Ron Zook out as Packers remake staff

When they fire the longtime head coach and then talk about how complacency has set in, there’s no surprise when there are staff changes.

According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.com, the Packers aren’t retaining special teams coordinator Ron Zook.

The 64-year-old Zook has been with the Packers since 2014.

A former head coach at the University of Florida and Illinois, Zook came up through the ranks coaching defensive backs and special teams. He had previous stints with the Steelers, Chiefs, and Saints.

New coach Matt LaFleur was reportedly interested in keeping defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, but has opened the door for other existing assistants, including interim coach Joe Philbin.

  1. There’s no way to retain Zook and your credibility.

I’m ok with Pettine but DB and LB coaches can go. Campen and the TE coach can stay. Rest, there has to be innovative talent available elsewhere

  2. This needed to happen. Zook’s schemes were solid enough to generate several long returns but far too many of them were negated by penalty. The entire team was far too undisciplined, and especially so on Special Teams.

Trivia: The cute redhead that was in the Wendy’s commercials for a while is Zook’s daughter.

  3. One name LaFleur is looking at for special teams is Brayden Coombs. Well regarded special teams assistant.

  4. IMO they got a lot more then just him to get rid of. Philbin is right to move on to the Vikings. This team is really a dumpster fire. Way over rated due to Rodgers presence but reality if you follow them, they have an avg at best defense and only an above avg offense with Rodgers healthy.
I looked at their schedule for next year and wow, they will have a time just winning 4 games, 6 tops unless they shed the deadwood and have a great draft.

Packer becomes exPacker. Cheese eaters trash him. Right on cue.

Some Packers fans have been calling for Zook to be let go even before the Debacle against the Seahawks in the playoffs a few years ago. If you’re going to criticize us for being consistent, have at it, I guess.

  6. Ron Zook was cleaning out his office and carrying personal items to his car. He was penalized for parking illegally, and then fumbled his stuff into the street. When an intern came to help him, he accidentally pushed them from behind and then as they were falling, he grabbed their arm and held for an inordinate amount of time.

There go the Packer Fans again lying like Trump. The cute redhead is Morgan Smith Goodwin and not Ron Zooks daughter. Geesh.

Joe Philbin still has a job? Lol

Maybe a new one. The Vikings have asked and been given permission to interview him.

Joe Whitt has had solid players over the years. Tramon, Sam Shields, Hayward, Hyde.. I’d like to see him stay, personally.

Moss is already gone.. OLB was a bright spot this year, I’d say, with Fackrell coming on, and Eliott playing well most of the year… rumor there is though that Chris Shula (Rams) will be one of LaFleurs top aides, so Graham is probably out also.

I’m indifferent on Campen at this point. He’s had some decent units. But WAY too many sacks for my tastes. And the run game has been notoriously weak over the years. I’d just as soon LaFleur get his own guy.

.. I believe its already confirmed the TE coach will be back?

………and after the intern backed away safely to the sidewalk, he went back and pushed him into the bushes.

Nah, coaching wasn’t a problem on the Packers. It’s all on Rodgers.

She may not be a red head but she’s done Wendy’s commercials. Along with a lot of TV.

    Feel free to google….

    ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Jacqueline Zook definitely made a Wendy’s commercial. That’s a pretty weak thing to pick a fight over. You must be a Viking fan.

  13. It appears he wasn’t much of a STC or a HC in college; Florida and Illinois. I remember when he was the Saints DC when the Rams had “The Greatest Show on Turf.” He used to design some schemes to get after Kurt Warner. After that first year, we’d usually split with them and/or Warner would take a beating. I’m surprised no one ever tapped him again to be a DC again, in the NFL.

  14. As Special Teams coaches go, Shawn Slocum graded out as an F- whereas Ron Zook was only an F. Like McCarthy stubbornly sticking with Dom Capers, Zook should have been gone long ago.

  15. When Aaron Rogers plays every single game and you win 6 of them, why would you keep anybody at all? 6 wins. Now really is the time to go with a scorched earth policy and start over.

I appear to have been mistaken about the Wendy’s commercials, which is a FAR cry from lying… and a distinction you really should learn to make (although I’m quite sure you wouldn’t say that in person to someone you don’t know). Ron Zook’s daughter is Jacqueline Zook, an actress and writer who’s been in movies and television since 2006.

If I remember correctly, I heard the part about the Wendy’s commercials on a local news channel when Zook was hired. So, Zook’s daughter is a cute actress that’s not the redhead from Wendy’s commercials.

    Feel free to Google.

  17. Jim Campen is one of the better O Line coaches in the NFL. I’d be surprised if Lefleur let him out the door. He and his family have been in GB since 2004. They love it here. And he’s a real decent guy to boot.
The issue he has had to deal with the last 2 years is lack of quality back ups. Especially on the right side of the line. You can only work with what the GM gives you and in Jims case it wasn’t enough. Just like back up QB’s last year. Rodgers goes down and Hundley was a disaster.

    Spot on.

  19. I think it’s a great idea to identify and retain all strong components, including active players and worthwhile coaches, and fix only what’s wrong. It’s this kind of out-of-the-traditional-box thinking that will put the Packers back on top where they belong. It works because they have Rodgers.
