Keenum back has viewed the “Miracle in Minneapolis” catch/TD too many times. Keenum just went 6-10 with the Broncos, and they were out of it before the trade deadline. Just to be clear: Case Keenum is and always has been a perennial back-up and he’s about to be on his 5th team of his career, sounds like a back-up to me.

  23. Spare me. Shanahan was railroaded out of town last time. That was after Shanahan did the same to Jake Plummer after a 12 win season. Until his last 4 years, I had a lot of respect for Mike Shanahan. Conversely, I had ZERO respect for Elway until his last 3 years… When he stopped making every decision a “business decision.”

  24. Chatter in Philly is if Foles beats the Saints, Wentz will be on the block. If that happens, Elway gives up the farm to grab Carson…as he should. Under Shanahan, with Wentz rebuild almost complete. Something to watch.

  25. Only reason Vikings would want Case back is to cut him and save the salary cap. Case, thanks for the memories but we want to win championship games – not lob passes for TD picks. If this was serious (and it likely is not), any offer would have to include a first round draft pick to trade up and get a QB. Then Teddy could be the back up. Trevor is not ready to start but Cousins is not ready to win a game where he has the skills to win and just needs to pull his head out of where ever he puts it in key games…

  26. Broncos would be a playoff team with a good QB. They competed hard all season, and played good teams tough. The deficiencies don’t seem to be in the coaching department.

  27. “The one thing that hiring MS will do is bring stability and this mess in Denver is in real need of stability”

    ——-

If there is one thing that Shanahan has shown consistently is that he is willing to hold a grudge. His lack of success without Hall of Fame level talent is secondary as a concern to me when he is being asked to rebuild a winning culture in Denver.

  28. Denver’s situation now is similar to when Shanahan took over the first time. He’s a genius at getting the most out of ANY QB/offense. His deficiency is at building a good defense, which Denver already has in place, minus a #2 corner and a solid linebacker.
