Linebacker Khalil Mack‘s first season with the Bears resulted in selection to the Pro Bowl, but he won’t be playing in the game when it kicks off in Orlando a week ahead of the Super Bowl.

The Giants announced on Thursday that Olivier Vernon will be taking Mack’s place on the roster because Mack has pulled out due to injury. Mack missed two regular season games with an ankle injury, but wasn’t on the injury report as the year wound down.

Vernon also missed time with an ankle injury this season, but his seven sacks in 11 games were deemed worthy of selection to the game for the first time. He added 30 tackles and a forced fumble in his third season with the Giants. He’s signed for two more years with cap hits of $19.5 million each year.

The Giants will also be represented at the Pro Bowl by kicker Aldrick Rosas and running back Saquon Barkley. Safety Landon Collins was also selected, but will miss the game after having shoulder surgery.

  1. barr and vernon? this is gettting comical. they COMBINED for 10 sacks.

good job probowl… i hope your proud of yourself… Kyler Fackrell didn’t exactly set the world on fire but he did have 10.5 himself…

  2. This is absolutely ridiculous. Dallas LB Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch both are better than Vernon. DRAMATICALLY better…

    Vernon has 7 sacks, 23 tackles, 1PD
Jaylon has 4 sacks, 82 Tackles, 4 PD and a TD
LVE has 102 Tackles, 7 PD, 2 INT and he barely played the beginning of the season
Hell, Sean Lee has 30 Tackles and half a sack he played in only 5 games.

Who was drinking when they picked Olivier Vernon?

  3. Wow. Terrible pick as a Pro Bowler. Who does this guy have dirt on?

scottyhill68 is right. Dallas has two linebackers that were snubbed and both are regarded as near the very top of the league, yet they can’t even get a replacement nod? At least they’re STILL PLAYING in January. If things go right, they’d be ineligible for the Pro Bowl any way.

A joke. Guy was only even noticeable in three games all year and one of those was due to a slew of bonehead penalties.

Apparently you didn’t watch a lot of games or have a very small TV. If he wasn’t causing double teams and freeing others up, he had 69 QB pressures and he forced 6 fumbles. He was the reason that Floyd and Hicks became more effective, and why the Bears moved from the 9th best defense to first. Also one of the better edge rushers at stopping the run. Some people don’t understand the value of a good pass rusher, It’s less about sacks and more about the disruption that they cause, and Mack is one of the best at it.

Barr rarely rushes the passer. He plays OLB the old fashioned way in the 4-3 defense ala Ted Hendricks, Jack Ham, and Matt Blair.

    Please. I watch every game.
We call him Olivier “Almost Home” Vernon for a reason.

Sorry. Thought you were talking about Mack. My mistake.

  7. When is the NFL just going to get rid of the Pro Bowl? The mini games are fun but honestly who cares about the actual game.

  8. This just shows how watered down the pro bowl is. I don’t care how much of a homer one can be for their team. There is no way Vernon is one of the top players in the league.

Barr isn’t a 3-4 rushing linebacker. Although he would be good at it.
