Nick Foles is the best passer in the NFL when pressured

Getty Images

One of the reasons the Eagles keep winning with Nick Foles as their quarterback is that Foles faces down a pass rush better than any quarterback in football.

Foles had a passer rating of 90.6 on plays when he was pressured during the 2018 season, according to Pat Thorman of Pro Football Focus. That was the best in the NFL of the 38 quarterbacks with enough passes under pressure to qualify.

Foles was actually even better under pressure than those stats suggest, however, because Foles also doesn’t take many sacks. A quarterback could boost his own passer rating if he took a sack every time he was pressured, rather than ever throwing the ball away or into coverage. But Foles is excellent at avoiding sacks — much better than Carson Wentz, playing behind the same offensive line. During the regular season Wentz was sacked almost twice as frequently as Foles, and in the first postseason game Foles was sacked just once while throwing 40 passes. And that was against a Bears defense that had sacked opposing quarterbacks about once out of every 12 pass attempts in the regular season.

On Sunday against a good Saints pass rush, the Eagles are going to need Foles to keep playing that way. If Foles can lead the Eagles to a win against a Saints defense that intercepted Wentz three times and sacked him three times in a 48-7 beatdown in the regular season, that will lead to increased talk that the Eagles’ best quarterback is their backup.

  1. Iggles fans can’t wait to say I told you so about Carson Wentz…if Nick Foles loses…

  2. ** foot stomping temper tantrum **

But we don’t want Foles to be the starter…we want Wentz!!!
    – philly fans

  3. I like that Foles tries to get everyone involved in the passing game. He utilizes Jeffrey’s size and Agholor’s speed and is not afraid to chuck it deep. Wentz looked like his one and only read was Ertz.

  4. pretty incredible for sure.
Eagles should keep both guys next year, and maybe further into future. Give Nick a nice 7-9MM, with incentives for more playing time.
It’s not like Nick needs the loot. He’s set, as are his kids and they’re kids if they spend wisely. Plus his family already owns a restaurant chain.

  5. Can’t say a bad thing about Foles. He is a good QB, and even better human being, but the Foles magic stops this weekend. Being on the Eagles also stops, as a QB-needy team will pay him nicely to leave the Paper Champs behind.

Miami and Jacksonville are two very possible landing spots for Foles

  6. Seems unnecessary to throw shade at Wentz here. Also seems like the improved play from the offensive line should be mentioned if you’re going to make the comparison.

  7. I love all of these comments trying to create division with Wentz/Foles talk. As if having two awesome QB’s is a bad thing!

What a time to be an Eagle fan!

  8. Foles one playoff loss was to the Saints.

Eagles don’t have huge holes, need a RB, but can get one in the draft. Keep Foles and Wentz. Nothing wrong with the Elway/Kubiak, Kelly/Reich, Anybody/Strock model.

  9. Foles has shown he should be a starter. But to be fair the oline has played much better as they are healthier. And Dougie has called a much more balanced offensive attack. Wentz was banged up clearly as he was throwing all arm the last several games he played. Not his usual full body throws. And he got blamed for 2 or 3 loses that the defense blew late. Its a great problem to have. I still dont understand how no teams ponied up for Foles after last season. He is a cool calm leader and is far better than most people gave him credit for. Go birds

  10. Been dogging the Eagles, but if they win this weekend I’ll become a believer. This is the game that will define them moving forward,

  11. There is no QB controversy with the Eagles. There will not be any. It’s hard for people to realize these guys are at different points in their careers, they’re good teammates and Wentz is the future.

  12. Nick Foles is too good to hold a clipboard or ride the bench. If he doesn’t start for the Eagles then he deserves to start for some other team!

Everyone brings up his one bad season with the Rams. Aaron Rodgers just had a pretty crappy season himself. Seems only Nick Foles is never allowed to struggle or 2015 gets brought up over and over. It is ridiculous!

Bottom Line: Nick Foles and Carson Wentz are both Top 10 QBs in the NFL. The Eagles unfortunately can’t keep both and the Eagles loss one way or the other, will be another team’s huge gain!

Nick Foles kryptonite is zone defense. He is among the worst QBs in the league when facing it. Hence the Eagles being held to 16 pts against the Bears.
    ———–

Spoken like a Raiders fan who is still bitter about 7 TD’s in a game. 🙂 The Bears had the best defense in the league. If Foles avoided just 1 mistake (the INT while getting hit) and the officials did their jobs, it would have likely been 28 to 15 or even 28 to 12.

    I’ll be specific:

–We would have come away with a FG at worst if Nick didn’t throw the pick. That’s on him, though.

