Mike Tomlin reportedly wants to beef up his coaching staff

The Steelers may not be finished losing assistants, but it appears they want to add beyond the number of departing coaches.

According to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin wants to add to his staff, bringing another full-time assistant beyond the staff he carried last year.

It’s unclear what the position would be, but Tomlin clearly needs to work on many things after a tumultuous year.

He already let outside linebackers coach Joey Porter and running backs coach James Saxon go, and offensive line coach Mike Munchak is a finalist for the Broncos head coaching job.

Adding numbers alone won’t solve the problems the Steelers had last year, but the fact Tomlin’s considering structural changes is a sign that he realizes he needs to adapt himself.

  1. Maybe that extra voice will be the one coach who speaks up to say that it’s a terrible idea to go for it on 4th down in your own territory when you have a lead.

  2. Don’t they just need a psychiatrist/psychologist for the drama queens? I am sure every team has its share of problems with personalities, theirs just get more play in the press.

  3. Tomlin, it’s not them; it’s you. Stop with the buddy relationships and the darn cliches, pay attention to the game as it is happening and stop losing games you should easily win.

  4. He needs to hand over all game management responsibilities to someone who simply ‘gets it’. That includes the decisions as to when to and when not to challenge officiating decisions.

  5. Special teams ranked 32 of 32 – start there. Understand that the NFL does not require CB’s to play 10 yards off the ball and establishing the run with the same 4 plays up the middle rarely works anymore. 3 simple things. You gotta start with something.

  6. He can add as many coaches as he wants but it won’t solve the problem. How about controlling “me first” egomaniacs or getting rid of them. Tomlin’s biggest issue is letting his players do, say or act however they want. Doesn’t work in that sport.

  7. It’s not the coaching staff,it’s you Tomlin you are the cause of this dysfunctional, out of control,no discipline team,Get out of Pittsburgh

  8. Adding a new linebacker and another secondary could also help Mike T. Get rid of the Jarvis Jones type guys. There are at least 3-4 guys on defense that should be looking for new jobs.

  9. They could beef up the coaching staff considerably by getting rid of Tomlin. This is nothing more than a desperate attempt by a loser coach to save his hide.

  10. Really what Tomlin needs is a replacement coach vs bad teams.

Against good teams he’s a top 5 coach (damn near beats Pats and Saints in consecutive weeks). They are rarely blown out, even when down big they keep fighting and don’t quit. Even in the 2015 divisional they gave the Broncos a better game then the Pats or Panthers did even with no Bell, Brown and a broken Ben.

Against bad teams he is often trash. If he could get his team playing at an average level vs bad teams he would probably be a top 3 coach.

  11. It’s just a subtle way of making it look like it’s not his fault. Change a couple of position assistants (who actually didn’t do bad jobs) and say you need more help.
“See, it wasn’t me. It was those guys and I was over worked. I recognize changes need to be made. I’m a forward thinker. I can keep up. See, the deck chairs are in different places now. Everything will be fine.”

  12. Tomlin has two main faults. The first is that he believes that he treats all of his players like “men” and he puts the onus on them to resolve any locker room issues and to challenge themselves to play better. This is why there is a lack of discipline and why they have trouble dominating opponents with losing records year after year. Tomlin needs to take control of his players but that is not his coaching style. His second fault is that he just makes some bizarre game decisions. Tomlin challenges plays which would net 3 extra yards or plays which are rarely overturned. Plus his bonehead decision to sit Ben for an extended time in the Raiders game and to fake a punt in the 4th Quarter against the Saints cost the Steelers 2 wins, one of which would have put them in the playoffs with a home game. I know that he will never do it, but Tomlin needs an assistant Head Coach to help him out with some of these things.

  13. Maybe Tomlin should just sign up for some leadership and coaching courses.
    They don’t respect you Mike.

  14. OK let’s see…
A new assistant coach to stop him from challenging ball spots that he’s obviously going to lose. A coach to manage the clock in the last 5 minutes of each half. A coach to handle player discipline. A coach to elbow him in the ribs during press conferences when he’s about to say something stupid and/or give an inappropriate injury report. And a “road game against bad teams” coach.
That should just about fix everything and free up Tomlin to focus on… um.. impassioned locker room speeches?

I’m not a Tomlin hater at all, but this season exposed some issues that belong with the head coach. Even before the Brown stuff leaked out. In-game decisions cost them at least 2 wins.

Why is Danny Smith not fired yet?!?!? Our special teams was an absolute joke!

Between Smith and Butler, was expecting one of them to be gone by now. Instead Saxon wasn’t renewed without any reason. I’ve stopped wondering why.

its super bowl or bust and he knows it

He’s not getting by the Pats anytime soon, so he’s done. Why they keep pretending he can beat the Pats is hilarious.

I know, right. It’s not like the Steelers just beat the Pats a month ago. Totally hilarious.

His team just did beat the Pats

  19. As they say, let’s just keep rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic.

Just what the Steelers need, more coaches to underperform. Sounds to me that they need to hire a sergeant at arms to patrol the locker and meeting rooms. LOL How in the world is Danny Smith still on the staff? Keith Butler should be gone, but I have a very strong suspicion Tomlin was directing the overall scheme of the defense, so if he fires Butler, it would be admitting he (Tomlin) needs to go. What else is the explanation? Then, doesn’t renew the RB coach, who actually was doing a great job with the RBs.

I’m hoping something good is going on behind the scenes, but, at the same time, I’m not holding my breath.

  20. Tomlin has steadfastly refused to acknowledge he needs to change. He has been protected, to date, by the Rooney love of stability over results.

In case you haven’t noticed they beat the pats last month so it can’t be that hilarious.

  22. How about a speech coach? You know, a guy to tell Little Ben and Antonio Clown to keep their big mouths shut.

  23. Any candidate with managing either a nursery school or a day care center on his resumé should have a big leg up on everyone else.

  25. At the last ProFootballFocus ranking of offensive lines, the Steelers were the best in football. Their age suits them.

  26. Another day of Steeler fans crying. C’mon man. I didn’t hear all this bitching when Cowher had down yrs, I wonder why..?!?! No losing seasons, perennial contender. Ask all these other team who fire coaches every other year..
