MVP: Patrick Mahomes

Getty Images

During the 2017 preseason, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes provided a glimpse of what was to come.

Here’s the play. I remember seeing it at the time, thinking instantly that the rookie from Texas Tech was destined for great things. And it’s precisely why I argued last season, as the Chiefs slumped, that Mahomes should get a chance to work his apparent magic.

The Chiefs resisted. After the season ended with a wild-card playoff loss at home to the Titans, however, the Chiefs made the change, opting to make Mahomes the starter and to trade Alex Smith.

It worked. It worked well. A year later, the Chiefs have the best record in the AFC, and Mahomes is the NFL’s MVP.

Weeks of debate and discussion became a no brainer once the season ended. Fifty touchdown passes. More than 5,000 passing yards. More highlights in one season than most quarterbacks create in an entire career.

Funny body throws. Off balance throws. Sidearm throws. No-look throws. Mahomes is a new breed of quarterback, and a guy who immediately became the best player in the sport. And he’s only 23.

Get used to this outcome. Barring injury, Mahomes will be regarded as one of the best players in football for the next decade or longer. That’s good for football, great for the Chiefs, and bad for whoever will be getting in their way.

Others who deserve consideration include Saints quarterback Drew Brees, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald, and Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott. But Mahomes is the guy, without question.

  1. Only one NFL quarterback broke a major NFL season record for quarterbacks… Drew Brees broke the completion percentage record.

Drew Brees had a season comparable to Aaron Rodgers 2011 League MVP season that many have said is the best ever season by a quarterback.

  2. I agree he deserves it, but not the “I told you so.” You have zero idea what he would have been like as a rookie. Baker Mayfield? Or Josh Rosen? Sometimes sitting a rook behind a pretty good QB teaches the speed of the game. I am very, very impressed with his performance but I am not sure it would have been the same last year. You apparently are sold on your opinion.

  3. I thought it should’ve been Brees, felt like he played at least as well & his team won the big games -LA, Bal, Pitt, 4-1 division record (not counting week 17 as it was meaningless & Brees didn’t play & I believe KC still needed a week 17 win to wrap things up). Plus, PH has all kinds of weapons, Brees just has 2. Either way, this takes NOTHING away from what Mahomes did, he totally deserved to be considered for the award IMO, just think Brees meant a little more to his team

  4. No look pass sealed it for me… Kid can really play. You don’t have to be a Chiefs fan to want to watch him play…

  5. Well earned. 2nd year in the league and he passes for 50 TD’s and 5000 yards. Very impressive. Not a Chiefs fan at all, but excited to see what this kid does in the next few years.

  6. Mahomes record against teams with winning records 3-4, 2 fourth quarter comebacks.

Brees record against teams with winning records 6-1, 7 comeback wins. Oh yeah, it’s about stats….. unless those stats support Brees for all of these years…

  7. While I suppose he needed competition and there needed to be debates. Mahomes played at an entirely different level than anyone else that might be in 2nd place.

  8. Mahomes plays a position that generally takes 3 or 4 years to figure out. Imagine how good he’s going to be when he comes of age. He’s the best player in the NFL right now, and could become the greatest player of all time before he’s finished. Andy Reid knew what he was doing when he traded up for Mahomes.

  9. “immediately became the best player in the sport”

please. he has one good season, lets dial it back

  10. As he should be. Fun to watch and he’s a good kid. Hope Brady passes off the torch and retires after this year. The NFL needs these new superstars.

  11. I feel like my Broncos are in store for years of bad luck with this guy running around and throwing the ball.

  12. I agree, Mahomes is awesome, but why do I not see Christian McCafferty getting any love? He did everything for Carolina this year. The defenses knew he was gonna get the ball, and they still couldn’t stop him.

  13. In case you were wondering…
The last NFL MVP to win a Super Bowl was Kurt Warner in 1999.
The Kansas Coty Chiefs defeated the Steelers in the playoffs at Arrowhead in the ‘93 playoffs behind Joe Montana. That is thier ONLY post-season win in thier stadium, since it opened in 1972. Good luck with all that Kansas City!