–The call on Bennett was absurd. Yes, it was a penalty, but it was clearly instigated. Should have been offsetting.

–Missed Bears offensive holding EVERYWHERE in the first half.

–The two point conversion was good. All the Eagles players simultaneously thought it was good. It’s just that it was ruled no good on the field, and while the evidence showed it was likely good, it wasn’t irrefutable.

  14. Yeah, as long as he’s playing for the Eagles who know how to play to his strengths and he’s in a system that he fits. As soon as he’s traded, he’s going to be garbage again like he was in St Louis. The Eagles and Foles would both be wise to realize that what they have now is the ideal situation. Wentz starts, but may get hurt often. Foles comes in for relief and backup when necessary and plays well. Playoffs and Super Bowls follow.

Once Foles leaves, it all falls apart.

  15. Been saying it ALL year — Foles is simply better than Wentz. If Wentz did not get hurt last year, the Eagles don’t win it all.

  16. What would it be if he played the whole season.

Fresher legs, not as many hits.

Makes sense that in the short run his stats would be better.

Play 16 games and see what happens.

  17. The evidence of the past two seasons should make the Eagles seriously consider who they want as their starting QB? Foles may very well be better than Wentz, is apparently the superior passer under pressure, takes fewer sacks, and has certainly been more durable. And maybe the improved line play is largely attributable to being more comfortable playing in front of Foles?

  18. My best advice to the non-Philly teams to give them a chance against St. Nick?

Give Nick Foles all day. Do NOT pressure him. In fact, take it easy on him.

  19. chickensalad43 says:

Eagles should trade Wentz to Jacksonville for Jalen Ramsey, Leonard Fournette, and the seventh overall pick.

    —————————————————-

Though I would love for the Birds to have Ramsey and Fournette, no one, especially the Ginger Jesus, deserves being traded to Jacksonville.

  20. This dude Foles throws way more TD’s than INT’s, wins twice as many games as losses and never loses a playoff game. YOU WOULD HAVE TO BE CRAZY TO LET THIS GUY GO!

  21. We hear that old saw about how only the Eagles respect Nick Foles and know how to get the best out of him.

I don’t believe that. What happened in St. Louis was a defensive coach on the hot seat by the name of Jeff Fisher threw Foles under the bus to save his job. Did Foles struggle in St. Louis? Yes but what QB not named Kurt Warner, didn’t look like crap in St. Louis? And, even Warner eventually played terrible and lost his starting job in St. Louis.

You can’t give up on QBs who have shown as much as Nick Foles has. Especially after half a season like Fisher did.

    ——————-

Wentz was probably the best QB in the league when he went down. It’s possible they lose in the playoffs if he was healthy, but I’m not sure how you can say with certainty that they don’t win it all. Maybe that the SB wouldn’t have even been close with Wentz at QB. We’ll never know.

  23. Eagles fans are delusional if they think Foles is gonna beat the Saints this weekend. Saints in a blowout, won’t even be close.

  24. “much better than Carson Wentz, playing behind the same offensive line”

Except that it wasn’t the same offensive line! In the New Orleans game where Wentz threw the 3 picks, the offensive line was in complete disarray. Peters was playing with a torn bicep and was in and out, Lane Johnson was playing with a partially torn MCL, Kelce left the game in the first half and Wisniewski had to play center. It was a mess. Add all that to the fact that the Eagles were playing from behind all game. They were just teeing off on Wentz that day. With all due respect to Nick Foles, he might not have even survived that game!
Nick Foles may very well be the better option moving forward. Tough to argue that anymore. But let’s be fair. The offensive line is the healthiest it’s been all season AND they have Sproles back (who’s their only RB who can pick up a blitz).

  25. Eagles run two different offences with each QB. With Nick they run RPO’s which gives him the chance to get the ball out much quicker. With Carson it’s more traditional with 5 and 7 step drops. It’s like comparing apples to oranges.

So torn biceps heal in a week? Eagles lost with Wentz vs Cowboys then won next week vs rams if your going to make up things don’t embarrass yourself Peters has been on the injury report in the last month more than he was at any point this season with Wentz lane Johnson was healthier in the beginning of the year and Kelce has been banged up the last month

  28. To be fair, this statement is just not true: “But Foles is excellent at avoiding sacks — much better than Carson Wentz, playing behind the same offensive line.”

The Eagles oline is healthier and playing far better now than in mid-season. In fact, the oline — not Nick Foles — is the single biggest reason their offense has improved.

