49ers could make a play for OBJ

At a time when 49ers tight end George Kittle is openly flirting with Steelers receiver Antonio Brown, there’s another receiver who could be a more likely trade target for San Francisco.

If the Giants decide to move on from receiver Odell Beckham Jr., the 49ers could pursue him.

The 49ers considered it during that window last year when Beckham seemed to be available, and there’s already buzz this year that, if he’s available, the 49ers would be interested.

As recently explained, Beckham’s contract is very tradeable, with five years and $74 million remaining on the long-term deal signed last August. The Giants would have to absorb a $16 million cap charge (a post-June 1 trade would result in $4 million this year and $12 million in 2020), and they’d have to accept the fact that they will have paid him more than $21 million for 12 games in 2018.

But if the Giants decide it’s time to move on, it makes sense to write it off and avoid paying another $17 million in 2019. Especially if they can maximize their recovery on the trade market.

The potential availability of Antonio Brown could complicate things, giving teams that would be interested in Beckham an option. Although the Steelers would be facing dead money of more than $21 million, the Steelers may decide that the time has come to minimize distractions. Since Brown seems to be the source of many of this distractions, moving on could be the right idea.

Regardless of how it all plays out, 2019 could end up being eventful, with the possible reshuffling of a couple of high-profile offensive players. Given the impact defensive end Khalil Mack had on the Bears, teams looking for a quick turnaround or the missing piece could be intrigued.

  1. Just like AB, OBJ is a great talent, but he is a me first diva playing a team sport. I’ll take undrafted steals that are modest like Diggs and Thielen who play for the team and don’t care about individual stats, don’t air dirty laundry about their contracts, and don’t throw teammates under the bus.

  2. Please don’t even compare the impact of an OBJ or AB trade to the Mack situation. Khalil not only brought world class talent to the Bears but has been pure leadership and class in the locker room, media and the public. The Bears needed a change of culture as much if not more than more talent and Mack has delivered above expectations on both fronts. That won’t be happening with either of those WRs.

  3. I disagree on the last paragraph, I believe the impact of a receiver(even the caliber of AB or OBJ), has little impact, when compared to the difference a transcendent DE can make on a team. And honestly, Khalil Mack is a generational player that has had an impact on an organization that very few players like Reggie White, Deion Sanders and Charles Haley have.

  4. Unlike Brown…Odell can actually produce without a HOF QB throwing him the ball…

  5. Unless you are a wr talent away from the big dance….. id stay away from them both. Imagine though IF the Browns get AB and Bell? Just a thought … Look at the Rams and their spending spree and what it has Bought them Short term.

I dont know, im just rooting for the Browns.

  6. I hate the Patriots guts…but I would take an Edelman over either OBJ or Antonio Brown 100% of the time.

Overrated divas are never worth it.

    ______

When Odell actually doesn’t have a HOF QB passing to him, then we can discuss this.

    You ain’t slick.

  8. There is a problem in NY, or do you really believe that
OBJ sat for a month over a Quad bruise… he was chirping
and they sat him at the very least.

  9. To earlier comment: Young played with Rice and TO. Montana played with Rice and Taylor together, which was also unfair.

  10. Or, in other words, the team with the #2 pick in the draft would potentially give it up for OBJ, so all you other suckers drafting below them should make an offer.

  11. These guys are both wide receiver “head-cases.” Why would any business pay-and-hope these pre-madonna’s work out? The risk is too high and there are other good receivers who want to play….even through an 8 & 8 season.

OBJ has never had a HOF QB throwing him the ball….except maybe in a Pro Bowl here or there. O
ne things for sure, YA Tittle is that last HoF QB the GNats had and he’s lost alot off his fast ball since ’63

  13. Like Antonio Brown -Odell Beckham would be perfect for the Los Angeles Rams and possibly the Dallas Cowboys(playoff teams)

  14. I think the Giants would love it if the Niners took OBJ off their hands. The best thing he does is cause controversies.
Giving OBJ all the money they paid him was the 2nd worst signing this year, right behind the Vikings paying Cousin Kirk Fumbles all the money they paid him.

  15. My niners better not sign that selfish cancerous diva team wrecker. I’ll take rookies wrs through the draft than to bring odel to my niners. I’d rather lose than win with cancer wr’s like odel or brown. They’re just like these players that beat up their wives. Don’t want them. Niners are a classy organization. We don’t put up with selfish divas that put themselves above the team and hold out or be whiny divas that think it’s all about them and only them like bell, brown and odel. It’s all about the team and will always be that way. These idiots can always be replaced with better team players that carry themselves in a classy way and will do anything the coach wants to help the team win.

