Vikings announce Kevin Stefanski’s return

The Vikings confirmed that Kevin Stefanski will be returning to the team as their offensive coordinator in 2019.

The announcement came after reports earlier on Wednesday that Stefanski would stay in Minnesota after interviewing for the Browns’ head coaching job. Freddie Kitchens is expected to be officially announced as the new head coach in Cleveland.

“Kevin is a smart young coach with a bright future,” head coach Mike Zimmer said in a statement. “I’m happy to have him take over the offensive coordinator job. His work ethic and teaching ability have been obvious to me behind the scenes since I came here five years ago. He’s well respected by coaches and players both and I know he’s up to the task.”

The 2019 season is the final one on Zimmer’s current contract and he said last week that he’s comfortable coaching out the year without any extension. If that’s how things go on the contract front and Stefanski’s not up to the task, the chances both men are looking for jobs next year could be good.

  1. If they can fix the offensive line, Stefanski will be interviewing for head coaching gigs again. That offense will be scary good with better protection for the QB and better run blocking.

  2. Not a fan of this move. His play calls were worse than DeFelippo’s and there’s a good chance we could have waited and got either Mike McCarthy or Adam Gase when the last head coaching jobs were taken.

  3. You are correct firerogergoodell, McNugget could have most assuredly improved the blocking of the offensive line. He cold have simply taught the Vikings players how to hold and get away with it like the Packers do.

  4. @demo1984..
    LOL. Good one.

But no, the BEST thing he could have done is teach Cousins to draw pass interference flags like Rodgers does by simply looking at the Ref and throwing his hand up any time his receiver does NOT catch the ball.

    *****
He was put into a nearly impossible situation those last three weeks, having to gameplan using his predecessor’s plays. Let’s give Stefanski an entire offseason and training camp to see what he comes up. And it would also be very helpful if Spielman & Zimmer went out and improved that dreadful offensive line via draft and free agency.

  6. Draft or sign 2 blue chip linemen, hire a competent O-line coarh, re-issue Shurmer’s playbook, and plan on a head coach offer in 2020.

  7. Can’t wait to see the game plan for their divisional playoff game this weekend! What you say? They didn’t make the playoffs? How did that happen with that loaded roster and elite coaching staff? I refuse to believe it!

  8. The guy has experience coaching a bunch of different positions and has been under a lot of different HCs and OCs. I would love to see what he can do.

  9. Is this a good move? Did we have any other choices. I didn’t hear about any other interviews for OC.

  10. Crazy.

Press release for a guy who will have the job for about 6-10 weeks of the season, before Zimmer cans yet another OC…

  11. Vikings have tried the big splashes in the off-season, this is more like tiny ripple. Maybe this approach will work better. Something has to get the team over the hump, but nothing will change if they don’t fix the OL…the entire OL.

  12. Good for Kevin, as he can get a few more games experience as a playcaller before he moves on.
Good for the Vikings, as no experienced OC’s are lining up to coach, and get killed by Cousins.

  13. Most of our fan base is totally delusional. You think drafting a couple rookie offensive lineman is going to fix this team?

The coaching staff is garbage. We have no franchise QB. The roster is complete trash when you get past 5 or 6 players. Our GM is a total clueless bufoon.

We stink! Until we face that fact and demand changes, we will see the same unacceptable product on the field.

  14. I love it, he’s been in Minny since 06’ and worked his way up. I can definitely appreciate the loyalty in that, since there is literally zero in the NFL today.
Sometimes the best things are right under your
Nose! Let’s give him an off-season and a skilled Oline coach that grabs a couple OL in FA and another in the draft. SKOL!

  15. Spielman should stilll be in the hot seat. Just imagine if he drafted O-lineman in the first round instead of Cordarelle Patterson and Laquon Treadwell. Sometimes the best player mentality makes no sense when it should be reinforcing your weakest position.

I’m not positive but i believe Treadwell was a perceived “need” pick and not the best player available.

I agree with some of this, as many Vikings fans do no doubt. The reality is, as a team Minnesota was one game away from making the playoffs and one season removed from respectability. True, they’ve played small in big moments, but this simply is not the year for wholesale changes. Not yet. One more season like 2018 and it’ll change. Everyone knows it.

You are delusional if you think McCarthy is taking anything other than another head coaching gig..

  19. This is all coaching. Hire Philbin from GB or even bring back Mike Tice. I’m not joking. Remember when Tice turned the bears turnstiles into a top unit and what he did for the Vikings back in the 90’s as their OL coach. Tice could take the same exact guys the Vikings have right now and turn them into superior pass blockers and road grating mashers on the run. O line absolutely is dependent on coaching and technique. The Vikings neglected that aspect of the team since Zim became HC.

  20. Also Spielman should have been canned after drafting Ponder and his rhetoric about not drafting for need but drafting the best player on the board. Yeah Right. Treadwell is another need pick not the best player. Same with Hughes because Zim talked him into yet another project at CB. The 3rd 1st rnd CB in Zim’s 4 drafts. He did draft Beavers though………………………

  21. This just occurred to me, if the Wilfs like Zimmer, now would be a perfect time for them to extend him since they would have all the leverage. If the Vikings rebound next year Zimmer’s value only goes up. Why not strike while the iron is hot, and extend him 3 years now at an affordable contract of say 2.5 mil? The window is probably open for the next 2 years with the roster they have now, and Zimmer is a known commodity. If the Vikes tank next year and they want to rebuild with a different head coach, then at least they would only be on the hook for 2 years of Zimmer’s new deal at a low rate.

I really like this idea, but read that Tice doesn’t want to coach anymore. I hope he changes his mind.

Yeah. MCCarthy is going to take a coordinator position. That’s silly talk, son.

  24. Another stupid move by Coach Smug! Albert Einstein is broadly credited with exclaiming “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results”.
As far as I am concerned the entire coaching staff needs to go.