  29. Let’s debunk some dumb biased takes. Eagles had sproles with Wentz this year and they were losing the same exact oline now is the same exact oline with Wentz eagles are 6-7 with Wentz

Eagles defense gave up 53 points combined in the 2 games with foles vs rams and Texans worse than any point with Wentz this year

    —————-

This is incorrect. They gave up more points during both 2-game stretches surrounding their Saints blowout, and Wentz was still playing then.

  31. Eagles Could barely beat a 500 team with wentz so we know for certain he would not have won a single playoff game last year

  32. Funny. For years Philly lamented that they didn’t have a QB who could deliver a ring. Then they find a guy who’s one talent is winning playoff games and they’re like yeah, I mean you’re pretty and all but…

Wentz will never get to a Super Bowl it’s not about talent many qb have more talent than tom Brady it’s the intangibles that set him apart
    ———
From all your posts that not only do you know nothing about Wentz, you know nothing about the Eagles. Wentz did not play with Sproles this season. Wentz does have all the intangibles. The o=line is not the same exact o=line and it is healthier than at any point this year. If you’re going to make stuff up, I suggest you post on Fox News website. Clueless hater…jealousy is a good look for you.

  34. I’m thinking the Eagles need to start a new annual tradition: putting Wentz on IR a few weeks before the end of the season. Each guy seems to have found his specialty.

  35. There has to be some threshold of games played before such a claim can be made. The numbers are impressive but difficult to quantify (small sample size), and compare to other qbs that have a. Played 16 regular season games, b. Have enough snaps on tape for teams to study tendencies.

  36. He throws that balloon ball down the field past the coverage and it drops straight down where only the receiver can get it. Then there are the high point balls for Jeffery. Then the quick outs off run option plays. I’d ignore the run part of the run option. He isn’t going to kill you that way and if he runs, punish him.

Honestly, after making a million plus dollars last week and all the trade talk from the organization, I think it’s the Kiss of Death. Someone has to go back and play defense the way that made Noles a backup in the league. He didn’t morph into a great QB. They have just been playing to his strengths which is a natural reaction when your starter goes down. At some point this balloon gets popped, and it may be this weekend. Maybe not, because when a team believes unseen forces are guiding them, amazing things can happen. It’s been a nice ride for him and he seems like a nice guy. He’ll have a chance to be a starter next year and make a boatload of cash, so good for him.

While Wentz is a good QB, no doubt, so is Foles. Foles went to the Pro Bowl when he was the Philly starter. Now, with Wentz injured, it’s starting to look like he’s a bit brittle
Wentz’s game involves more running, subjecting him to more hits.
    I’d Pick Foles over Wentz.

  38. When Nick Foles has 3 rings before he’s 30 then I’ll get excited about how good he is. Remember when Wentz was going to be the next TB12, or Montana if you like him as a second best.

I was never high on Wentz. He’s a good QB, no doubt, but he has a very long way to go before he is in the GOAT discussions, if ever.
Wentz is second best to Foles, not the rest of the league.

Never said anything disparaging against Foles. He’s a legend here and we love him. Wentz barely ran at all this year because of his knee and brace. Can’t make a determination on Wentz yet because he spent all summer rehabbing. I really believe with a healthy summer he’ll be closer to the Wentz of 2017 than 2018. He’s had a 12 week injury and a minimum 9-12 month injury yet has only missed 10 or so games to date because of the timing of the injuries. Anyone who has watched Wentz play every game of his career knows that even this season, he got better every week right up until the NO game. You haters, not you in particular but people that come to every Eagles article to trash him-like redandgoldhitman, just have an axe to grind. If he’s injured again next year then you can call him injury prone. People said the same thing about Joel Embiid…

  43. Redandgold52. Please. People defending Wentz are valid. So are people supporting Nick. Each has their own strength. Delusional would be spewing nonsense regarding Wentz and his fans. Carson won 10 games before getting hurt. He was likely the league MVP before the Birds went on a great run. If you and the other blind Foles loyalist watched the entire season you would know Carson was not completely healthy when he came back. In addition, losing both Ajayi and Sproles meant no RB could pick up blocks. The Oline was banged up. The D was banged up, missing tackles and blowing games. Doug was not calling balanced games. It’s not complicated, Football is a Team game. Things are coming together and Nick is doing and outstanding job being a point guard and keeping his poise. The D is healthier, the O is healthier, the play calling is better. But if you ask 99 execs, they’re all taking Wentz. I guess you know better than everyone .

Nick Foles is being pressured more than wentz so as a Fact the oline has been worse the difference is avoiding the pressure and getting the ball out quicker the oline was more healthy with wentz jason Kelce wasn’t dealing with a knee contusion and sore elbows injuries that he recently gotten peters has been limited and missing practices every week the last month but good job embarrassing yourself if your going to lie don’t make it obvious .