  14. This guy had a great season, taking nothing away from Drew Brees who also is great, or Todd Gurley, or Philip Rivers or 5 or 6 other guys that had great years, and Patrick Mahomes produced every week….and amazing season…

  15. First there was Montana, the first truly great modern NFL QB, then came Brady who took it to another level as far as being a win machine, then comes Mahomes who could break every record and set the bar for generations to come. His ceiling is endless. Good times for Chiefs fans.

  16. He’ll never be as good as 2017 Carson Wentz…We’re never letting him go…
    – Philthy Fans

  17. It is NOT the “Best Stats” award.
It is the “Most VALUABLE Player” award!
The Chiefs went to the playoffs last season with Alex Smith and should have gone deeper than they did.
In fact, there’s no guarantee that the Chiefs will do any better this season.
Is Mahomes more valuable to the Chiefs than Alex Smith?
    Isn’t Andy Reid the MVP?
Where would the Saints be without Brees?
You saw it last Sunday… Game over by halftime.
The is no objective, reasonable position to discuss that Mahomes is in any way MORE VALUABLE to the success of his team than Brees

    Well deserved.
Cue all of the pats fans who are enraged that Brady didn’t get the honor this year…
    ————————————————————————————
I don’t know any Pats fan who thinks Brady should be the MVP this year as he been ok not great. In fact, I know some superstitious ones who are convinced they did not beat the Eagles in the Superbowl because Brady was league MVP last year.

  19. I loved watching Brady through the years. But this kid is awesome, something very special. Really now? What right-handed QB completes a pass with his left hand? And the “no look” pass? Never seen that before! But what makes him the MVP is his every down threat ability to deliver the ball accurately whether in the pocket or on the run. He is incredibly fun to watch!

  20. Imagine what Alex Smith is thinking. He may have played his last game and then to see the Chiefs possibly make it to the SB.

  21. mvp=best player…baffling people dont seem to understand this. stop taking “valuable” literally.

  22. Mahomes deserves it. But……..the league coordinators seem to be catching up on this kid, as their last 4 games have shown. We can watch him thru the playoffs and next year to see if he’s the real deal. He is fun to watch, the rest of the league is glad their D sucks.

  23. Brees deserved it more, but no matter, it’s mostly about the media generating a “storyline” and then bringing it to fruition. Brees, the GOAT, or Big —- Nick are better bets to hoist the trophy that counts.

  24. And there it is, the NFL’s version of the kiss of death. And with the 2019 30th pick of the first round, the Kansas City Chiefs select…

Patrick Mahomes is one special quarterback.
A Chiefs-Patriots AFC Championship Game would be awesome!!!
    ——————————————————————————————–

It would be great, but I have my doubts about either team making it to the AFC Title game this year.

  26. The great fans of Kansas City have waited for years fo a great quarterback. It would be special for the long suffering Chief fans to watch their quarterback take them to Atlanta.

With the team winning 7 games, and a complete and total collapse in the second half of the season, that pretty much dashes any MVP votes.

I saw this with bortles, and wentz. I need to see a season or two before I’m sold.
    ———-
What? No you never saw this with Bortles or Wentz. Bortles could play for the next 50 years and you would never see 50 TD’s let alone 5000 yards and Wentz can even play 16 games a years.

  29. There is zero doubt Brees is the actual MVP this year. Unfortunately the… complexion behind all of this unearned Mahommes hype and over praising him takes precedent over actual accomplishments, of which Brees stands at the top and “it isn’t even close.”

  30. Maholmes had more than double the INTs of Brees and almost double the fumbles. He did not have double the touchdowns. Maholmes is partly a system QB. Average Alex Smoth led the NFL in passer rating in 2017 in the Chiefs system and that was before they added a $16 million a year receiver on topmof that for Maholmes. Brees has been denied the MVP befofe because despite his superior stats, some other QB has more wins or a few less INTs. Now Brees has more wins and less INTs and the rules change. Brees has thrown for 5000 yards every other year and never gets MVP, yet somehow now its a big closing argument? Sorry Brees has a running game and defense, but he is the better QB. Maholmes could not beat the Rams either, Brees did.

  31. I have NO problem with saying he’s DEFINITELY earned it over my boy Drew Brees. Plus, Kurt Warner was the last league MVP to win his Super Bowl appearance that same year. The last three MVP winners; Tom Brady, Matt Ryan and Cam Newton, went to the SB and LOST!

