Broncos hire Vic Fangio as head coach

The Broncos have their new head coach, and the Bears need a new defensive coordinator.

Vic Fangio has been hired as the Broncos’ next head coach, ESPN reports.

Fangio has been the Bears’ defensive coordinator for the last four seasons and was the 49ers’ defensive coordinator for four seasons before that. He’s previously been a defensive coordinator with the Panthers, Colts and Texans. He has a good reputation as a defensive coach.

There was some talk, however, that he might not be a strong candidate for a head coach, as he hasn’t been one before and, at age 60, he could have faced some age discrimination in a league where younger head coaches seem to be all the rage.

Fangio beat out Mike Munchak for the top job in Denver. Now he’ll take over a Broncos team that has had back-to-back disappointing seasons. And the Bears will hope they can find a coordinator who can be as effective in Chicago as Fangio was.

  1. That’s a great hire until it isn’t and in two years they’ll be looking for a new coach

  2. Good for Vic, nothing but the best of luck! Thanks for getting us back on track in Chicago Fangio!

  3. Good luck. as a Vikings fan I hope this slows the Bears Defense down a bit, they look unreal good for years to come.

  4. Certainly knows Defense. Broncos D should climb back up…is Kubiak OC I assume? Somebody has to be able to make the offense back to chicken salad from chicken #@$%.

  5. Tough news as a Bears fan. He strikes me as a Wade Phillips type – great DC but maybe not cut out to be a HC. Can’t fault him for taking the opportunity though and wish him the best of luck. Hope Pace/Nagy have a plan in place to replace him.

  6. Congrats to Coach Fangio!!! Thank you for helping change the culture of the Bears and return the defense to where it needs to be. You are a true professional and wish you the best!!

  7. One of the best D coordinators of all time.

I was seriously wishing the Bears could have kept him but since there are only 32 NFL head coaching jobs he deserves one.

  8. Good for him. Fangio overachieved with John Fox from ’15-’17 with lesser talent. Now it’s an elite unit with talent everywhere.

I don’t expect much of a defensive fall off, if any.

  9. trubiskyisworsethanCutlerandwillalwaysbeinjured....I trolled you so much you changed your display name to mine. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. says:

Hope it was worth it Pace! This is the first step in the full scale decline for the Bears.

  10. The Bears gain an edge and then lose it every few years. At least they won’t have to worry about my Packers anymore.

  11. And Gary Kubiak will join as offensive coordinator and yet another old man who has health issues will join the riggers of the nfl instead of sitting at home with their wife and kids.. Ariens, Urban Meyer, kubiak are all phonies! Either stay retired or don’t act like a phony! stay or go forever phonies

  12. Packer fan happy to see him leave the NFC North. :). He’s done a great job there. Now that the defense has some real talent, it should be tough for several seasons, but he did wonders there.

  13. This is great news! First the Vikings spend 84M on a QB that can’t get to the Post Season. The Bears roll over and flame out into hibernation in round one of the playoffs (Note I actually feel bad for them)…and now the best part of the Team is leaving for the AFC! (I still like Naggy though, he’s cool)
    Happy New Year Packer Fans!

  14. The Bears need to go after Greg Williams because he just got passed over for the head coaching job in Cleveland. His aggressive take no prisoners style of defense would be exciting to watch with the talent Chicago has on that side of the ball.

  15. trubiskyisworsethanCutlerandwillalwaysbeinjured....I trolled you so much you changed your display name to mine. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. says:

But is he a friend of Mcvay? That’s really all that matters!

  16. Denver needs pressure in middle of d line; outside of that the defense has coachable potential everywhere or is already elite. Fangio perfect there.

But Fangio doesn’t pass the ball, or catch it. Not a specialist at id’ing ir developing talent on that side either. If they can talk Kubiak out of rest home to be OC with Fangio running things, then I’d say watch out the Broncos are back.

  17. Great choice by the Broncos, a significant boost for the other NFCN teams, and a big loss for the Bears.

You should proably worry more about your QB that can’t get to the playoffs. (Who is paid a lot more)

  19. Well, I’m sure he’ll do a better job than Vance Joseph. However, is that really saying much? Let’s see how much more he can improve this team’s defense. Furthermore, although Case Keenum isn’t bad, they should think about drafting another quarterback.

  20. Smart move for Elway only if he gets a great offense Cordinator.I would look at Adam Gase to come back They worked together in Chicago and he has worked for the Broncos.

  21. They made a great choice. As a Bears fan, I will miss Fangio dearly, but he deserves this chance more than anybody out there.

  22. Laughing out loud thinking about the Fangio / Elway dynamic. Fangio is not the type to suffer fools, and Elway is always the smartest man in the room, just ask him. Unfortunately I have a feeling this will not end well, and that sucks because Fangio has been passed over for a HC candidate for the last decade and deserves this hire.

  23. No doubt a good coordinator, but after last season, the only team that gave him a sniff were the Packers, and that was for their D coordinator, not HC. This season, the Bears get Khalil Mack, the D goes off the charts and now Vic is suddenly HC material?

  24. A couple people mentioned Gregg Williams replacing him in Chicago. Not a chance. First of all he runs a 4-3 defense. Second of all his huge ego doesn’t fit the culture Nagy has worked so hard to establish. Nagy should give Todd Bowles a call to see if he’s interested in taking over one of the league’s best defenses instead of trying to fix one of the worst, if he’s not officially signed in Tampa Bay yet.

