NFL officially changes Cody Parkey’s missed field goal to a block

AP

It won’t make Bears fans feel any better . . . or Cody Parkey for that matter. But the NFL officially changed Parkey’s 43-yard, game-winning attempt to a blocked field goal.

No one mentioned Parkey’s kick being blocked until postgame interviews when Eagles defensive lineman Treyvon Hester revealed he tipped the ball. It began a social media debate about whether Hester really touched the ball, with a “Zapruder film” type of frame-by-frame video of the kick.

The NFL, though, has made the change on its Game Statistics & Information System site. In the play by play from the game, it now lists the play as:

4-2-PHI 25 (:10) (Field Goal formation) C.Parkey 43 yard field goal is BLOCKED (T.Hester), Center-P.Scales, Holder-P.O’Donnell.

So it’s official: Hester blocked Parkey’s kick. Now, everyone can debate whether Hester’s tip was the reason Hester missed the kick, but the NFL apparently saw enough that it thinks Hester was the reason for Parkey’s miss.

  1. Good. Give credit where it is due and psycho Bears fans can now stop threatening their kicker’s family.

  2. As the NFL saw it, after Hester tipped it, the ball went back and to the left, BACK AND TO THE LEFT!

  3. Correction:

So it’s official: Hester blocked Parkey’s kick. Now, everyone can debate whether Hester’s tip was the reason (PARKEY’s) missed the kick, but the NFL apparently saw enough that it thinks Hester was the reason for Parkey’s miss.

  4. Sounds ridiculous but this actually changes my entire outlook on the loss. The fact that it’s not 100% on Parkey messing up and hitting the upright AGAIN by himself, it helps me cope a bit better.

It was a good game with two great defenses. Foles showed up when it mattered.

Trubisky was essentially a rookie in this offense and the defense is locked up for at least a few more years. The future is bright.

  5. In other kicker news, the NFL has changed Blair Walsh’s from a “miss” to “Double Choke”.

  6. TBH as far as this Bears fan is concerned they can blow up the whole special teams unit this offseason and start over and that includes the ST coach who brought his bad mojo with him from Cleveland. Special teams hurt the Bears all season long.

so where is the pic of his hand and the ball ?
    ====

Literally all over the internet within 30 minutes of the end of the game.

  8. Lesson to us Cowboys fans….let’s score TDs and not leave it to Maher who’s already letting me know he’s got no stomach for a game winning kick.

  9. I don’t understand why all the social justice warriors feel the need to remind us all that death threats are not okay. The vast majority of people already understand that. I doubt anyone looks at Twitter and decides to delete their death threat tweet after seeing some random person say that’s not cool. These people are not rational to begin with, and they are a very small group of trolls. Stop feeding the trolls.

You keep using that term. I do not think it means what you think it means

  11. $15M contract with $9M GUARANTEED. There are not enough LOLs in the world.

He’s your kicker next year, Bears fans. Get used to it.

  12. Hey, it hurts either way, OK? But if you’re ignorant enough to make threats against Parkey, you need to get a life. IT’S A FRIGGIN’ GAME!

  13. They can change it to whatever they want.
Parked screwed his team when they needed him most.
Maybe the league office can give him a job next season.

  14. Eagles fans should be the very LAST fanbase critcizing ANY fanbase for anything EVER.

If you’ve ever been a visitor to the slum in Philly, you know what I’m talking about

  15. “Now, everyone can debate whether Hester’s tip was the reason Hester missed the kick.”

Debate? We can all agree that a double-doink miss is as close to a make as you can get. So if the Hester’s hand altered it even one inch, then Hester caused the miss.

    The better debates are:
    (1) Did the line allow too much penetration?
(2)Did Parkey kick it too low?

  16. So now are those interior O-linemen going to have to go into hiding with that Bartman/Cubs guy?

  17. Who are these fools that are threatening this guy? I swear they need to locate these nuts and lock them up for year. I bet some of this nonsense will stop. I bet a bunch of them have to pay a bookie or two…

  18. That was a weird kick. I thought it was going to be blocked and then you can tell it slows down a bit, and the speed at which it heading for the net was slowed, thats when it hit the upright. After all that it almost bounced back off the crossbar. Felt back for Parkey he drilled the 1st one and probably wouldve drilled that one too.