This is not true, the Chiefs beat the LA Raiders 10-6 in the 91 Wildcard game at Arrowhead.

  33. I did not know one great year puts you into the HOF.
Lets see how he does once the defence sees more film on him and figures out a way to beat.
He deserves the MVP … no question but I hated it when a rookie QB has a great year and you writers have him in the HOF.

  34. As a second year player, he’s playing at a level only matched by Dan Marino in 1984. Well deserved and he’s human highlight reel. Not a Chiefs fan but I tuned in just to watch him play. He’s that good!

  35. I’m glad you guys didn’t pick Brees for sentimental reason. Nothing against a great player like Brees but I was just sick of the narrative that he never won the MVP award so he should get one this year. Glad cooler heads prevailed. Mahomes is the man!

Incorrect. Chiefs also won a playoff game at Arrowhead in 1991 against the Raiders.

  37. Brees….dome QB who dumped off to RBs 50% more than Mahomes in 2018. Off course Brees is going to have a high completion %.
50 TD /5000 yes outdoors/270 yds rushing/ launched team past AFC elite……Mahomes MVP ….no brainer

  38. Yep, close call but the kid is playing over his head. Where’s the upside? Have we seen his best? I remember a guy named Drew in NE who many thought would win many rings and was a HOF lock. I remember in 2002 many people in NE still wanting him over TB even after SB 36. Chill Winston! Let’s see if he gets past his 1st playoff game.

  39. These aints fans are brain dead, was brees good this year, yes he was, but he wasent even in site of Showtime!! 50 tds 5k yds and all the other stuff in between he did to try and wim, if he had a def, 16-0

  40. The knock on Brees was always that his stats didn’t translate to wins. Best record in the league, now it seems that stats are more important after all.

Anyway I never cared about MVP awards. They mean less to the players than they do to the writers, who see themselves as the Guardians of Greatness.

Mahomes had an incredible year, and while you can make a case for other guys, you can’t really argue that Mahomes doesn’t deserve it.

You do realize this is PFT’s awards, and not the actual ones, correct?
That being said, he’ll most likely win it anyway.

  42. The argument against Brees is that in 2014, 2015, and 2016 he led the league in yards, but it resulted in 7-9 seasons. Brees no doubt had a great season, but his team didn’t start winning again until Kamara was drafted. It’s hard to beat 50 TDs and 5000 yards; Brees was very good just not 50Tds and 5000 yards good.

Mahomes record against teams with winning records 3-4, 2 fourth quarter comebacks.
    ————————–

It certainly wasn’t because of Mahomes. It’s hard to have fourth quarter comebacks when you either have the lead, or are standing on the sideline watching your defense lose the game on the last play.

  45. Everyone saying he shouldn’t get it because they lost their big games.. I mean they lost to NE in foxboro, seattle on the road, not exactly easy places to get wins for any team, but also beat the chargers on the road (albeit not much of a home field advantage for LA) and beat Baltimore.. both AFC playoffs teams.. Even so, you can’t blame Mahomes for the losses when they averages around 30 pts a game. Well deserved, and Brees is a HOF quarterback who had a great year, but when the year Mahomes had is one of 2 in history, i’d say its an easy choice.

should of said some people.. not everyone

  47. I stand corrected. The Chiefs have won TWO playoff games in thier beautiful 46 year old stadium. The Patriots, on the other hand, matched that feat in 2017 alone ( and again in ‘16, ‘14, ‘11, ‘07, ‘03…

  48. “Mahomes is a new breed of quarterback”

I don’t agree with this at all. Hes a rare type of talent and you are not going to see a surge of guys like him anytime soon. Hes unique in a good way, but not a sign of things to come.

  49. Mahomes is MVP. It is true that the Chiefs offense was great with Alex Smith but the defense wasn’t as wretched as it is now. Take Mahomes off the Chiefs and Brees off the Saints and the Chiefs get a lot worse than the Saints do.

Of course if you take Brady off the Patriots and put Hoyer in then the Patriots are competing for the first overall pick in April, and that is fact not opinion. Bradys numbers aren’t enough for MVP this year but I’m ok with that as a Pats fan. That’s because I’d rather Brady get another kind of MVP in a month.

