Report: Jets in talks to make Gregg Williams defensive coordinator

The Jets hired one deposed 2018 head coach to run their team and they’re reportedly close to adding another one to Adam Gase’s coaching staff.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that the team is in talks to hire Gregg Williams as their defensive coordinator. Williams was the interim head coach for the Browns to close out the 2018 season and the team went 5-3 after he was named as Hue Jackson’s temporary replacement.

Williams has run defenses around the league for most of the last two decades and also had three years of head coaching experience with the Bills from 2001 to 2003.

Assuming the talks don’t break down, he’ll be charged with improving the Jets’ defense after the team finished 29th in points allowed and 25th in yards allowed in 2018.

  1. The Jets need a major jolt of discipline and Williams will provide some of that. And say what you will about Williams, he’s always got a job and seems to get guys to play for him.

  2. While he seems like a jerk, he’s also talented and should be a huge upgrade over Todd Bowles/Kacy Rodgers.

I can see the Jets defense improving quite a lot.

  3. With Gase and him they will make the Jets a better team. As long as Gase brings in a solid OC.
Miami needs to hire a HC so they can get some coordinators wrapped up also.

  4. Too bad Cleveland didn’t make him the HC; I think he earned it. But Mayfield showed serious improvement under Kitchens and you don’t want to stunt what appears to be your future franchise QB by having him learn a new offense in only his second year.

After he coached the Browns to 21st in points allowed and 30th in yards allowed in 2018?

What? BB hates this guy as do most franchies he spends his 1 year with. He’s horrible.

He’s immature and arrogant. BB will love to demolish him even more.

  7. Only the Browns would let a guy go who turned their team around like Williams did. The clown show in Cleveland continues. No big fan of Williams, but he sure did a great job turning around the awful Jackson Browns.

  8. So he just led a team to a better late-season finish than either Bowles or Gase, but they don’t make him HC. Interesting.

Almost all the coaching hires so far seem to either be baby faces with no experience or rejected table scraps. 2019 looks to be a bloodbath. Odd to see the one guy who just had probably the most remarkable HC success this season get bounced around like this.

  9. If Gase would have hired a proven and winning defensive coordinator like this while he was in Miami he’d still be there.

  10. If I’m the Jets, as much as I despise Bounty Gate….if Gase fizzles out, don’t let this guy leave.

If they keep the ST coach and hire Williams they’ll actually, dare I say it, have decent coaches in all three phases. Who woulda thunk it?

  11. Cleveland fan here. Sorry to see Greggg go. Jets fans and players will love him. He brought much needed leadership and stability after Hue was fired.

On that note, check out the way GW left compared to Hue. Gregg issues a statement, thanks the fans, avoids the media and gets another job. Hue issues no statement, thanks nobody, and immediately goes on hot taek shows to throw everyone else under the bus. I bet Baker bro hugs Williams when the Browns and Jets play in week 1 next year. That will be a prime time game.

  12. I’m starting to think Stephen Ross doesn’t pay top dollar for assistant coaches/scouts/execs which severely hampered Adam Gase in Miami. Think about it, why does Peyton keep pushing this guy? Romo, Cowher, John Fox, and a lot of former players also praise him constantly. Saban, Parcells, Jimmy Johnson, Jeff Ireland, and Rick Spielman had no chance in Miami either. If Gase keeps Brant Boyer as well Miami might regret this for years.

You make it seem like being hated by”BB” is a bad thing.

  14. As a Bills fan, I don’t like this, Gregg Williams usually coaches good defenses, just like his time here in Buffalo, and they are tough, maybe a bit too tough, watch out Josh Allen.

  15. Who told the Jets that they could hire good coaches?

Gase and Williams would be a powerful combination.

  16. And the Jets Troll again appears to tell us about the “great” Belicheat and how he will react! I swear I always laugh every time at his “great” insights.

  17. I think this is the biggest impact hire so far. The Jets should add another superstar or 2 to their defense in the draft, and a great defense is a young QB’s best friend. Right now I’d say the Jets go into next year as the top team in their division