  19. So? The guy is still a terrible kicker. That lowlight reel at the end of the game showing all of his missed kicks for the season speaks volumes. In the end, this still falls back on the Bears for keeping him around for so long. Had he made a few much-needed kicks throughout the regular season, they could have entered the playoffs at 13-3 or 14-2.

  20. The announcers for the game I watched along with the rest of America said it looked like it was tipped and then replayed the video. I don’t know why it wasn’t documented as a block until today.

  21. You Bears fans should be asking where Mack was this game? Big time players with big time contracts are supposed to show up and take over big time games. He was a non factor. Blaming the kicker is ridiculous. It should of never came down to a field goal to win or lose.

  22. “Where was Kahlil Mack during that game? He basically disappeared. That was discouraging, to say the least.”

Discouraging to whom? Maybe to Bears fans. The Eagles have been doing a great job of keeping Foles clean.

  23. Everyone who’s played even a little football knows what it’s like to get jammed up by a ball off the finger tips. Now check out the picture of Hester’s hand from the postgame locker room, especially his gnarled and swollen knuckles. It looks like someone who got jammed up from being hit in the finger tips with a football.

  24. Parkey has been awful all year ,yes it was blocked but that means he should have kicked it higher, i blame the the Bears for still having this guy on the team , no surprise that he didnt make it.

  25. Ok now let’s blame it on the invisible 11th man. Or the helmet to helmet on 3rd down incomplete pass. Or terrible 4th quarter punt. Or the D that couldn’t stop the Eagles when it mattered most. Or the ridiculous WR up the middle try for 2 points. Or not recovering a loose football. Take your pick.

  26. Does it really matter, it’s laughable that the Bears defense chocked when it mattered most, why didn’t K. Mack play in the 2nd half ohh wait never mind he did, he just disappeared like in years past. I bet the Bears May be having some buyers remorse right about now.

  27. It won’t make Bears fans feel any better . . . or Cody Parkey for that matter.

I can’t speak for parkey, but I think knowing that my fg attempt was tipped would DEFINITELY make me feel better. It means he is not the only player to blame for the loss.

  28. What do you know, another one of Reggie McKenzie bust picks that can not play, because Reggie does not know how to draft. He blocked the kick that keep the Eagles alive. Denico Autry looks terrible as well starting for the colts…SMH- Also Nieko Thorpe downed the ball on the 1 yard line , playing with Shalon Luani, while Amari Cooper continues to disappoint Cowboy fans, the same Way Bears fans are with Mack…

  29. The Bears gave up 16 points. That’s usually enough defense to still win. Regarding the tipped kick, it doesn’t automatically mean the kick would’ve been good. It may have shanked harder left. There’s really no way to know.

  30. Parkey made 4 out of 5 kicks if you count the one where Pederson called timeout. And the miss got tipped and still almost went in. Ive hated Parkey all year but he is not why my Bears lost this game. How about scoring more than one TD against a crappy secondary featuring Bears castoff Crevon Leblanc?

  31. He didn’t “tip” it”, he “touched” it but that was the difference because that couldn’t have been reproduced in a billion years. Talk about the hand of fate.

  32. I’m sorry, but anyone claiming that Mack ‘disappeared’ in this game either doesn’t know football or only looks at sacks as an indicator of strong play. Mack and Hicks were dominant throughout the game, the Eagles only gained 41yds on 23 rushes (1.8 yds per carry). In addition he racked up 6 tackles as well as an assist. I’m an Eagles fan and I’m very glad we were able to keep him from sacking Foles, but we could not get anything going on the ground all game, and Mack was a major reason for that.

  33. Ray Finkle….still laughing about that one. Tipped or not, Hope the Bears have reached out to Robbie Gould. Parkey was an Average kicker at best all year.