  25. Great hire if Elway doesn’t get to pick his staff. If Elway saddles him with his buddies then Fangio is not going to last very long.

  26. Best of the new coach hires so far. Although, I think he runs a 4-3 Defense if I am not mistaken and the Broncos have been running a 3-4 for years. Interesting to see what happens on that front.

  27. Nice. I was happy with both candidates. I wasn’t happy with Vance Joseph and think they shouldve hired Kyle Shanahan, so i’m a bit more at ease this time around

    =================

He runs a 3-4 defense. That’s why Khalil Mack is an outside linebacker. Get your facts straight!

  29. his press conferences are always golden. i’ll be subscribing to the broncos channel now just for that. he always brings up baseball towards the end of his weekday press conferences and how the sf giants and the cubs both won a world series while he was there. with that said, put some money on the rockies in the near future

  30. Did the league office make a call and put an end to any thoughts of Greg “The Bounty Hunter” Williams being a head coach?

If not … I cannot explain this. Why would the Browns get rid of Williams?

  31. So, Ed Donatell maybe getting a promotion to DC? Or do they go with a new hire? Donatell had some mediocre defenses in GB and ATL when he was DC there.
    =====

14th, 5th, 12th, 11th in Green Bay.. with some pretty average personnel.

That’s a better 4 year run then they’ve had at any point SINCE.

.. Fangio will run the defense anyway.

  32. VJ, too, was a Defensive Coordinator – but THAT did not translate into being a good HC. Will be interesting to see if Fangio can manage an entire team as well as deal with Elway on personnel matters. Denver does have many issues on D coming up. While the pass rush with Chubb and Miller is strong, the interior of the D-line is NOT set. Peko’s contract is up, Wolfe is due to count like $11 million next year against the cap and backups Shelby Harris and Zac Kerr are free agents. Demarcus Walker has been a bust. As for the LB corps, Brandon Marshall is due to make $9 million next year, so he may be out. Finally, the defensive backfield is not set either. Chris harris is coming back from injury, Roby is a FA, Cravens was a bust. Interesting (or dark) times in the Mile High city……

Gase only looked good because he happened to be the OC when Peyton Manning was running the offense.

  34. Fangio’s players absolutely love him. He may or may not end up a great Head Coach, but his shot is long overdue, and he can’t be any worse there than Joseph was.

First round compensation pick for the Bears ???

No – no compensation when a DC leaves for a head coaching job. The Bears can’t stop him from leaving.

…and Steelers Nation breathes a collective sigh of relief!

    ——
Why? Did they give Tomlin the axe?

  37. I’m hoping that Vic is able to attract some top flight assistants to help him out. It’s a solid hire. Really looking forward to see what he’ll be able to do.

  38. only time will tell whether Fangio will make a good head coach or not. He is indeed a good defensive coordinator but he seems to have a problem coordinating the defense to stop game winning drives or to keep a lead. I can remember when Tony Romo led the Cowpies on a comeback and Fangio could not figure out a way to stop him, in Harbaugh’s first year as 49er head coach.

  39. Fangio could not figure a way to stop the Eagles’ winning drive either. Kind of fits the pattern I see when he was the 49er DC. He could not stop Seattle’s winning drive in the NFC CG in 2013 either.

Fangio could not stop the New York Giants’ winning drive in overtime in the 1991 NFC CG either. The pattern is unmistakable.
    =============================================================================
Fangio was the Saints linebackers coach in 1991. They didn’t play the Giants in the playoffs.

You may be talking about 2011. The SF defense originally stopped them and forced a punt, and then the Giants recovered and got the ball back at the SF 24. The were already in field goal range at that point. There is no similarity at all.

  41. Wasn’t Donatell the defensive Coordinator for 4th & 26?????? Yeah it’s been a while since he was a DC, let the Bears promote him… Gb owes him for that horrible defensive call, yep I’m still bitter over that play.#Petty

  42. Not an ideal situation for a new head coach in Denver. Fangio isn’t able to hire all of his assistants- megalomaniac Elway is doing that, and he hired ex-head coach and buddy Kubiak, who may not be the best available coordinator. Kubiak isn’t going to answer to Fangio- he’ll answer to Elway. And Fangio’s joining a team with an unstable ownership situation. If he can overcome these things, it will be very impressive.

  43. Big loss for the Bears. Thet may have the same core players next season, but if the new DC doesnt utilize the talent in the correct manner, they wont be the same defense. Same thing happened to them after Ron Rivera left for the Panthers.

  44. This was a great hire. Instead of going for the shiny supposed offensive mastermind (Kingsbury), the Broncos selected a guy who has been a truly superb defensive coordinator for over a decade. Nice to see substance triumph over hype. Vic is going do very well in Denver.

  45. Congratulations to Coach Fangio, he did great work when he was with the 49ers. Well deserved

They already HAVE a Top 5 Quarterback!!! They need Wide Receivers who can catch like Theilen and Diggs!!!

Hard to believe Vance Joseph got a HC gig before Vic ever did. How on earth did that happen?

Donatell was the best DC Green Bay had until Pettine now.

Donatell got blamed for the 4th and 26 play in the playoffs against Philly after HC Sherman was too chicken poop to go for securing the win on 4th and 1 at the Philly 40 yard line and punted.
