Steelers tight end Jesse James compares season to Kardashians

Steelers tight end Jesse James admitted what seemed obvious from the outside — the constant drip of off-field drama took its toll on the team this year.

Via Jacob Klinger of PennLive.com, James alluded to the Le'Veon Bell situation, in which their franchise-tagged running back didn’t report to the team all season, costing them one of their best players and $14.5 million which could have been spent on reinforcements as the beginnings of a bad culture.

Ah man, we are — Kardashians. We have, I mean, we’re something,” James said. “It’s Le’Veon Bell issues, you have more stuff popping up weekly, [ESPN’s] Jeremy Fowler’s reporting stuff about Le’Veon every other week. There’s just people calling people out.

“We were in the front of the ticker on ESPN too much for just reasons that weren’t related to football and not for us playing great ball. It was more distractions.”

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger also cited the D-word earlier this week. Yet strangely, he didn’t mention players calling out other players since that’s kind of his move.

“Obviously there was many things,” James said when asked if he was referring to the quarterback. “I’m not gonna point out individually each one, but there was a lot of things that went on that didn’t need to.”

But for as much as they want to point to the Bell situation in hindsight (and it didn’t help), they started 7-2-1 when that story was fresh.

“Oh, we messed it up bad,” James said of their collapse. “We lost a lot of games we should’ve won. I think there’s changes that’ll be made at some point this offseason. There’s things we got to account for and look at in a hard way.

“And we make adjustments to what we’ve been doing, because had a lot of distractions outside of the locker room this year that we need to handle better going forward.”

Fixing those issues remains Mike Tomlin’s biggest challenge, and this week’s Antonio Brown drama only makes it more important.

  1. I like the Steelers and they have a lot of talent but god they are a hot mess. I was hoping they might fire Tomlin because of it all but I don’t think that will happen anytime soon. Bell is gone brown seems on way out Big Ben u never know could retire or at least say he will. The browns could take this division over. The ravens defense is legit but lamar isn’t going too win big games until he figures out how too throw. Way too skinny and small seems like rg3 all over again. And the bengals we’ll who really likes red heads not really anyone so go Browns go

  2. With so much talent around the Steelers should at least be contenders in the AFC. To me that’s a management mistake (a.k.a. Mike Tomlin). He should try to eliminate distractions and keep the team focused on one single goal, winning the SB.

  3. The problem is the Steelers need a SAFE SPACE at their stadium.
This way when Bell, AB or anyone else have or experience emotional trauma they can quickly escape to a Safe, Non-Threatening area where Coaches and Team Personnel are not permitted to enter. They can smoke weed and throw darts at a picture of Tomlin, Big Ben, Belichick and Brady.
Best part of it all they don’t have to come out until Play Time, just before the Game starts.

I totally disagree. The problem is that they talk about the SB all the time – in preseason, last year in the playoffs before round 1, etc. What they need to do is have a short term focus every day – on that day’s practice, on that day’s game, etc. Tomlin has never figured this out.

  5. Ditch Brown, stop letting Ben bully the OC into calling too many pass plays, and we will be fine. The pieces are in place for a ball control play action passing attack that will help the defense look like a Steelers defense. Time to get back to Steelers football. If Ben bucks, get rid of him too and start Dobbs.

  6. And while Rome (the Steelers) were burning Nero (Tomlin) just sat there and played his fiddle.

You cannot let this happen if you are a coach. He needs to be fried unless they want this to continue to happen. They’ve wasted the last eight years with loads of talent and no Super Bowl appearance. Missing out on the playoffs this year is unbelievable. This tells me you can forget about the Super Bowl and Tomlin will probably retire when Big Ben does because he won’t have a boatload of players to carry his sorry butt anymore. Any half-decent coach would have beaten the Broncos, Raiders and Browns. I’ve been a fan of the Steelers since they drafted Jack Lambert. This is the worst I’ve seen them since those bad Chuck Noll’s last years. It’s not going to get any better. I bet they’ll miss the playoffs next year too because Tomlin will still be the coach.