  16. Makes sense. SF is on the ocean so he could yacht all he wants! lol. The only way to take on this mouth is to give him incentive laid contract options. Perform or don’t get paid.

  17. Nice story…..the NYG were supposedly asking for at least 2 first round picks in these unconfirmed stories from a few months back.

All that means is Mara is open to trade anybody if he gets way more than than what they are actually worth.

In other words nobody will pay that, Mara knows it, and it isn’t happening.

But it makes great headlines…. again.

Clara is building a world class dumpster fire. Jimmy glass to OBJ…that connection would last all of 3 games before one of them went on IR.

Says a fan of the team with the biggest choke in Super Bowl history. Ever.
Can’t believe how the Niners live inside the heads of these Seattle fans — they simply can’t resist commenting on every Niners story.

  19. If my niners sign this disgraceful overrated diva, I’ll be very upset and will hope he gets a career ending injury in week 1. The nfl is better off without these team cancers and quitters. I’d rather we sign terrell owens on my niners any day. He’s never quit on his team. You might see him argue with his coach here and there like tom brady does. No big deal. But you don’t see him be a whiny diva holding grudges and quitting on his team like odel and brown and bell be doing and are known for. Even today terrell owens is a much better wr than these circus clown wrs the media calls elite. Owens on his worst day with a broken leg is better than brown, odel, julio jones, Thomas. T.o can still run a 4.4 40. Still runs crisp routes. Can still burn you deep. With all these circus clown selfish whiny diva wrs in the nfl the media calls “elite”. T.o makes these wr’s look like average 2nd stringers. If t.o came back to the nfl as a starter wr, he’d embarrass these clowns like brown and odel. T.o will get you 10 tds and 1000 yards easy , don’t matter who the qb is. He played with the worst qb in his last year with the bills and got almost 10 tds and 1000 yards. Imagine if he had mahomes or Rodgers or brady or brees throwing to him. He’d get 20 tds 2000 yards. T.o today is still better than every wr in the nfl. It’s not even close. Hopefully my niners sign him this off-season to a one year prove it deal for 2 million. Can’t hurt, it can only improve the niners.

  20. Perfect fit for Richard Sherman’s new team.

Not like they can evaluate, draft and develop young talent. Build the team off of other outcasts…hey!

Clara? I hope you are no older than 15

  24. Why would the Giants get rid of OBJ?
If they get a new QB he will need weapons. You don’t develop a QB with no receivers.
    I’d trade OBJ for 2 #1s.
Is anyone going to give up that much?

    OBJ isn’t going anywhere.
    Neither is AB.

  25. The Giants would have to absorb a $16 million cap charge (a post-June 1 trade would result in $4 million this year and $12 million in 2020), and they’d have to accept the fact that they will have paid him more than $21 million for 12 games in 2018.

    ######################################

Money previously paid has absolutely no impact upon future decisions because that money is spent and GONE. You cannot bet it back and you cannot get it back. It plays no part in decision-making.

  26. Diva wide receivers = deceivers. Has it ever worked out with me-first receivers in the past? Randy Moss got to a Super Bowl with the Patriots, but they unloaded him quickly. Terrell Owens got to a Super Bowl with the Eagles, but he emasculated Donovan McNabb on the way out. There are others of course, but in the end it doesn’t matter.

  27. Love how the Steelers are two days away from missing the playoffs and everyone is selling them off for scrap. I guess it was obvious what a mess they’d become. Maybe the players can help other teams once they’ve been removed from that toxic environment and the obnoxious, unruly fans.

  28. Antonio Brown a head-case? What about the real dumpling-diva Big Ben? There has been drama surrounding the Steelers ever since Roethlisberger was drafted. It existed long before Antonio Brown arrived in Pittsburgh. And the pot was kept a-bubble by Tomlin.

  29. Giants can have Mullens and the 2nd for obj but only if obj WANTS to come to SF. That’s a very important distinction

Steelers dug themselves a grave with the Bell situation and now they’ll be lucky to get what they can from Brown. They can have a 4th for Brown at 31. If they don’t like it then they can sit him every week for the next 3 years for all I care. Either way they’re eating that 21.1 cap hit and getting rid of him. Might as well trade for what you can before you have to cut him.