It will be interesting to see how he does starting next year. All it will take is one coach exposing a flaw his game and THEN we will see how good he really is and if he’s not just another Kaepernick, RG3, etc.

    #7 defense

Belichick is 13-6 without Brady as starter since 2008.

    Nice opinion.

  52. The guy lost every show-out game he played this year. New England? Lost. Rams? Lost. Seattle? Lost.

New Orleans in the Super Bowl? He’ll lose that one too.

    Should have been Brees.

  53. Kids exciting and fun to watch and yes coukda went to Brees as well. But slow the row on possible greatest ever bs. It’s one season folks and most teams never faced him before. He had one helluva regular season debut though.

  54. The guy lost every show-out game he played this year. New England? Lost. Rams? Lost. Seattle? Lost.
    =====

    110 QB rating @ NE.. D gave up 43
    117 QB rating @ LA.. D gave up a 50 burger
    103 QB rating @ Seattle.. D gave up 38

Guess he should try playing defense?

Nevermind that those are 2 of the toughest spots to play in all of football..

  55. Mahommes had a great season. He was fun to watch, yes.

But I’ve never seen a QB more accurate than Drew Brees was this season. Never. Coverage didn’t matter, he found the hole.

While the Chiefs looked mortal to me, the Saints looked like and unstoppable force. As far as I’m concerned their record was 14-2, no way would Brees and their #1 team have lost to CAR.

Chiefs lost 2 of their last 3 meaningful games.

Yes, Mahommes had a great season. Playing with several GREAT players. Kelce, Hill, Watkins, Hunt…

Meanwhile, Brees turned his team into a juggernaut. 74.4% and only 5 INTs on 4000 yds passing, people. Unbelievable.

    Brees is the MVP.

  56. Patrick Mahomes will be the MVP and it will not be close. Drew Brees is a great QB and is headed to the HOF, but Mahomes (barring injury) is changing the game. Yes, defenses will try to “figure him out”. The Ravens had him running for his life and on his back ALL DAY on December 9 and he still led the offense to 27 points. It is becoming clear the best defense against Mahomes is to keep him off the field by grinding out long drives.

also on a team with a horrendous defense. If the Chiefs could manage to make their opponent punt one or two more times a game

  57. Mahomes has no bad losses and no bad wins. His team needed him for every win and his defense failed in all the losses.

Brees lost to the Bucs if you want to focus on losses. Brees had bad games and his defense won, and Brees had other bad games but the opponent was awful. Mahomes worst game was where he had 5 turnovers in the Rams game but he also had 6 TD’s and almost 500 yards. Still had a QBR of 110.

Switch teams, and Brees has more losses if he’s playing for KC and the Saints would be undefeated if they’ve have Mahomes.

Mahomes is the MVP, he had a much better season and it’s not even close. Brees is great, but this year Mahomes was better. Hopefully they both get to the SB, with the Saints defense maybe Brees can win the SB MVP. But if Mahomes had the Saints defense, the playoffs would only be a formality.

  58. ringheadcrusher: What might Brees have done with Mahommes’ supporting cast? How many records would he have broken? It boggles the mind to think about it.

    ==============

Brees would have gone 7-9 like he does every time his defense is bad enough to give up 400 points or more. It’s happened 4 times, same 7-9 record every time. Meanwhile Mahomes had a defense give up 400-plus points and he took them to 12 wins and the top seed in his conference.

Brees has never overcome a defense that bad. Mahomes did it his first year as a starter.

  59. Drew Brees not only broke records….he threw to several different receivers…in every game. Mahomes is a great player, no doubt, but his record against teams with winning records is suspect. Drew Brees is the league MVP…in spite of Florio.

Patriots have zero playoff appearances this century without the services of Brady. Fact.

Patriots went from 16-0 to 11-5 and no playoffs without Brady in 08. Fact.

The regression from 16-0 to 11-5 is exactly the same as a team that goes from 11-5 to 6-10. Looks a lot less impressive if you put it that way doesn’t it? 🙂 Fact.

Hoyer is not a very good starting QB as we saw in SF and Cle. Fact.

The Patriots run defense for a stretch of 4 games was statistically the worst run defense in league history, fact.

Patriots would be picking in the top of the draft with Hoyer and not Brady and a defense that has struggled badly at times this year. Fact again 🙂