  34. Parkey, if I remember correctly, was let go by Cleveland; his ability to be consistent presents a hazard. But isn’t kicking a problem for all teams this year? The Bears should never have been in a position to lose the game. Mack seemed so overconfident he couldn’t perform; Trubisky was so over-confident he lost his composure. And the betting public was so sure the Bears would win the line was the highest of all wild-card games this year: -6.5.
And just think…the best kicker in the NFL is Matt Stover in Baltimore. And his absurd accuracy couldn’t save the running Ravens. Yes, those Ravens can’t fly anymore.
The Saints bag the Eagles. The Colts pace ahead of the Chiefs. The Rams ram the Cowboys in the butt. And the Pats head off a charge by the Chargers.
    The Saints over the Rams.
    The Pats over Indy.
    Pats over Saints, 34-30

Marvin, I’ve been to both stadiums. Grew up in Philly and lived in Chicago and attended dozens of games in both places from the 70’s to 2017. I’ve witnessed more fights in Chicago than in Philly. I think we can agree crazy people attend games everywhere. So Philly had Mitch (gave up 3 run homer in bottom of 9th) and Chicago has Bartman and now Parkey. Lincoln Financial Field is far from a slum and is 100 times better than Soldier’s Field will ever be. The renovation to Soldier’s Field was a sham. They should have put a dome on it when they had chance. If you sit in the upper level at Soldiers Field, you need mountain climbing gear to get to and from your seat. The best thing about Soldiers Field is the view of the skyline.

  36. I’m an Eagles fan and am glad Parkey got some absolution. As far as Mack, you fair weathered fans are clueless. The Eagles went up against Mack, Donald, and Watt over 3 of the last 4 weeks. Do you know how many sacks those 3 players got against the Eagles and 9 time Pro Bowler Jason Peters??? ZERO. Such petty people unable to give credit where it’s due. I don’t know that Mack is worth what they gave up but I sure do know the Bears aren’t in the playoffs at all without him.

  37. Of course it was blocked.
The best defense in the NFL showed up when it mattered most.
    ALL WE GOT/ALL WE NEED

  38. Don’t blame Parkey. The game turned around when on 3rd down a knucklehead on thr Bear’s defense launched a helmet to helmet hit, drawing a 15 yard penalty and giving the Eagles new life. That led to the Eagle’s touchdown.

  39. It wasn’t a perfect kick but with Hesters help he nudged it just enuf to caused the ball to hit the goal post. Even if Hesters touch caused a 1/16th inch per foot deflection at 30yrds is almost 5+ inches..it’s possible it would have gone through otherwise. So I agree with the NFL’s decision on this one. I would say deflected rather than blocked but either way it didn’t go thru.

  40. .
technically it was a double block.
Hester blocked it, then the bottom of the goal post knocked it back onto the field.
    REJECTED!

  41. They were going to take him out to a fine restaurant to celebrate this news, but Parkey said he’d rather hit the bars instead…

  42. I was kind of rough on Parkey last night. (not idotic like making death threats) More like bitter at his $9 million guarantee to break our hearts. I’ll just pretend to be disappointed that Hester made such a spectacular play, and apoligize for my roughness on Parkey. 2 very good NFL teams played a great game. Definitley taking Eagles and the Points vs N.O. regardless of the last result.

I bet Aaron Donald will have a better performance than Khalil Mack
    ——–
Well, at least in their matchups against philly’s o-line, mack did better. Eagles line made Donald even more irrelevant than mack was in the wildcard game.

He spent much of the game being swallowed up by Future HOF Jason Peters. Didn’t seem like Fangio moved him around as much as in previous games.

  45. steves11 asks if a blocked field goal attempt is still counted as a missed field goal attempt…and the answer is YES!…i see 3 separate places on the Game Summary where it is so indicated…

  46. footballpat says:

And who tipped the other 11 misses?

    ————————————-

    God.

He is a Packers fan. I know this because he put his initial on their helmets.

  47. Only it wasn’t blocked, the ball’s trajectory never changed. Why am I not surprised the NFL reviewed something and got it wrong?
